AIMS: To define the cardiovascular anomalies and the long-term outcomes in an Asian cohort with Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS).
METHODS: Data were retrieved from a retrospective chart review of patients who had a definitive diagnosis of WBS by fluorescence in situ hybridization between 1995 and 2005. All patients underwent echocardiography every 3-9 months. Ten patients underwent cardiac catheterization.

Obtaining this race-specific information is important because Westerners and Asians respond differently to hormone therapy. To investigate the prevalence of Essential Tremor (ET) in Singapore and compare the rates between Singaporean Chinese, Malays, and Indians, a community-based survey among a disproportionate random sample of 15,000 individuals (9000 Chinese, 3000 Malays, 3000 Indians) aged 50 years and above was conducted. In phase 1, trained interviewers conducted a door-to-door survey using a screening questionnaire for Parkinson's disease. In phase 2, medical specialists examined participants who screened positive to evaluate for the presence of postural or kinetic tremor of the upper limbs, or head tremor.

In this paper, studies on zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) are reviewed that were performed during the last ten years largely by scientists of the Martsinovsky Institute of Medical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine. New data on the taxonomy of Leishmania circulating in populations of Rhombomys opimus, their main host, and the results of field and laboratory studies allowed revision of certain concepts generally accepted in epidemiology and epizootology of ZCL in Central Asia.

A comparative study of Asian and non-Asian women's reproductive health was performed. The hospital case notes of 48 Asian and 51 non-Asian women, matched for age, were examined. The vitamin D state of 60 apparently healthy adult Hindu Asian couples living in Britain was studied on a community basis. Twenty six (22%) of the Asian subjects had pronounced vitamin D deficiency, defined as 25-hydroxycholecalciferol concentrations below 10 nmol/l (4 ng/ml), while none of the white controls had such low concentrations.
