It is generally believed that the visual acuity of an amblyopic eye cannot improve significantly in adulthood. However, there have been reports of this occurring following visual loss in the fellow eye. Best-corrected visual acuity improvement in amblyopic eyes of children with strabismic amblyopia following strabismus surgery has also been reported. We present the case of an adult whose visual acuity in his amblyopic eye improved 4 Snellen lines over 28 months following strabismus surgery.

This study presents the results of all patients with congenital glaucoma who were managed at St John Ophthalmic Hospital, Jerusalem from 1981 to 1990. This involved 118 eyes, 174 surgical procedures, and 460 examinations under anaesthesia. All procedures showed decreasing success rates with time. However, trabeculectomy was clearly the most successful in the hands of general ophthalmologists. Careful, long term follow up with particular regard to both intraocular pressure and detection and treatment of amblyopia are emphasised.

A ten-year-old male child was referred with complaints of blurring of vision and deviation of the eye. On examination, the right eye has an esodeviation squint with a best corrected visual acuity of 6/60 Snellen's acuity and 6/6 Snellen's acuity in the left eye. Slit-lamp biomicroscope of the right eye showed coloboma at the 9 o'clock position with cataract. The rest of the anterior and posterior segments was normal in both eyes. Current techniques for repairing large eyelid colobomas require preparation of other tissue sites and occasionally more than one procedure. We present a technique that requires only one procedure and is limited to the colobomatous eyelid; in addition, it is specifically designed to help avoid postoperative astigmatic and obstructive amblyopia. Outcomes are demonstrated in 3 cases of hemifacial microsomia. Large colobomas on the upper eyelid can be successfully and aesthetically repaired with only one procedure, incising only the congenitally abnormal eyelid.

Two cases with congenital total ectropion of the upper eyelids are reported (1 bilateral and 1 unilateral). There were no associated ocular or general abnormalities nor any apparent causes. One child was born normally, the other by cesarean section. The disease is not caused by difficult labor through natural birth passages. The condition is usually cured by conservative therapy. If surgery is carried out, it should be performed as early as possible in order to rule out secondary infections, amblyopia, epidermization of the conjunctiva, etc.
