Sexual orientation identity and tobacco and hazardous alcohol use: findings from a cross-sectional English population survey.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between tobacco and hazardous alcohol use and sexual orientation and whether such an association could be explained by other sociodemographic characteristics. DESIGN: Cross-sectional household survey conducted in 2014-2016. SETTING: England, UK. PARTICIPANTS: Representative English population sample (pooled n=43 866). MAIN OUTCOMES: Sexual orientation identity (lesbian/gay, bisexual, heterosexual, prefer-not-to-say); current tobacco and hazardous alcohol use (defined as Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test Score ≥8). All outcomes were self-reporte

Differences in Substance Use and Mental Health by Sexual Identity Among U.S. Adolescents and Young Adults.

PURPOSE: This study examined associations between sexual identity and both substance use and mental health outcomes via nationally representative data from adolescents and young adults, using a six-response sexual identity assessment. METHODS: Data were from 11,328 adolescents (12-17 years) and 13,131 young adults (18-25 years) completing the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Sexual identity had six-response options: heterosexual, lesbian/gay, bisexual, using a different term, unsure/don't know, and do not understand the question. Substance use variables included alcohol, cannabis,

Intersectionality in substance use disorders: Examining gender, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation in the 2021-2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the impact of the intersection of gender, racial/ethnic identity, and sexual orientation among adults on substance use disorders (SUDs) from 2021 to 2022. METHOD: We conducted an analysis of persons (ages 18 and older) who responded to the 2021 and 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). Logistic regression models were constructed to examine odds of past-year SUDs at the intersection of gender, sexuality, and race/ethnicity. All analyses were design-corrected to enhance population representativeness and generalizability. RESULTS: Prevalence varied

Associations Between Sexual Orientation Dimensions and Cardiometabolic Diseases: Data From the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III).

OBJECTIVE: Sexual orientation can be measured across identity, attraction, and behavior. Sexual minorities are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes; however, it is not known whether cardiometabolic disease risk varies across these dimensions. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 36,309 adults who participated in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III; 2012-2013). Participants were categorized as heterosexual (reference), lesbian/gay, or bisexual across identity, attraction, and behavior using structured clinical

Post-traumatic stress disorder among LGBTQ people: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people (LGBTQ) are at increased risk of traumatization. This systematic review aimed to summarize data regarding the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for LGBTQ people and their subgroups. METHODS: Medline, Scopus, PsycINFO and EMBASE were searched until September 2022. Studies reporting a comparative estimation of PTSD among LGBTQ population and the general population (i.e., heterosexual/cisgender), without restrictions on participants' age and setting for the enrolment, were identified. Meta-analyses were based on odds ratio (O

Gambling, Gaming, and Internet Behavior in a Sexual Minority Perspective. A Cross-Sectional Study in Seven European Countries.

BACKGROUND: Addictive behavior of gambling, gaming and internet activity is partly a new research domain and has not been well investigated with regard to sexual minority populations. Although health disparities between sexual minorities and the general population are well documented, there is a lack of inclusion of sexual minorities in both research and clinic. Among lesbian, gay and bisexual populations certain features could be present that play a role for the development of addictive behaviors, such as social isolation and increased risk of other psychiatric problems. The aim of this study

Sexual orientation-based disparities in food security among adults in the United States: results from the 2003-2016 NHANES.

BACKGROUND: Access to sufficient, safe, culturally appropriate, and nutritious food is essential for maintaining both physical and mental health. Despite a growing body of evidence suggesting that sexual minority (SM) people experience significant disparities in socioeconomic and material resource security, there remains a paucity of empirical studies examining the prevalence of food insecurity among SM people relative to their heterosexual peers. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of adult and household food insecurity across sexual orientation groups in the United States after adjustin

Sexual Orientation Differences in Alcohol Use Disorder Across the Adult Life Course.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual orientation‒related disparities in alcohol use disorder are well-established. Yet, the degree to which sexual orientation differences in alcohol use disorder vary across the life course is poorly understood. There is also a limited understanding of how exposure to minority stressors and their relationship with alcohol use disorder vary as a function of age. METHODS: Using nationally representative data collected in 2012-2013, authors used sex-stratified time-varying effect models to estimate age-specific prevalence rates of alcohol use disorder among heterosexual and sexu

Harm from Others' Drinking Among Sexual Minority Adults in the United States.

