Development of the sympatho-vagal balance in the cardiovascular system in zebrafish (Danio rerio) characterized by power spectrum and classical signal analysis.

The development of sympatho-vagal control of cardiac activity was analyzed in zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae from 2 to 15 days post fertilization (d.p.f.) by pharmacological studies as well as by assessing short term heart rate variability. Changes in heart rate in response to cholinergic and adrenergic receptor stimulation or inhibition were investigated using in situ preparations and digital video-microscopic techniques. The data revealed that the heart responded to adrenergic stimulation starting at 4 d.p.f. and to cholinergic stimulation starting at 5 d.p.f. Atropine application resulted i

Agmatine suppresses peripheral sympathetic tone by inhibiting N-type Ca(2+) channel activity via imidazoline I2 receptor activation.

Agmatine, a putative endogenous ligand of imidazoline receptors, suppresses cardiovascular function by inhibiting peripheral sympathetic tone. However, the molecular identity of imidazoline receptor subtypes and its cellular mechanism underlying the agmatine-induced sympathetic suppression remains unknown. Meanwhile, N-type Ca(2+) channels are important for the regulation of NA release in the peripheral sympathetic nervous system. Therefore, it is possible that agmatine suppresses NA release in peripheral sympathetic nerve terminals by inhibiting Ca(2+) influx through N-type Ca(2+) channels. W…

Augmented sympathetic neural response to simulated obstructive apnoea in human heart failure.

Sleep apnoea in heart failure increases mortality risk, possibly as a result of greater activation of the sympathetic nervous system. In healthy subjects, simulated central apnoeas (holding breath) and obstructive apnoeas (Mueller manoeuvres) increase muscle sympathetic activity equally, primarily through chemoreceptor stimulation. In heart failure, however, Mueller manoeuvres cause greater reductions in blood pressure than breath holds. We hypothesized that in heart failure, the summation of arterial baroreceptor unloading and chemoreceptor stimulation would increase sympathetic activity more…

Cutaneous ganglioneuroma: A case report and discussion of the literature.

Ganglioneuromas (GNs) are benign tumors composed of ganglion cells in a Schwannian stroma. They are derived from neural crest cells that give rise to the sympathetic nervous system. Hence, GNs can be found anywhere a sympathetic ganglion is present. Most commonly, GNs are found in the posterior mediastinum and abdominal cavity. Within the abdominal cavity, they are most likely to be found in the retroperitoneal space or adrenal glands. Cutaneous involvement is uncommon and rarely reported in literature. We report an interesting case of a cutaneous ganglioneuroma on the abdomen of an 83-year-ol…

Therapeutic potential of stellate ganglion block in orofacial pain: a mini review.

Orofacial pain is a common complaint of patients that causes distress and compromises the quality of life. It has many etiologies including trauma, interventional procedures, nerve injury, varicella-zoster (shingles), tumor, and vascular and idiopathic factors. It has been demonstrated that the sympathetic nervous system is usually involved in various orofacial pain disorders such as postherpetic neuralgia, complex regional pain syndromes, and atypical facial pain. The stellate sympathetic ganglion innervates the head, neck, and upper extremity. In this review article, the effect of stellate g…

[Erectile dysfunction--value of neurophysiologic diagnostic procedures].

Neurogenic, particularly autonomic disorders, frequently contribute to the etiology and pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction. Parasympathetic and sympathetic outflow mediates erection. Noncholinergic, nonadrenergic neurotransmitters induce activation of cyclic monophosphates, leading to relaxation of smooth muscles of the corpora cavernosa and by this to tumescence and rigidity, i.e. erection. The diagnosis of neurologic causes of erectile dysfunction requires a detailed history and neurologic examination. Conventional neurophysiological procedures evaluate the function of rapidly conductin

[Normal and abnormal response of the arterial pressure to standing (author's transl)].

Redistribution of blood volume during orthostatism is followed by a reduction in venous return and therefore cardiac output. A drop in the blood pressure following postural changes is normally prevented by the action of the baroreceptor reflex, which leads to an increase in total peripheral resistance and heart rate. Orthostatic hypotension may arise from a variety of causes. In some cases, the disorder of postural regulation is due to an autonomic nervous system disease, and various tests are available that enable the diagnosis to be confirmed and the mechanism of action to be elucidated. Controllable and uncontrollable stress in humans: alterations in mood and neuroendocrine and psychophysiological function.

The authors exposed 10 healthy human volunteers to the stress of loud (100 dB) noise under controllable and uncontrollable conditions on two separate days. Subjects reported higher self-ratings of helplessness, lack of control, tension, stress, unhappiness, anxiety, and depression; had greater hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function as measured by elevations in plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone; and had higher levels of sympathetic nervous system and electrodermal activity after the uncontrollable stress condition than after exposure to controllable stress. Thus, lack of control over eve…

Autonomic cardiovascular mechanisms linked to stress in dental practice.

