The cystometrograms of 61 patients with a history of stress incontinence and no other urinary symptoms were evaluated. Of the sixty-one patients, seven had unstable bladders and in seven of the patients stress incontinence could not be demonstrated. It was concluded that all patients with stress incontinence in whom surgery is being contemplated should be subjected to urodynamic study regardless of their history.

BACKGROUND: Urinary catheters are frequently used in perioperative care, yet their overuse contributes to iatrogenic complications including catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and urethral trauma. In response, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued guidelines in 2009 to minimize inappropriate perioperative catheter use. OBJECTIVES: To determine the safety and efficacy of transurethral electrovaporization of the prostate (TVP) in men with lower urinary tract symptoms.
METHODS: A prospective trial of 114 consecutive patients who underwent TVP since August 1994 was conducted. The mean follow-up period was 12.3 months. 'Clam' enterocystoplasty has been performed in 23 patients in the treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction. Twenty patients had neurogenic disorder while three were neurologically normal. Caring for patients who have an indwelling urinary catheter is a common feature of clinical nursing practice in the acute care environment, which for some patients is essential to their medical management. However, evidence suggests that in many cases catheterization may be unjustified, exposing the patient to a significant risk of acquiring a urinary tract infection, which extends length of stay and imposes an extra burden of care and cost. Improving the care for these patients depends on good education, implementation of best practice, adequate resources, and effective devices and treatment.

The patient was a 92-year-old male whose chief complaint was urinary retention. The X-ray film showed multiple overlapping calcification shadows in the penile region. Renal insufficiency was speculated to be due to post-renal obstruction. Under the diagnoses of closure of the preputial orifice by balanoposthitis followed by urinary retention and preputial calculi, an urgent dorsal incision of the prepuce was made. Then, stone removal and indwelling catheter placement were performed. Renal function recovered soon after the operation, and the patient could urinate freely without catheterization.

We analysed 1438 deliveries by caesarean section (CS) with regard to urological complications such as urological infections and urinary tract injuries. There were five accidental cystotomies, but no ureteral injury and no urogenital fistula. Serious urological complications are rare and further complications, such as urogenital fistulae and urosepsis, can be avoided if the injury is recognised and repaired properly during the operation. Emphysematous cystitis is a relatively rare form of urinary tract infection.
