Parasitoid disturbance populations in agroecosystems can be maintained through the provision of habitat refuges with host resources. However, specialized herbivores that feed on different host plants have been shown to form host-specialized races. Parasitoids may subsequently specialize on these herbivore host races and therefore prefer parasitizing insects from the refuge, avoiding foraging on the crop. Evidence is therefore required that parasitoids are able to move between the refuge and the crop and that the refuge is a source of parasitoids, without being an important source of herbivore

DNA repair genes have been proposed as candidate cancer susceptibility genes. The excision repair cross-complementing rodent repair deficiency, complementation group 2 (ERCC2)/xeroderma pigmentosum complementary group D (XPD) protein is considered to be a key enzyme in nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway. To elucidate whether common ERCC2 variants are associated with lung cancer susceptibility, we conducted a case-control study consisting of 339 cases with primary lung cancer and 358 controls matched on age, gender and ethnicity in a Chinese population. Six haplotype tagging single-nucleo

An unfavourable root-crown (R/C) ratio caused by short dental roots may result from a developmental deficiency, root resorption after orthodontic treatment, or dental trauma. In the assessment of root shortening, subjective grading has often been used. For objective tooth measurements, varying materials and methods may make the results impossible to compare. This study used a simple, objective method to assess the R/C ratio (relative root length) of mature permanent teeth from panoramic radiographs (PRGs), tested its reproducibility and calculated the mean values of R/C ratios and their variat

The hamster flank organ has served as a model to study androgen-dependent responses of the skin, but the quantitative response of hair follicles to androgenic stimulation has been neglected. We assayed the hair follicle response to testosterone (T) and compared it to the response of the sebaceous glands and of the dermal pigment in the Golden Syrian hamster flank organ. Because of biologic variation in male animals and uneven absorption of hormone from parenteral injections, we implanted silastic capsules 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 cm in length filled with crystalline T subcutaneously into female ham

Non-invasive biomarkers of immune function are increasingly important for assessing health, welfare and disease risk in zoo and wild mammals, particularly because they support repeated monitoring while minimizing handling-related disturbance. Secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA), a key component of mucosal immunity, can be quantified from faecal samples and provides a practical measure of gut-associated immune activity without invasive sampling. We conducted a systematic literature review of 21 peer-reviewed studies that quantified faecal IgA across diverse mammalian taxa and ecological contexts.

Robust nuclear segmentation in 3D microscopy images is a critical yet unsolved challenge in quantitative cell biology. The main challenges are the scarcity and variability of annotated volumetric datasets. Since these data are difficult to obtain, most state-of-the-art approaches, including Cellpose, segment individual 2D slices and then heuristically reconstruct 3D volumes, thereby losing critical spatial context. Our analysis of expert annotator performance confirms that ignoring 3D context introduces substantial variability in nuclear detection and annotation. While a few 3D models are trai

Trial-to-trial variability of neural responses has been linked to important aspects of neural computation and is essential for understanding how neuronal populations respond. While current overdispersion models treat each neuron's gain as independent of each other, this assumption fails to capture the network statistics of neuronal populations. As no existing model can capture overdispersed structured spiking gain-modulation across a neural population, network-level gain covariance remains largely unstudied. We thus present the Poisson matrix-normal latent variable (PMNLV) model, which extends

The Pseudomonas syringae complex (Psc) is a group of globally distributed phytopathogens responsible for substantial agricultural losses. Although bacteriophage-based biocontrol has shown promise against Psc, no studies have examined phages targeting blueberry-tropic Psc lineages. Here, we isolated phages infecting Psc strains from diseased highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), and evaluated their suitability for biocontrol using a multi-stage screening pipeline incorporating host-range analysis, comparative genomics, environmental stability testing, in vitro antibacterial efficacy assays

BACKGROUND: Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) formerly known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), characterized by hyperandrogenism, affects approximately 7.1-15.1% of women of reproductive age. While disease-causing CYP21A2 and CYP11B1 variants are well-studied, the contribution of synonymous variants to clinical and hormonal variations remains unclear. This study investigated whether synonymous and non-synonymous variants associated with phenotypic heterogeneity.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 275 premenopausal women (110 PMOS women and 165 healthy controls) underwent compreh

Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) variants contribute to human disease, yet systematic evaluation of their functional impact is limited by the lack of high-quality benchmark datasets for computational tool development. To address this, we curated three comprehensive datasets, lncRNAVar-Literature, lncRNAVar-GWAS, and Mpravardb, by integrating disease-associated variants from published studies and genome-wide association analyses with putatively benign variants derived from the 1000 Genomes Project. Using these datasets, we characterized structural, miRNA-targeting, and evolutionary features disting

