Voltage-activated K+ currents of hypoglossal motoneurons in a brain stem slice preparation from the neonatal rat.

Whole cell, patch-clamp recordings were performed on motoneurons of the hypoglossus nucleus in a brain stem slice preparation from the neonatal rat brain. The aim was to investigate transient outward currents activated by membrane depolarization under voltage clamp conditions. In a Ca2+-free medium containing tetrodotoxin and Cs+, depolarizing voltage commands from a holding potential of -50 mV induced slow outward currents (Islow) with 34 +/- 6 ms (SE) onset time constant at 0 mV and minimal decline during a 1 s pulse depolarization. When the depolarizing command was preceded by a prepulse to…

Otitis media incidence and impact on the auditory brain stem response in lipopolysaccharide-nonresponsive C3H/HeJ mice.

Although mice of the C3H strain normally respond to bacterial lipopolysaccharide with appropriate immune system activation, mice of the C3H/HeJ substrain do not because of a gene defect. This suggests they may be more susceptible to opportunistic bacterial infections and more likely to have otitis media than a normally responding substrain, such as the C3H/HeSnJ. Therefore these two substrains were evaluated for incidence of spontaneous middle ear disease at 2, 4, 6, 10, 12, 15, and 18 months of age. Auditory brain stem response audiometry to pure tones of 4, 8, 16, 24, and 32 kHz was performe…

Recovery from brain-stem lesions involving the nociceptive pathways: comparison of clinical findings with laser-evoked potentials.

Dissociated sensory impairment in brain-stem disorders suggests a lateral lesion involving the spinothalamic tract. Evoked potential studies of the somatosensory system with standard electrical stimulation (SEP) generally fail to establish objective correlates of such sensory deficits, because electrical stimuli predominantly activate large myelinated fibers that project into the medial lemniscal system. In contrast, laser-evoked potentials (LEPs), in response to brief radiant heat pulses, stimulate nociceptive afferents of the superficial skin and allow evaluation of thin fiber and spinothala

Effect of vagal and splanchnic nerve section on Fos expression in ferret brain stem after emetic stimuli.

Previous studies have demonstrated that intraduodenal hypertonic saline (IHS) induces dense Fos expression within two regions of the ferret dorsal vagal complex (DVC): the area postrema (AP) and the medial subnucleus of the nucleus of the solitary tract (mn). The aims of the present experiments were to determine the peripheral pathways involved in excitation of DVC neurons after IHS and the relative importance of mn and AP excitation in the emetic response to this stimulus. The emetic response and the distribution of Fos were examined after IHS in animals that had received either vagotomy alon

Evoked potential findings in Behçet's disease. Brain-stem auditory, visual, and somatosensory evoked potentials in 44 patients.

We studied 54 patients with Behçet's disease, 41 males and 13 females, mean age 28 years. Forty-four patients had auditory brain-stem evoked potential (BAEP) recordings, 39 had pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEP), 27 had median nerve somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) recordings, and 25 tibial nerve SEPs. BAEPs were abnormal in 16 patients (52%) with neurological manifestations and in 4 (31%) without, because of decreased amplitude of wave V, prolonged I-III or III-V interpeak latencies, or uncertain/absent waves III and/or V. Eleven patients (40%) with neurological symptoms and

The differentiation of peripheral effector neuron failure from acute brain stem dysfunction in a critically ill patient.

A patient appeared to be in coma following pneumococcal meningitis, an intracerebral haemorrhage, and a cardiac arrest. Late in the course of his illness neurophysiological investigations confirmed a proposal that he also had a fulminant acute demyelinating polyneuropathy which, for a period of five days, rendered the patient completely unresponsive. The patient recovered and is now working without any disability.

A comparative study of brain-stem auditory evoked potentials and blink reflexes in posterior fossa tumor patients.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP's) and blink reflexes (BR's) were recorded from 40 patients with clinical and radiological evidence of posterior fossa tumors. They were examined in three groups according to the anatomical location of the lesion: Group A included 15 patients with midline tumors; Group B included 14 patients with cerebellar hemispheric tumors; and Group C included 11 patients with cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors. More of the 40 patients had BAEP abnormalities (32) than BR abnormalities (24). All of the 11 patients with CPA tumors had some kind of BAEP and BR abno

Afferent influences on brain stem auditory nuclei of the chicken: neuron number and size following cochlea removal.

