Maternal deprivation affects goat kids' stress coping behaviour.

Maternal deprivation early in life has been shown to disrupt neonates' development. Nevertheless, separating the young animals from their dams soon after birth remains a common practice in dairy farm husbandry. This study investigated the effects of different rearing conditions on goat kids' stress coping abilities. Twenty female kids were raised together with their dams ('dam-reared') in a herd composed of other lactating goats and kids, while twenty female kids were separated from their dams three days after birth and reared together with same-age peers ('artificially-reared') and visually s

A deficit in face-voice integration in developing vervet monkeys exposed to ethanol during gestation.

Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders display behavioural and intellectual impairments that strongly implicate dysfunction within the frontal cortex. Deficits in social behaviour and cognition are amongst the most pervasive outcomes of prenatal ethanol exposure. Our naturalistic vervet monkey model of fetal alcohol exposure (FAE) provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the neurobehavioral outcomes of prenatal ethanol exposure in a controlled experimental setting. Recent work has revealed a significant reduction of the neuronal population in the frontal lobes of these monkeys. We

Sonic and electric fish: at the crossroads of neuroethology and behavioral neuroendocrinology.

Field and laboratory studies of weakly electric and sound-producing teleost fishes demonstrate how steroidal and non-steroidal hormones mediate the translation of neural events into behavior. The development of this research program has depended upon an interdisciplinary neuroethological approach that has characterized the neurophysiological properties of the motor and sensory pathways that lead to the production and detection of easily quantified highly stereotyped behaviors, namely, electric organ discharges (EODs) and vocalizations. Neuroethological studies of these teleosts have now integr

Birdsong and singing behavior.

Birdsong provides neuroscientists with a uniquely powerful model for studying imitative vocal learning in a system where the brain structures responsible for song learning and production are well known. The 4,500+ species of songbirds provide a remarkable diversity of songs with a variety of tonal, structural, and learning characteristics, but most studies of the neural bases of learning have concentrated on two domesticated species, the canary and the zebra finch. Important differences in the songs of these two species provide useful properties for comparative studies, which could be expanded

Intra-articular stabilisation of the equine cricoarytenoid joint.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The success of laryngoplasty is limited by abduction loss in the early post operative period. OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) in stabilising the cricoarytenoid joint (CAJ) and reducing the force on the laryngoplasty suture. HYPOTHESIS: Injection into the cricoarytenoid joint resists the forces produced by physiological laryngeal air flows and pressures thereby reducing the force experienced by the laryngoplasty suture. METHODS: Ten cadaver larynges were collected at necropsy and PMMA was injected into one CAJ at selected ra

Differential DNA methylation of vocal and facial anatomy genes in modern humans.

Changes in potential regulatory elements are thought to be key drivers of phenotypic divergence. However, identifying changes to regulatory elements that underlie human-specific traits has proven very challenging. Here, we use 63 reconstructed and experimentally measured DNA methylation maps of ancient and present-day humans, as well as of six chimpanzees, to detect differentially methylated regions that likely emerged in modern humans after the split from Neanderthals and Denisovans. We show that genes associated with face and vocal tract anatomy went through particularly extensive methylatio

The zebra finch paradox: song is little changed, but number of neurons doubles.

New neurons are added to the high vocal center (HVC) of adult males in seasonally breeding songbirds such as the canary (Serinus canaria) that learns new songs in adulthood, and the song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) that does not. In both cases, the new neurons numerically replace others that have died, resulting in a seasonal fluctuation in HVC volume and neuron number. Peaks in neuronal replacement in both species occur in the fall when breeding is over and song is variable. New neurons are added, too, to the HVC of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) that do not learn new songs in adulthood

Pleiotropic function of Dlx5/6 in the development of mammalian vocal and auditory organs.

Acoustic communication, a cornerstone of social interactions in mammals, relies on both vocal (effector) and auditory (receptor) organs, which display remarkable morphological diversity across species. The molecular mechanisms supporting the coordinated diversification of effector and receptor systems along with the evolution of species-specific acoustic communication are still poorly understood. A plausible hypothesis is that common genetic pathways orchestrate the parallel morphogenesis of vocal and auditory structures. Here, we addressed this question by generating mutant mice with targeted

A Chaotic Approach to Glottal Gap Voice.