Background Abundant evidence from human and animal studies indicates that the sympathetic response during mental stress preferentially involves the heart. Acute or chronic stress can lead to cardiovascular disease, including hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias. Stressors in dental practice are numerous, including drill noise, sight of a needle and pain. Numerous studies indicate that many adults suffer from dental fear or dental anxiety, and many develop dental phobia. Fear, anxiety or phobia are associated with increases in heart rate, changes in systolic blood pressure, and decreased oxygen

Autonomic Nervous System: A Therapeutic Target for Cardiac End-Organ Damage in Hypertension.

More than 1.5 billion people worldwide have arterial hypertension. Hypertension increases the risks of death and cardiovascular disease, such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure. The autonomic nervous system plays an essential role in hypertension development and disease progression. While lifestyle factors, such as obesity and obstructive sleep apnea, predispose to hypertension by increasing sympathetic activity, hypertension itself maintains the autonomic nervous imbalance, providing the substrate for atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Therefore, autonomic nervous system modulation

Sympathetic dysregulation in heart failure: mechanisms and therapy.

Heart failure is accompanied by sympathetic over-activity, which contributes to the pathophysiology and to poor prognosis. This paper reviews the mechanisms and potential therapy for sympathetic dysregulation in heart failure (HF). Several points are emphasized: (1) There is increased sympathetic activity to skeletal muscle, kidney, and heart, but not to skin, in HF. This information challenges the concept of generalized sympathetic activation in HF and suggests that the factors responsible for sympathetic activation result in a partitioning of excess sympathetic outflow to some but not all ti

Control of airway caliber by autonomic nerves in asthma and in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Autonomic nerves can influence airway caliber via their effects on airway smooth muscle, bronchial vessels, and mucous glands and may therefore contribute to airway narrowing in asthma or in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Human lungs receive cholinergic, noradrenergic, and peptidergic efferents and several types of afferents. Cholinergic nerve activity contributes to airway narrowing both in asthma and in COPD. Reflex vagal activity may be enhanced because of epithelial damage and exposition of sensory nerve endings to nonspecific irritants. Other possible mechanisms include def

Treating the Broken Heart: Role of Stellate Ganglion Blockade in Takotsubo Syndrome.

Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is an acute stress-induced cardiomyopathy characterized by transient left ventricular dysfunction, often mimicking acute myocardial infarction but without obstructive coronary artery disease. Although typically reversible, TTS can be complicated by serious adverse events, including life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. The pathophysiology is complex but strongly linked to sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity and a surge in catecholamines, often termed "neurogenic stunned myocardium." This review discusses the role of arrhythmias in TTS, the influence of the aut…

Sympathetic augmentation in hypertension: role of nerve firing, norepinephrine reuptake, and Angiotensin neuromodulation.

There is growing evidence that essential hypertension is commonly neurogenic and is initiated and sustained by sympathetic nervous system overactivity. Potential mechanisms include increased central sympathetic outflow, altered norepinephrine (NE) neuronal reuptake, diminished arterial baroreflex dampening of sympathetic nerve traffic, and sympathetic neuromodulation by angiotensin II. To address this issue, we used microneurography and radiotracer dilution methodology to measure regional sympathetic activity in 22 hypertensive patients and 11 normotensive control subjects. The NE transport in…

Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis in an Adult: An Uncommon Case of Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an uncommon acute, rapidly progressive autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that is most often due to infection or immunization. Generally, it is monophasic, but there is potential for recurrence and risk for development of multiple sclerosis. Although there has been literature documenting autonomic dysreflexia and hypertensive emergency in 2 pediatric cases of ADEM, to our knowledge there has not been a case detailing paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity in an adult patient with ADEM. This case report describes a fulmina

Renal and cardiac effects of renal sympathetic denervation and carotid baroreceptor stimulation.

Cumulative evidence nowadays supports the dominant role of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation in patients with hypertension, congestive heart failure, and renal dysfunction. During the last years innovative interventional treatments [renal sympathetic denervation (RSD) and baroreflex activation therapy (BAT)] have emerged and accompanied by sustained reductions of blood pressure (BP) levels. Moreover, these promising therapies are favorable not only on BP regulation but also on the SNS overdrive-related organ damage. The present review focuses on the association of SNS activation with…

[Renal denervation in the treatment of hypertension].

Therapy resistant hypertension is common in hypertensive patients. The kidneys play an important role in the sympathetic nervous system overactivity associated with hypertension. Percutaneous transluminal ablation of renal nerves is a novel treatment strategy for resistant hypertension decreasing both renal and systemic sympathetic activity. Renal denervation resulted in significant blood pressure reduction within 6 months in a multicentre, prospective, randomized trial. The treatment has proved safe and blood pressure reduction appears sustained up to 2 years. It also improves glycemic contro…
