Hyperactivity as dysfunction of activity, arousal, or attention: a study of research relating to DSM III's Attention Deficit Disorder.

Examined the recent shift in emphasis from overactivity to the related constructs of arousal, attention and impulsivity in the study of "hyperactive" children. Studies are reviewed that have led to a reconceptualization of the hyperkinetic disorder that focuses on underlying physiological arousal and attentional components. The adequacy of DSM III diagnostic criteria for Attention Deficit Disorder are considered in light of relevant research developments.

Introducing the Concept of Embodied Interconnectedness: Perspectives on Tactile Massage for Adolescents With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (adhd).

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd) often experience difficulties with attention, impulse control, and emotional regulation, which may limit engagement with traditional therapies. Body-based interventions may offer a complementary approach. Over the past two decades, research on affective touch and C-tactile (CT) fibres has advanced understanding of how gentle, slow stroking contributes to emotional regulation, stress reduction, and social bonding. While these studies demonstrate physiological and psychological effects of CT-targeted touch, translatio

A Telerehabilitation-Based Fine Motor Training Program for Children With Inattentive Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Children with inattentive attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often present with impairments in executive functions and fine motor skills in addition to core inattentive symptoms. However, evidence remains limited regarding structured telerehabilitation-based fine motor training for these outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the effects of a 12-week telerehabilitation-based fine motor training program on inattention symptoms, executive functions, and fine motor skills in children with inattentive ADHD. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial included 66 c

High-Intensity Virtual Reality Exergaming for Adolescents With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Protocol for a Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition affecting approximately 7% to 8% of children and adolescents, characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Adolescence represents a period of heightened vulnerability, during which pharmacological treatments are frequently limited by adverse effects, suboptimal adherence, and partial response. Physical exercise, particularly high-intensity interval training (HIIT), has demonstrated superior effects on inhibitory control and inattention compared with moderate-inten

The Prevalence and Sociodemographic Characteristics of Intellectual Disability with Co-Occurring Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Learning Disability.

Population-based estimates of intellectual disability (ID) and its co-occurrence with other neurodevelopmental disorders remain limited in the United States. Using data from the National Survey of Children's Health and the National Health Interview Survey (2021-2023), this study provides updated national estimates about the lifetime prevalence and sociodemographic characteristics of ID, with and without co-occurring attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disability (LD), among U.S. children ages 6-17 years. Across surveys, results revealed that lifetime prevalence of ID

Serum TLR4, NF-κB, and NLRP3 Levels in Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Case-Control Study.

Background: Increasing evidence suggests that inflammatory processes may be involved in the pathophysiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, clinical data regarding TLR4, NF-κB and NLRP3 in children with ADHD remain limited. This study aimed to compare serum TLR4, NF-κB, and NLRP3 levels between children with ADHD and healthy controls and to examine the associations between these inflammatory markers and ADHD symptom severity. Methods: A total of 42 children with ADHD and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. ADHD symptoms were assessed using the C

The Impact of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder on Home Spirometry and Other Parameters in People With Cystic Fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder leading to challenges in treatment adherence. Despite emerging evidence on the prevalence of ADHD in pwCF and its potential impact on treatment adherence, there remains a gap in knowledge regarding the impact of ADHD on disease monitoring behaviours in the telehealth era, particularly through the use of portable home spirometry. METHODS: This retrospective study analysed home spirometry data in a large adult CF centre from 2020 to 2024. The study included 17 pwCF with a confirmed ADHD diagnosis

Motor function testing rates and outcomes in Duchenne muscular dystrophy with comorbid autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy have a higher incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly autism spectrum and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders, than the general population. However, the clinical outcome assessments used in the evaluation of patients with Duchenne and as endpoints in clinical trials require significant patient cooperation, which can be challenging in those with severe behavioral issues and leads to their exclusion. With ongoing expansion of the therapeutic arsenal, we aimed to explore differences in motor function test completion and measurements

Web-Based Stress Management for Working Adults With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Single-Arm, Open Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: National and international guidelines advocate for a multimodal approach to treating adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), combining pharmacotherapy with psychological interventions. While recent reviews support cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as a viable treatment for ADHD in adults, evidence remains limited. Another challenge is the availability of psychological interventions, with stimulants remaining the primary treatment choice for adults with ADHD. One promising approach to increasing access to psychological interventions is the dissemination of internet-d

Editorial: New Insights Into the Complexities and Neurocognitive Correlates of Sleep in Adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Despite decades-long interest in sleep in individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-"restless sleep" was a symptom for diagnosing attention deficit disorder in the Third Edition of the DSM-our understanding of its role in the pathophysiology, trajectories, and functional outcomes of ADHD remains far from complete. This is perhaps no more so the case than in the developmental period of adolescence. The oft-described "perfect storm" of short and ill-timed sleep coinciding with bioregulatory maturation during adolescence1 may be further intensified for adolescents with ADHD

Association between methylphenidate use and long-term cardiovascular risk in paediatric patients with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: There have been concerns about the potential cardiovascular (CV) adverse effects associated with methylphenidate (MTH) use. However, only limited evidence exists on the long-term safety of MTH. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether MTH use is associated with long-term CV risk. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study using 2003-2017 data from the Health and Welfare Database in Taiwan. Patients newly diagnosed with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and between 3 and 18 years of age were included. Two treatment statuses were assessed: initial treatment ≥7 days and

The association between Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD) symptoms and disease severity in people with Cystic Fibrosis (pwCF).

BACKGROUND: The hallmarks of Cystic fibrosis (CF), chronic infection and inflammation, require intensive daily treatment to maintain and improve quality of life and outcome. The incidence of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is increased in chronic inflammatory diseases. Previous studies suggested that the prevalence of ADHD in people with CF (pwCF) is higher than in the general population. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between ADHD symptoms and parameters of CF disease severity, measured by demographic and clinical data. METHODS: Based on our previ
