A surprising finding related to executive control in a patient sample of hypersexual men.

INTRODUCTION: Patients seeking help for hypersexual behavior often exhibit features of impulsivity, cognitive rigidity, and poor judgment as well as deficits in emotion regulation and excessive preoccupation with sex. Some of these characteristics are also common among patients presenting with neurological pathology associated with executive dysfunction. Exploring relationships between dysregulated sexual behavior and executive deficits will enhance our understanding of hypersexuality. AIM: This study sought to assess whether patients seeking help for hypersexual behavior exhibit executive de

Cognitive impairment in chronic migraine compared to pseudotumor cerebri.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to define the prevalence of objective cognitive impairment in a group of chronic migraineurs, and to define how migraineurs with cognitive impairment differed from those without impairment, and in doing so to compare cognitive impairment in chronic migraine to another chronic headache-related disorder already associated with cognitive impairment (i.e. pseudotumor cerebri syndrome). OBJECTIVES: Cognitive impairment in migraine, especially chronic migraine, has been too little studied. Only a few studies have been done, demonstrating that cognitive impairment exists in ch

Hypothalamic Atrophy and Textural Changes in Polyglutamine Ataxias.

Background. Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) presents a complex genetic landscape, with over 40 subtypes. These autosomal dominant disorders manifest late onset and severe disability, primarily impacting the cerebellum but also involving other nervous system structures. While a single study has linked hypothalamic atrophy to SCA3, further research is needed to confirm and/or expand this association. This study aimed to investigate hypothalamic involvement in PolyQ SCAs, focusing on SCA 1, 2, 3, and 6. Methods. We studied 135 adult patients with genetically confirmed SCA (SCA1, SCA2, SCA3, and SCA6

The relationship between objective and subjective cognitive performance and clinical and MRI disease burden in early multiple sclerosis.

Subjective cognitive performance in multiple sclerosis (MS) correlates weakly with objective performance, but is more strongly associated with depression. We aimed to identify symptoms and brain MRI volumes related to subjective and objective cognitive performance. 205 MS subjects, diagnosed within the last 15 years, completed the SymptoMScreen, patient-reported Expanded Disability Status Scale, Neuro-QoL subjective cognitive and fatigue sub-scores, and Beck Depression Inventory. For the objective cognitive assessment the smartphone-based icompanion Symbol test was used. Volumetric variables w

Brain Activation During Suicide-Specific Cognition in Trauma-Exposed Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: The suicide Implicit Association Test (S-IAT) captures the strength of the implicit identification between self and death and is one of the few suicide-specific behavioral tasks that uniquely predicts future suicide risk. Thus, identifying brain regions associated with the S-IAT provides insights into the neural mechanisms underlying suicidality. METHODS: This study measured brain activation during the S-IAT with concurrent fMRI in a post-9/11 trauma-exposed veteran sample. In total, 37 post-9/11 veterans at low risk for suicide participated in this study as part of an ongoing l

Bioenergetic biomarkers as predictive indicators and their relationship with cognitive function in newly diagnosed, drug-naïve patients with bipolar disorder.

Mitochondrial dysfunction and disrupted bioenergetic processes are critical in the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder (BD), with cognitive impairment being a prominent symptom linked to mitochondrial anomalies. The tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, integral to mitochondrial energy production, may be implicated in this cognitive dysfunction, yet its specific association with BD remains underexplored. In this cross-sectional study, 144 first-episode, drug-naive BD patients and 51 healthy controls were assessed. Using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), serum TCA cycle metaboli

The impact of depressive symptomology, rumination and objective memory performance on subjective cognitive complaints.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment in depression can present as subjective or objective, but the intensity of the former is higher and is not correlated with the deficits measured in neuropsychological tests. We hypothesised that rumination would be associated with subjective cognitive impairment. METHODS: The study was performed through the online PsyToolkit platform. It included 168 healthy people and 93 people with depression. To examine memory, a recognition-type task was used with emotionally charged words as the stimulus. Depression symptoms were measured using the Beck Depression Inven

Examining memory performance in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD): A comparison study with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

The aim of this study is comparing directly the BDD and OCD disorders in terms of similarities and differences in memory function for the first time. 19 BDD patients, 15 OCD patients and 26 individuals in a healthy control group were recruited from three hospitals in Tehran. They were administered the following subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale: logical memory (immediate and delayed), verbal paired association (immediate and delayed), digit span and spatial span as well as the Rey-Osterrieth complex figure test (RCFT). The results showed that BDD and OCD groups had lower performance in com

Eosinophilia and clinical outcome of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a meta-analysis.