The consequences of cochlea removal on neuron number and soma cross-sectional area were examined in the second order auditory nucleus (n. magnocellularis) of chickens. Both the age of the subjects at the time of cochlea (basilar papilla) removal (1-66 weeks) and the survival period (1-45 days) were varied. Neuron number and soma cross-sectional area were determined from Nissl stained sections. Additional material was processed to examine the relationship of ganglion cell loss to changes in n. magnocellularis. Neuron number decreased by 25-30% and soma cross-sectional area decreased by 10-20% i

Spinal cord transection, cerebral ischaemic and brain-stem injury in a baby following a Kielland's forceps rotation.

A full-term infant suffered a high cervical cord transection after a Kielland 's forceps rotation and extraction. Quadriplegia developed immediately and initial cerebral swelling was followed by atrophy with ventricular dilatation on CT examination. Death occurred at 60 days. At post-mortem complete necrosis of the cervical cord at C2-C3 with old haemorrhage in the meninges was found, with damage to the inferior corpora quadrigemina , the thalamus, striatum, cerebellar and cerebral cortex. The mechanism is discussed briefly.

Brain stem infusion of the gamma-aminobutyric acid antagonist bicuculline increases plasma insulin levels in the rat.

Previous neuroanatomical and physiological studies have indicated that nucleus ambiguus (Amb) is one source of vagal motoneurons in the brain stem that innervates the pancreas and which, when stimulated, increases insulin release. To investigate one of the neurotransmitter inputs to Amb neurons and its relation to insulin secretion, bicuculline, a specific gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) antagonist, was infused bilaterally into the Amb region as well as into a neighboring area, the rostral level of the lateral nucleus tractus solitarius (nts) of anesthetized male rats. Experiments were carried …

Evolution of mesenchymal stem cell therapies for traumatic brain injury: A decade of advances, mechanisms, and translational prospects.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a major global health challenge with limited effective treatments. This systematic review documents the significant evolution of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapies from traditional cell transplants to advanced cell-free products and engineered delivery systems. A systematic search was conducted across Web of Science, Embase, and PubMed/Medline for studies published from January 2015 to June 2025, resulting in the inclusion of 80 studies for qualitative synthesis. The review identifies four primary therapeutic mechanisms: reducing inflammation, protecting

Immunohistochemical characterization of neural stem cells in brains of adult brachycephalic dogs in comparison with canine oligodendroglioma cells.

Brachycephalic dogs, characterized by unique dome-shaped skulls and limited cerebral cortical volumes, are predisposed to brain tumors, particularly oligodendrogliomas. Canine oligodendrogliomas often arise adjacent to the cerebral ventricles and express several neural stem cell (NSC) markers, including sex-determining region Y-box transcription factor (SOX) 2, suggesting that NSCs are their origin. To investigate why oligodendrogliomas are more prevalent in brachycephalic dogs, the quantity, immunophenotypes, and proliferative activity of NSCs were examined and compared in the brains of adult

CXCL10 is a crucial chemoattractant for efficient intranasal delivery of mesenchymal stem cells to the neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in newborns. Recent research has shown promise in using intranasal mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy if administered within 10 days after Hypoxia-Ischemia (HI) in neonatal mice. MSCs migrate from the nasal cavity to the cerebral lesion in response to chemotactic cues. Which exact chemokines are crucial for MSC guidance to the HI lesion is currently not fully understood. This study investigates the role of CXCL10 in MSC migration towards the HI-injured brain. METHODS: HI was induced in male and fe

Neurovascular compression syndrome of the brain stem with opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome combined with vestibular paroxysmia and autonomic symptoms.

We describe a rare case of neurovascular compression syndrome (NVCS) of the brain stem and opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) complicated with vestibular paroxysmia (VP) and autonomic symptoms. Moreover, we discuss the case with respect to the available information in medical literature. A 36-year-old man with vertigo and nausea had difficulty standing, and was transported by an ambulance to our hospital. He had VP, opsoclonus, cervical myoclonus, anxiety, and restless legs syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging at hospitalization showed that the dolichoectatic vertebral artery was in contact w…

Human stem cells transplanted into the rat stroke brain migrate to the spleen via lymphatic and inflammation pathways.

Despite mounting evidence of a massive peripheral inflammatory response accompanying stroke, the ability of intracerebrally transplanted cells to migrate to the periphery and sequester systemic inflammation remains unexamined. Here, we tested the hypothesis that human bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells intracerebrally transplanted in the brain of adult rats subjected to experimental stroke can migrate to the spleen, a vital organ that confers peripheral inflammation after stroke. Sham or experimental stroke was induced in adult Sprague-Dawley rats by a 1 hour middle cerebral artery occlusio