Purpose: Due to discrimination and stigma, sexual minority adults may be more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to experience harms from other people's drinking. We compared prevalence of second-hand alcohol harms for sexual minority and heterosexual adults in the United States. Methods: Data from the 2014-15 U.S. National Alcohol Survey (n = 5516; 10.2% sexual minority adults) were analyzed using logistic regression with survey weights to account for sampling and nonresponse. Multivariable models included simple main effects of sexual identity on the past-year harm outcomes, as well

Sexual Orientation and Exposure to Violence Among U.S. Patients Undergoing Abortion.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the characteristics of patients undergoing abortion in the United States according to sexual orientation and exposure to sexual and physical violence. METHODS: Data for this observational study come from the Guttmacher Institute's 2014 Abortion Patient Survey, which obtained information from 8,380 individuals obtaining abortions at nonhospital facilities in the United States; 7,656 of those (91%) provided information on sexual orientation identity. We used simple logistic regression to assess differences between heterosexuals and three sexual minority groups-bisexual, les

Comparing treatment response between LGBQ and heterosexual individuals attending a CBT- and DBT-skills-based partial hospital.

OBJECTIVE: Despite a greater need for mental health treatment in individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and other sexual minority identities (LGBQ+), no prior study has examined mental health treatment outcomes for LGBQ+ populations receiving standard care. We compared individuals identifying as LGBQ+ or heterosexual on treatment outcomes following a partial hospital program based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). METHOD: A total of 441 participants (19% LGBQ+; mean age = 34.42 years; 56% female, 42% male, 2% nonbinary) attending

Condomless Vaginal Intercourse and Its Associates among Men Who Have Sex with Men in China.

BACKGROUND: HIV prevalence has increased rapidly among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China reaching alarmingly high levels in some cities. Bisexual MSM have potential to transmit HIV and syphilis to their female partners through condomless vaginal intercourse (CVI). Thus, estimation of the burden of CVI and identification of its associates seemed necessary to control this cross-gender transmission. METHOD: In a cross-sectional study, using respondent-driven-sampling and snowball sampling, 2958 MSM were recruited from seven Chinese cities, interviewed and tested for HIV and syphilis. Desc

Young male sex workers are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections, a cross-sectional study from Dutch STI clinics, the Netherlands, 2006-2012.

BACKGROUND: Male sex workers (MSW) are particularly exposed to sexually transmitted infections (STI) including HIV. In the Netherlands, data about STI among MSW are scarce. We estimated chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV diagnoses among MSW attending STI clinics and determined associated factors to guide prevention policies. METHODS: Using 2006-2012 cross-sectional national surveillance data from Dutch STI clinics, we calculated the proportion of consultations with a positive test for any of three bacterial STI or HIV among MSW. Associated factors were determined by using Poisson logisti

Substance abuse and mental health disparities: comparisons across sexual identity groups in a national sample of young Australian women.

A growing body of research amply documents health disparities related to substance abuse among sexual minority women. However, relatively little research has examined risk factors or predictors of substance use in this population and even less has explored differences among sexual minority subgroups. Using data from 8850 women aged 25-30 years in the 2003 survey of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health Survey (ALSWH) we compared rates of substance use (alcohol, marijuana and other illicit drugs) and potential predictors (e.g., depression, anxiety, perceived stress, lower levels o

[Anonymous and free-of-charge centers for screening for HIV infection. Results of 30 months of activity in Public Assistance in Paris hospitals].

The results of 30 months of activity of anonymous and free-of-charge HIV detection centres in Paris hospitals are presented. During this period (April 1988 to December 1990), 15805 subjects were seen. This population accounts for about 11 percent of all French anonymous and free detection centres in 1990, and for 26 percent of the number of subjects consulting in detection centres of the same type. Risk factors could be listed in 8132 consulting subjects: 73 percent were heterosexuals and not drug-addicts; 19.5 percent were homo- or bisexuals; 6 percent were drug-addicts; 0.6 percent were both

Therapy may explain recent deficits in AIDS incidence.

Since the middle of 1987, fewer consistently defined AIDS cases have been reported than expected among homosexual and bisexual men in the United States. This "AIDS deficit" was greater among homosexual and bisexual men in New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, but was also striking among all homosexual and bisexual men in the United States. Deficits were virtually absent among intravenous drug users (IVDUs) in the United States. Three independent sources of data--placebo-controlled trials, pharmaceutical company reports, and the San Francisco Men's Health Study--were used to demonstrat

Sex and Sexual Orientation Differences in Dark Triad Traits, Sexual Excitation/Inhibition, and Sociosexuality.

The fact that traits correlated with bisexuality and homosexuality were somewhat distinct is consistent with the idea that different developmental pathways may lead to these discrete sexual attraction patterns.
