OBJECTIVES: Haemoglobinopathies are the most widespread inherited disorders in the world, and are also common in Turkey. Haemoglobinopathies are preventable with control programmes. Therefore, the Ministry of Health initiated a control and prevention programme in 33 provinces in Turkey. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of haemoglobinopathies in Erzurum as part of the programme mentioned above, and to discuss the need for premarital screening in a non-prevalent region (Erzurum) of a prevalent country (Turkey) as part of a national control programme.

This prospective study was carried out in two university hospitals between January 2000 and December 2002. The diagnosis of brucellosis was made with compatible clinical findings, positive Brucella agglutination > or =1/160 titres, and/or the isolation of Brucella species. The diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) may depend on the detection of the parasite in histologic sections, the growth of the promastigotes in culture, or the identification of parasite by other techniques. OBJECTIVE: To determine the location and radiological characteristics in children with abdominal hydatid disease (HD).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-one children (average age: 7.2 years) with abdominal HD were studied. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of acetone and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) extracts of 45 different propolis samples from the Mugla province of Turkey were investigated. Antimicrobial activity of propolis varied depending on propolis sample, dosage of propolis, and the extraction solvents for all test microorganisms. Antimicrobial activity of all propolis samples increased with increasing dosage without reaching a plateau at the highest dosage tested. Pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) has not been appropriately investigated in Turkish children and therefore a study was undertaken to determine the causes of PUO and to evaluate which clinical procedures are useful in establishing a diagnosis. A total of 102 children fitting the classical PUO criteria seen in our clinic between 1995 and 2002 were investigated retrospectively.