Numerous studies have investigated the association between eosinophilia and clinical outcome of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but the evidence is conflicting. We conducted a pooled analysis of outcome measures comparing eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic COPD patients. We searched articles indexed in four databases using Medical Subject Heading or Title and Abstract words including COAD, COPD, eosinophil, eosinophilia, eosinopenia from inception to December 2016. Observational studies and randomized controlled trials with parallel groups comparing COPD patients with

The pathogenesis of Crohn's disease.

This paper describes a program of research undertaken by the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Study Group at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine. The Group has tested the hypothesis that the primary pathological abnormality in Crohn's disease is in the mesenteric blood supply. The first experiments involved microcorrosion resin casting of the arterial supply of specimens of resected intestine affected by Crohn's disease. This revealed severe damage to submucosal blood vessels, even in areas that were not affected macroscopically by Crohn's disease. Resected specimens of bowel were examined af

Twenty-four-hour blood pressure and heart rate patterns in chronic hemodialysis patients.

To test the assumption that the previously reported abnormal 24-hour blood pressure (BP) variations in hemodialysis (HD) patients might be due to associated complications of chronic renal failure, we recorded the 24-hour noninvasive BP and heart rate (HR) patterns in 14 carefully selected chronic HD patients. No of the patients suffered from orthostatic hypotension, and all were free of any previously reported associated condition known to affect the 24-hour BP profiles. The BP and HR profiles were quantitatively analyzed using the periodogram method. The results were compared those from 14 co

Risk factors inducing the persistence of high-risk genital papillomaviruses in the normal cervix.

To evaluate the risk factors associated with persistence of human papillomaviruses (HPV) types 16, 18, and 33 in the normal cervix, a prospective study was carried out in Belgium of 323 women without cytological evidence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Demographic and clinical data were obtained by interview, and HPV DNA was assayed in cervical-swab specimens using the Fast Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction-based screening and confirmatory tests. A multivariable linear regression model was constructed using four well-known risk factors: the use of an oral contraceptive which is either

Varicella: complications and costs.

Varicella (chickenpox) has long been considered a benign, inevitable disease of childhood. Complications are generally mild and rarely severe, and virtually every individual is infected by adulthood. Infection is associated, however, with a high risk of serious complications in certain high-risk groups, such as leukemic children. Concerns about the severity of varicella in this population have led to the development and testing of a live, attenuated vaccine. Because of the favorable results thus far available, the vaccine may soon be licensed for use in high-risk individuals. The fact that a v

Memory specificity in aging: Detrimental and beneficial effects of item similarity.

The similarity of incoming information can influence the precision with which older adults remember the details of past experiences. While similarity can reduce memory precision through interference at encoding or retrieval, leading to poorer item-specific memory and increased false memories, it may also enhance retrieval by serving as a cue that supports retrieval of item-specific information. The present study investigated how the effects of similarity vary depending on the time point of memory assessment. Older participants (N = 887, 60-88 years) from the Berlin Aging Study-II encoded word-

Donepezil for cancer-related cognitive impairment: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) affects a significant proportion of cancer patients and survivors, impacting their memory, focus, mood, and quality of life. While non-pharmacological interventions have shown effectiveness in managing this condition, some studies have also explored various pharmacological agents, including donepezil, a reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. This compound demonstrated beneficial effects on cognition in Alzheimer's disease; however, its effectiveness in CRCI remains unknown. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy of
