BACKGROUND: Functional constipation is a common disorder worldwide and is found in all paediatric age groups. Functional constipation can be caused by delayed colonic transit or dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles. Standard medical care in paediatric practice is often based on clinical experience and mainly consists of a behavioural approach and toilet training, along with the prescription of laxatives. Evidence to evaluate the effectiveness of pelvic physiotherapy for this complaint is lacking.
METHODS/DESIGN: A two-armed multicentre randomised controlled trial has been designed. We hypo

BACKGROUND: The control of movement in humans is hierarchical and distributed and uses feedback. An assistive system could be best integrated into the therapy of a human with a central nervous system lesion if the system is controlled in a similar manner. Here, we present a novel wireless architecture and routing protocol for a distributed functional electrical stimulation system that enables control of movement.
METHODS: The new system comprises a set of miniature battery-powered devices with stimulating and sensing functionality mounted on the body of the subject. The devices communicate wi

Asthma, the most common chronic disease in children and adolescents in industrialized countries, is typified by airway inflammation and obstruction leading to wheezing, dyspnea, and cough. However, the effect of asthma does not end with pulmonary changes. Research has shown a direct link between asthma and stress and psychiatric illness, which if untreated results in heightened morbidity and effects on society. The link between asthma and psychiatric illness, however, is often underappreciated by many pediatric and child mental health professionals. This article reviews the diagnosis and treat

BACKGROUND: Biofeedback is an established non-pharmacologic technique commonly used in the treatment of migraine and tension type headaches. Multiple published studies have suggested that biofeedback is effective in reducing the frequency and severity of headaches, often allowing patients to decrease their dependence on medication. Studies have also suggested that biofeedback may effect a decrease in medical utilization.
OBJECTIVE: Assess the efficacy of biofeedback in reducing the frequency and severity of migraine and tension type headaches.
DESIGN: Randomized, prospective, single blind, s

Biofeedback combined with electrical stimulation is an appealing conservative therapeutic option in patients with faecal incontinence. A total of 51 patients with faecal incontinence referred to our proctological division from March 2004 to June 2008 were studied. All patients were treated with biofeedback plus electrical stimulation. All patients underwent, on average, twice-weekly 15-minute electromyography-biofeedback training sessions followed by 5 minutes of electrical stimulation. Patients satisfaction, physiological data, clinical symptoms and a modified Wexner score were used to assess

Interest in nonpharmacologic interventions for chronic tension-type headache has increased in recent years, with many professional organizations recommending behavioral treatments such as relaxation training, biofeedback, and cognitive-behavioral therapy alongside pharmacologic treatments. Although the efficacy of behavioral interventions is well-documented, several potential barriers in dissemination and implementation exist that have precluded more widespread adoption of behavioral treatments. This article briefly reviews the core components and efficacy of behavioral treatments for tension-

Eight severely epileptic patients, four males and four females, ranging in age from 10 to 29 years, were trained to increase 12-14 Hzeta EEG activity from the regions overlying the Rolandic area. This activity, the sensorimotor rhythm (SMR), has been hypothesized to be related to motor inhibitory processes (Sterman, 1974). The patients represented a cross-section of several different types of epilepsy, including grand mal, myoclonic, akinetic, focal, and psychomotor types. Three of them had varying degrees of mental retardation. SMR was detected by a combination of an analog filtering system a

Previously, we demonstrated that placebo analgesia (PA) accompanies reductions in neural activity during painful stimulation. This study investigated areas of the brain where the neural activity was increased during PA. The literature has associated PA with two potential mechanisms of action; one sustained (e.g., engaged for the duration of PA), the other, transitory (e.g., a feedback mechanism). We propose that PA results from the engagement of two complementary pain-modulation mechanisms that are identified with fMRI data as a main effect for condition or a time *condition interaction. UNLABELLED: Among all coloproctological diseases, hemorrhoids rank first among the reasons for visiting a proctologist. Its prevalence is 130-145 per 1.000 adults, and its proportion in the structure of colorectal diseases ranges from 34 to 41%. After hemorrhoidectomy, a long period of rehabilitation is necessary. There are long periods of incapacity for work (at least two weeks) and quite high complications rate, which generally leads to economic burden. Therefore, an urgent problem of current coloproctology and physiotherapy is the development of new approaches to medical rehabilitation of t

Despite the tendency toward sphincter-saving surgical procedures, a small proportion of rectal cancers must still be treated by abdominoperineal resection (APR). The physical, psychological and social consequences of a permanent abdominal stoma are a challenge to perform a continent perineal colostomy. Most of the attempts originate from experiences with gracilis muscle transposition in the treatment of fecal incontinence, in particular Pickrell's operation. Functional results are however conditioned by the fact that the transposed muscle takes up a different function and its natural evolution

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Chronic pain (CP), affecting approximately 20 % of adults globally, imposes a profound burden on individuals and healthcare systems. This condition, characterized by persistent pain, muscle stiffness, and emotional distress, often results in a complex interplay of physical and psychological factors that exacerbate symptoms and hinder recovery. Biofeedback (BFB), a non-invasive intervention, offers a promising rehabilitation strategy by enabling individuals to monitor and self-regulate physiological responses, such as muscle tension, heart rate, and skin temperature.

PURPOSE: Pelvic floor physical therapy (PFPT) is recommended for conditions including constipation and fecal incontinence. There is limited evidence exploring characteristics of physical therapy practices, attitudes toward treating evacuation disorders, and potential barriers to care that may influence treatment outcomes. Therefore, a better understanding of these aspects of PFPT is needed. The purpose of this study was to survey PFPT practices, using the Chicagoland area as a microcosm. We aimed to explore practice characteristics, available treatment modalities, and attitudes toward treatmen

CONTEXT: Individuals with shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) exhibit changes in corticospinal excitability, scapular kinematics, and scapular muscle-activation patterns. To restore the scapular kinematics and muscle-activation patterns in individuals with SIS, treatment protocols usually include scapula-focused exercises, such as scapular-orientation and strength training.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether scapular-orientation and strength training can reverse the altered corticospinal excitability of recreational overhead athletes with SIS.
DESIGN: Randomized controlled clinical trial.

Panic disorder (PD) is a debilitating condition that drives medical spending at least twice as high as medically matched controls. Excessive utilization of healthcare resources comes from emergency department (ED), medications, diagnostic testing, and physician visits. Freespira is an FDA-cleared digital therapeutic that treats PD and panic attacks (PA) by correcting underlying abnormal respiratory physiology. Efficacy of Freespira has been established in prior studies. This paper reports on a quality improvement program that investigated whether treating PD patients with Freespira would reduc

PURPOSE: Video games provide a promising platform for rehabilitation of speech disorders. Although video games have been used to train speech perception in foreign language learners and have been proposed for aural rehabilitation, their use in speech therapy has been limited thus far. We present feasibility results from at-home use in a case series of children with velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) using an interactive video game that provided real-time biofeedback to facilitate appropriate nasalization.
METHOD: Five participants were recruited across a range of ages, VPD severities, and VPD e
