A single application (16 to 20 hours) of 1% gamma benzene hexachloride (GBH) lotion, when applied to a total island population of 178 persons in which seventy-four clinically had scabies, resulted in a cure rate of over 98%. Re-examination of the population at 10 and 21 weeks revealed only one remaining individual still having scabies. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of topically applied human amniotic epithelial cell (HAEC) culture supernatant on corneal inflammatory reaction in dogs. Headache after administration of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is common, affecting approximately half of patients treated. Post-ECT headache is typically treated with acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs but occasionally requires agents such as sumatriptan, opioids, or β-blockers. We report on a patient whose severe post-ECT headaches responded completely to methyl salicylate ointment, applied to the area of his temporalis and masseter muscles. Topical methyl salicylate is generally well tolerated and may be a viable option for some patients with post-ECT headache.

A superoxide dismutase (SOD) cream containing 0.6 mg/ml of bovine SOD was prepared. It was applied locally onto the skin and mucosal lesions caused by progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Behçet's disease, herpes simplex and burns. The lesions and symptoms were rapidly improved in many cases after its administration, even when the symptoms were stabilized for several weeks before the treatment. Although the trial was open-labelled, the topical application of SOD was concluded to be effective for these conditions.

An 86-year-old patient with corneal gutae and diabetes presented with a Listeria monocytogenes serpent ulcer on her right eye. Smears taken from the ulcer revealed Listeria monocytogenes serotype 4b. Despite specific antibiotic therapy including cephalosporins and systemic administration of amikacin, as well as topical gentamycin drops, the eye had to be enucleated on the 16th day after hospitalization. Massive fibrinous reaction and extreme pain causing the patient to reject alimentation were the clinical signs at this time. The anterior chamber aspirate taken perioperatively was sterile.

A 5-year-old German Shepherd Dog was examined because of anisocoria. Pupillatonia because of parasympathetic denervation of iris sphincter muscle was diagnosed. This finding, most commonly referred to as Adie's tonic pupil in human medical literature, illustrated such a case in a species other than man. Diagnosis consisted of measuring the change in size of the pupillary aperture in response to topical administration of 0.1% pilocarpine. It is hoped that this report will help practitioners to be cognizant of pupillatonia when sorting out anisocorias.

Low-dose methotrexate (MTX) is the backbone of treatment for extensive psoriasis vulgaris not responding to topical therapy. Since its induction for the treatment of psoriasis in the 1970, its short- and long-term side effect profile has been extensively studied. Hair loss with MTX has been reported mostly with high-dose MTX used in chemotherapy. Here, we report a case of guttate psoriasis who presented with acute-onset anagen effluvium following the administration of only two doses of MTX 7.5 mg per week.