OBJECTIVE: Airway glottic insufficiency, or glottal gap, may lead to a breathy voice quality. It is hypothesized that a glottal gap may be a source of nonlinearity in speech production. This study aims to gain a chaotic and acoustic profile of glottal gap voice provided by phonation of excised larynges subjected to the insertion of a metal shim in the posterior glottis. STUDY DESIGN: Nonrandomized quasi-experimental study. METHODS: Posterior glottal gap varied from 0 to 3.5 mm in 0.5 mm intervals. Each treatment was investigated independently in a sample population of eight excised canine la

Adult rat ultrasonic vocalizations and reward: Effects of propranolol and repeated cocaine administration.

BACKGROUND: Mechanisms underlying psychostimulant euphoria remain poorly understood. In adult rats, positive emotional states are associated with alterations in 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs): specifically, "trill" calls are promoted over "flat" calls. Here, we investigated the effects of acute and repeated cocaine administration, and-based on previous findings with amphetamine-their possible dependence on beta-adrenergic receptors. METHODS: Adult male Long-Evans rats received intraperitoneal drug or saline injections before daily USV recording. Fourteen 50-kHz call subtypes were anal

Controlling for activity-dependent genes and behavioral states is critical for determining brain relationships within and across species.

The genetic profile of vertebrate pallia has long driven debate on homology across distantly related clades. Based on an expression profile of the orphan nuclear receptor NR4A2 in mouse and chicken brains, Puelles et al. (The Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2016, 524, 665-703) concluded that the avian lateral mesopallium is homologous to the mammalian claustrum, and the medial mesopallium homologous to the insula cortex. They argued that their findings contradict conclusions by Jarvis et al. (The Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2013, 521, 3614-3665) and Chen et al. (The Journal of Comparat

Automated Quantification of Vocal Fold Motion in a Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Injury Mouse Model.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The goal of this study was to objectively examine vocal fold (VF) motion dynamics after iatrogenic recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury in a mouse surgical model. Furthermore, we sought to identify a method of inducing injury with a consistent recovery pattern from which we can begin to evaluate spontaneous recovery and test therapeutic interventions. STUDY DESIGN: Animal model. METHODS: The right RLN in C57BL/6J mice was crushed for 30 seconds using an aneurysm clip with 1.3-N closing force. Transoral laryngoscopy enabled visualization of VF movement prior to surger

Repertoire and classification of non-song calls in Southeast Alaskan humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae).

On low-latitude breeding grounds, humpback whales produce complex and highly stereotyped songs as well as a range of non-song sounds associated with breeding behaviors. While on their Southeast Alaskan foraging grounds, humpback whales produce a range of previously unclassified non-song vocalizations. This study investigates the vocal repertoire of Southeast Alaskan humpback whales from a sample of 299 non-song vocalizations collected over a 3-month period on foraging grounds in Frederick Sound, Southeast Alaska. Three classification systems were used, including aural spectrogram analysis, sta

Classification of glottic insufficiency and tension asymmetry using a multilayer perceptron.

OBJECTIVE: Laryngeal function can be evaluated from multiple perspectives, including aerodynamic input, acoustic output, and mucosal wave vibratory characteristics. To determine the classifying power of each of these, we used a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (ANN) to classify data as normal, glottic insufficiency, or tension asymmetry. STUDY DESIGN: Case series analyzing data obtained from excised larynges simulating different conditions. METHODS: Aerodynamic, acoustic, and videokymographic data were collected from excised canine larynges simulating normal, glottic insuffici

Communication impairments in mice lacking Shank1: reduced levels of ultrasonic vocalizations and scent marking behavior.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a strong genetic component. Core symptoms are abnormal reciprocal social interactions, qualitative impairments in communication, and repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior with restricted interests. Candidate genes for autism include the SHANK gene family, as mutations in SHANK2 and SHANK3 have been detected in several autistic individuals. SHANK genes code for a family of scaffolding proteins located in the postsynaptic density of excitatory synapses. To test the hypothesis that a mutation in SHANK1 contributes to the symptoms of autism, w

Glottic closing force: impact of thyroplasty on vocal cord paralysis in a pig model.

Reflex glottic closure is an essential component of a normal swallow. A lesion of the unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve weakens this reflex response, affecting the essential protective functions of the larynx and potentially resulting in aspiration pneumonia, sepsis, or death. Thyroplasty has been advocated to reduce glottic incompetence due to unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP). Although medialization thyroplasty has traditionally been evaluated in terms of its phonatory effect, its role in improving protective glottic closure has never been studied. The present study was designed to e
