We have studied the action of several pore-blocking amines on voltage-dependent activation gating of batrachotoxin(BTX)-activated sodium channels, from bovine heart and rat skeletal muscle, incorporated into planar lipid bilayers. A novel method is proposed for the solvent extraction of niobium(V). A 0.1M solution of Aliquat 336S in xylene quantitatively extracts microgram quantities of niobium(V) from 0.01M ascorbic acid at pH 3.5-6.5. Niobium from the organic phase is stripped with 0.5M nitric acid and determined spectrophotometrically in the aqueous phase as its complex with TAR. Biogenic amines, which are components of tarantula Scodra griseipes venom, are studied using tandem mass spectrometry. Their heptafluoropropionic (PFP) derivatives are ionized under electron impact and isobutane-chemical ionization. Daughter- and parent-ion mass spectra under collisionally activated dissociation conditions provide a more detailed study of such derivatives. Discrimination of di(PFP)amines and tri and tetra(PFP)amines is possible because of the presence of diagnostic ions induced by collision.
