Non-secreting pheochromocytomas are rare adrenal tumours. We report the case of a clinically and biochemically silent giant pheochromocytoma that presented as bilateral pulmonary embolisms. Successful surgical resection was performed. Multiple endocrine neoplasia 2 syndrome and neurofibromatosis type 1 were clinically excluded. Subsequent DNA analysis of the succinate dehydrogenase complex subunits B and D (SDHB and SDHD), and Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) genes revealed no mutations.

Histochemical tests for dehydrogenases in isolated rat myocardia have shown the level of granular diformazan to correlate with the presence of fat drops in cardiomyocytes. Using a semiquantitative method they developed for assessing myocardial status from histochemical tests for dehydrogenases (glutamate, isocitrate, lactate, succinate, beta-hydroxybutyrate NADH, or NADPH dehydrogenases), the authors found that demonstration of granular diformazan in such tests is not associated with alterations in the state of particular dehydrogenases but is indicative of fatty dystrophy.

On a model of an infectious process caused by intraperitoneal injection of S. paratyphi B to mice there were elaborated diagnosis of paratyphoid infection and premorbid prognosis of the disease by cytochemical indices. For the diagnosis of the infectious process the most informative of the cytochemical signs under study proved to be changes in the activity of succinic and alpha-glucerophosphoric dehydrogenases in the lymphocytes and particularly in neutrophils. The escalating antibiotic resistance crisis requires innovative strategies to revitalize existing antibiotics. Here, we report that xylose, a food-grade sugar poorly metabolized by humans but readily utilized by bacteria, acts as a potent metabolic adjuvant to restore gentamicin efficacy against bacteria. Bladder paragangliomas (bPGLs) are extremely rare tumors, and we present a unique case of metastatic bPGL that developed within three months. Frequently, these tumors are related to a hereditary syndrome due to germline mutations in succinate dehydrogenase B (SDHB). A unique challenge in this case was related to social determinants of health, which, in this patient, were associated with difficulty maintaining appointments. In treating a patient with hematuria, it is important to consider paraganglioma (PGL) as a differential diagnosis to optimize treatment.

1. 1H-NMR spectra of liver, spleen and kidney extracts from Meriones unguiculatus infected with Echinococcus multilocularis showed decreased levels of glucose. In addition, the liver extracts were severely glycogen-depleted. 2. Both livers and spleens contained less glycine, taurine and acetate. Pseudomonas aeruginosa grows readily on synthetic media containing succinate (36 mM) and ammonium chloride as sole source of nitrogen (34 mM) ; addition of tyrosine or phenylalanine (2,7 mM) is followed by an increase of both the growth rate and pyocyanine production. Several molecules structurally related to tyrosine give similar results. Tyrosine partially suppresses the inhibitory effect of both cyanide and azide. The results are discussed with regard to the biosynthesis of aromatic aminoacids and of phenazine pigments.

The alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase complex and its component enzymes, lactate dehydrogenase, pyruvate carboxylase, cytochrome c oxidase, succinate-cytochrome c reductase, NADH-cytochrome c reductase, and the concentration of cytochromes and enzymes of beta-oxidation in muscle from a patient with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes were studied and no specific defect was found. In an 8-year-old boy, the Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) was associated with protracted intrahepatic cholestasis and ultimately fatal respiratory disease. No precipitating factors of SJS were identified, but a Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection was suspected. The appearance of jaundice on the seventh day of illness was preceded by the prescription of erythromycin ethyl succinate, but intrahepatic cholestasis has never before been associated with this derivative of erythromycin. It is suggested that there may exist a subtype of SIS with severe hepato-pulmonary pathology.

The authors used incubated adrenal mitochondria to study the in vitro effect of suramin, an antiparasitic drug, on the transformation of corticosterone and 18-hydroxycorticosterone into aldosterone. We present a case of a 40-year old woman diagnosed with a four-place spontaneous paraganglioma-pheochromocytoma syndrome, which was treated surgically. The presence of the succinate dehydrogenase complex subunit D (SDHD) mutation that causes the pheochromocytoma was confirmed but no mutations in the family members were found. After the excision of the paragangliomas located in the areas of the division of carotid arteries, and mediastinum, as well as a tumor on the left site of the celiac trunk, the patient remains asymptomatic and is regularly followed-up.

We report a new case of MERRF (myoclonus epilepsy with ragged red fibers) syndrome with basal nuclei calcification on the brain CT scan, without hormonal abnormalities, with high CSF protein and hyperlactacidemia, juvenile onset and death at 18 years. Biochemical study of mitochondrial muscle enzymes showed decreased NADH-cytochrome-C-reductase and Succinate-cytochrome C-reductase activity, suggesting a Complex III defect of the respiratory chain. Similar reported cases are reviewed.
