We studied the role of ABH antigens in determining graft outcome in 104 patients who received HLA-identical bone marrow transplants for aplastic anaemia and acute leukaemia. Seventeen patients with aplastic anemia or acute leukemia received transplants from donors who had major ABO incompatibilities. Antibody titers were decreased by plasma and whole blood exchanges prior to marrow infusion. All 17 patients were successfully engrafted, and there was one possible rejection in the patient with the highest pretransplant anti-A IgG titer. Nine of 17 patients are currently alive. The extent of the familial occurrence of hemolytic disease of the newborn due to AO blood group incompatibility between mother and fetus was examined. A retrospective study of the diagnostic implications of conjugated hyperbilirubinemia complicating ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) was done by studying the records of 264 infants with ABO-HDN. Direct hyperbilirubinemia was found to complicate ABO-HDN in 3 per cent of the infants, all being full term. Eighty-seven per cent were female and familial occurrence was noted in half of the cases. Most of the infants presented with anemia on the first day of life. Our data suggest that this is a benign complication of ABO-HDN which clears within a month.

Results on 605 patients and 597 controls carefully matched in relation to sex, age, marital status and profession are reported. A higher frequency of nonsecretors, as well as an excess of B and lack of A2 were observed among the filarial patients.