OBJECTIVE: This paper presents an ultrasound strain-divergence imaging technique, which quantifies complex tissue kinematics without being constrained by imaging coordinates. An in vivo application of the technique was demonstrated on median nerve (MN) mobility. Transverse mobility of MN, a potential biomarker for evaluating MN entrapment in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), is featured with large variations across different active gestures, individuals, and operators, so it remains inconclusive in literature.
METHODS: Ultrasound data of the MN in the transverse view during active thumb and finge

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop sex determination and age estimation equations using the trabecular structure of the third cervical vertebra from head and neck computed tomography (CT) images by analyzing bone microarchitecture.
METHODS: Trabecular bone structure was analyzed in a centrally located region of interest (ROI) within the third cervical vertebral body (C3) using CT scans from 132 Japanese adults (66 males and 66 females). Three primary measurements were taken: total vertebral volume (Tissue Volume, TV; mm3), trabecular bone volume (Bone Volume, BV; mm3), and trabecular bon

PURPOSE: Current clinical challenges in Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) include difficult-to-treat relapsed/refractory disease and considerable long-term toxicities of treatment. Since clinical risk factors lack discriminatory power, intensity of therapy is mainly based on tumor burden. Exploring HL genetics and tumor microenvironment (TME) might provide valuable insights for improved risk stratification.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we applied circulating tumor DNA sequencing to 243 patients obtained from pivotal German Hodgkin Study Group trials to identify subtypes of HL. Independent valida

PURPOSE: Experimental models have implicated the role of melatonin circadian rhythm disruption in refractive error development. Recent studies have examined melatonin concentration and its diurnal patterns on refractive error with equivocal results. This systematic review aimed to summarise the literature on melatonin circadian rhythms in myopia.
RECENT FINDINGS: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest Central, LILACS, Cochrane and Medline databases were searched for papers between January 2010 and December 2022 using defined search terms. Seven studies measured melatonin and circadi

Variations in the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the oxytocin receptors (OXTR) indicate individual differences in stress response, social behavior, and psychopathology, but very few paper mentioned OXTR as part of the mechanism linking exposure to air pollution and poor social interactions. The authors investigated the moderating role of Oxytocin receptor (OXTR) rs53576 polymorphism in the relationship between PM2.5 level and gut microbiota in children, in an attempt to provide some reference for the evidence linking biological and environmental factors to children brain development

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is an early onset, developmental disorder whose genetic cause is heterogeneous and complex. In total, 70% of ASD cases are due to an unknown etiology. Among the monogenic causes of ASD, fragile X syndrome (FXS) accounts for 2-4% of ASD cases, and 60% of individuals with FXS present with ASD. Epigenetic changes, specifically DNA methylation, which modulates gene expression levels, play a significant role in the pathogenesis of both disorders. Thus, in this study, using the Human Methylation EPIC Bead Chip, we examined the global DNA methylation profiles of biologi

The current study elucidated an association between gene variants and thrombocytopenia through the investigation of the exonic polymorphic landscape of hematopoietic transcription factor-GATA1 gene in dengue patients. A total of 115 unrelated dengue patients with dengue fever (DF) (N = 91) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) (N = 24) were included in the study. All dengue patients were confirmed through detection of NS1 antigen, IgM, and IgG antibodies against the dengue virus. Polymerase chain reaction using specific primers amplified the exonic regions of GATA1 while Sanger sequencing and chr

BACKGROUND: Multiple pathophysiological processes have been described in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Their inter-individual variations, complex interrelations, and relevance for clinical manifestation and disease progression remain poorly understood. We hypothesize that specific molecular patterns indicating both known and yet unidentified pathway alterations are associated with distinct aspects of AD pathology.
METHODS: We performed multi-level cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) omics in a well-characterized cohort of older adults with normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment, and mild dementia. Pro

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that can cause severe disease in immunocompromised individuals and congenitally infected neonates. In order to determine whether serum peptide profile could reveal disease markers or allow determination of toxoplasmosis aggressiveness, mouse sera were collected from acutely infected, chronically infected and control subjects, and analyzed by a quantitative label-free pepdomics approach (LC-MS/MS). Six hundred and seven endogenous peptides were identified among all samples, with peptide profiling of difference that readily distinguished be

BACKGROUND: Several genetic alterations, including point mutations and copy number variations in NLGN genes, have been associated with psychiatric disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and X-linked mental retardation (XLMR). NLGN genes encode neuroligin (NL) proteins, which are adhesion molecules that are important for proper synaptic formation and maturation. Previously, we and others found that the expression level of murine NL1 is regulated by proteolytic processing in a synaptic activity-dependent manner.
METHODS: In this study, we analyzed the effects of missense variants ass
