HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders at Moi teaching and referral hospital, Eldoret, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection causes a myriad of neurological complications including cognitive deficits referred to as HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND). With the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy, there has been an epidemiological shift in cognitive disorders with a decline in the more severe HIV-Associated Dementia (HAD) to an increase in the less severe HAND: Asymptomatic Neurocognitive Impairment (ANI) and HIV-associated Mild Neurocognitive Disorder (MND). Central Nervous System (CNS) involvement in HIV interferes with cognitively d

Clinicolaboratory profile of expanded dengue syndrome - Our experience in a teaching hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Classic dengue fever presentation has expanded its horizon by involving various organ systems and is named as expanded dengue syndrome. This changing presentation and rising burden across the globe may lead to delayed diagnosis and under reporting of this syndrome. AIM OF STUDY: To analyze clinicolaboratory profile of patients with expanded dengue syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: About 520 cases of expanded dengue syndrome as per World Health Organization definition criteria 2012 were studied with their informed consent. Detailed history, thorough clinical examination, and rele

GEOGRAPHIC TONGUE: PATTERN OF PRESENTATION IN A SOUTH WESTERN NIGERIAN TEACHING HOSPITAL.

BACKGROUND: Geographic tongue (GT) is one of the commonly seen lesions in Oral Medicine Clinic. It tends to show varying pattern of presentation. Excessive immune response and immune modulation has been implicated in the pathogenesis and this justified the use of steroid in the management. OBJECTIVE: This study describes the epidemiology, clinical presentations and treatment outcomes of the 21 cases of GT seen at the Oral Medicine Clinic of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals' Complex, Ile Ife (OAUTHC) over a period of 10 years and compared the findings with the results from other p…

Distribution of potential eye and tissue donors within an Australian teaching hospital.

Eye and Tissue donation has the capacity to transform lives, yet the vast majority of potential in-hospital donors are not recognised. Studies which describe the relative importance of specific units or wards in determining the size of the donor pool are limited. The aim of this study was to map the distribution of potential Eye and Tissue donors within the study hospital. A 12-month retrospective analysis of all patient deaths at the study hospital was undertaken. The ability to donate corneal, heart valve, bone and skin tissue was investigated. Patients were classified as potential donors if

Histological types of soft-tissue sarcomas at the lagos university teaching hospital.

OBJECTIVE: There is scanty data on histologically diagnosed soft-tissue sarcomas in the Nigerian literature. This is due to paucity of facilities for ancillary testing as well as a dearth of specialist soft tissue pathologists. Knowledge however of the common soft-tissue sarcomas is vital for the establishment of an effective sarcoma service. The aim of this study, therefore, was to determine the histological spectrum of soft-tissue sarcomas in Lagos, Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Archival haematoxylin and eosin (H and E)-stained slides were retrieved and reviewed by a team of soft-tissue p

Streptococcus agalactiae bacteremia in non-pregnant adult patients at two teaching hospitals.

Streptococcus agalactiae or group B streptococcus (GBS) is a frequent pathogen in immunocompromised adults. The aim of this study was to determine the relative frequency, clinical presentation, antimicrobial susceptibility profile, and risk factors associated with GBS bacteremia in non-pregnant adult patients. We conducted a retrospective analysis of blood cultures performed in two hospitals between the years 2009-2013. From 1110 bacteremia episodes, 13 were caused by GBS, all of which were susceptible to ampicillin. GBS bacteremia was more frequent in females and in patients older than 60 yea

Teaching multiply controlled intraverbals to children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.

Reciprocal conversations, instructional activities, and other social interactions are replete with multiply controlled intraverbals, example … ts under prompt delay with error correction conditions; however, 4 participants required additional teaching (i.e., DOR, modified DOR, modified prompt delay with error correction). Based on these findings, when prompt delay with error correction is not sufficient to establish multiply controlled intraverbals, prompted DORs may be an effective alternative.
