OBJECTIVE: Glaucoma is an irreversible chronic eye disease that leads to vision loss. As it can be slowed down through treatment, detecting the disease in time is important. However, many patients are unaware of the disease because it progresses slowly without easily noticeable symptoms. Currently, there is no effective method for low-cost population-based glaucoma detection or screening. Recent studies have shown that automated optic nerve head assessment from 2-D retinal fundus images is promising for low-cost glaucoma screening. In this paper, we propose a method for cup to disc ratio (CDR)

Nearly 60% of people with HIV in New York State are over 50 years of age. After town halls and a statewide survey of long-term survivors, older people living with HIV, and their providers, the Quality of Care Program of the AIDS Institute in the New York State Department of Health developed a statewide quality improvement project that aimed to improve screening for functional impairments among people aging with HIV. Thirteen sites reported outcomes of a pilot project using a modification of the World Health Organization's Integrated Care of Older People (ICOPE) intrinsic capacity screen in sma

The goals of the health maintenance visit in school-aged children (five to 12 years) are promoting health, detecting disease, and counseling to prevent injury and future health problems. During the visit, the physician should address patient and parent/caregiver concerns and ask about emergency department or hospital care since the last visit; lifestyle habits (diet, physical activity, daily screen time, secondhand smoke exposure, hours of sleep per night, dental care, safety habits); and school performance. Poor school performance may indicate problems such as learning disabilities, attention

INTRODUCTION: Presbyopia, an age-related loss of near vision, affects approximately 80% of adults over 40 and 100% of adults over 60. Although correctable with inexpensive reading glasses, fewer than 20% of those affected in low- and middle-income countries have access to appropriate correction. Uncorrected presbyopia impairs daily functioning and productivity. The impact of presbyopia on health workforce performance remains unexplored, despite the impact of data accuracy on patient safety and the increasing reliance on mobile data entry and digital tools. This study assesses whether near-visi

People with hearing-motion synaesthesia experience sounds from moving or changing (e.g. flickering) visual stimuli. This phenomenon may be one of the most common forms of synaesthesia but it has rarely been studied and there are no studies of its neural basis. We screened for this in a sample of 200+ individuals, and estimated a prevalence of 4.2%. We also document its characteristics: it tends to be induced by physically moving stimuli (more so than static stimuli which imply motion or trigger illusory motion); and the psychoacoustic features are simple (e.g. "whooshing") with some systematic

Falls are the leading cause of injury among patients 65 years and older in the United States. Many falls are preventable, and clinicians can help patients reduce the risk of falls. This involves screening for fall risk, assessing for modifiable risk factors, and implementing evidence-based interventions for prevention. Screening for fall risk is required as part of the Welcome to Medicare visit and Annual Wellness Visits. Screening involves asking patients if they have had 2 or more falls in the past 12 months, if they are presenting because of an acute fall, and if they have difficulty with w

Diabetes is a major cause of vision loss globally, yet this devastating complication is largely preventable. Early detection and treatment of diabetic retinopathy necessitates screening. Ocular imaging is widely used clinically, both for the screening and management of diabetic retinopathy. Common eye conditions, such as glaucoma, cataracts and retinal vessel thrombosis, and signs of systemic conditions, such as hypertension, are frequently revealed. As well as imaging by a skilled clinician during an eye examination, non-ophthalmic clinicians, such as general practitioners, endocrinologists,

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision impairment globally, necessitating early and accurate detection through effective screening methods. We focus on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in automating and enhancing DR diagnosis. Timely detection and classification of DR severity are critical for patient management and intervention. AI-driven DR classification frameworks typically consist of sequential stages: image preprocessing, optic disc (OD) localization and removal, blood vessel segmentation, feature extraction, and classification of DR severity. BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a serious eye complication that results in permanent vision damage. As the number of patients suffering from DR increases, so does the delay in treatment for DR diagnosis. To bridge this gap, an efficient DR screening system that assists clinicians is required. Although many artificial intelligence (AI) screening systems have been deployed in recent years, accuracy remains a metric that can be improved.
METHODS: An enumerative pre-processing approach is implemented in the deep learning model to attain better accuracies for DR severity grading. The prop

Endoscopic examination of the nasopharynx is a simple and rapid procedure. The inspection can be made through the nose. This method is recommended for screening. If abnormalities of the nasopharynx are disclosed and are to be studied in detail, and particularly if such abnormalities are to be documented photographically, it is necessary to inspect them through the oropharynx while the soft palate is drawn forward. It is possible under direct vision to take representative biopsy specimens, and it is easy to take photographs for the purpose of documentation, comparison and education. This proced
