BACKGROUND: Tumors of the thymus are very rare in the pediatric population. This study examines the current trends and outcomes of children with thymus tumors.
METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) registry was queried for all patients <20 y of age with primary thymic malignancies from 1973 to 2008.
RESULTS: A total of 73 pediatric patients were identified with malignant thymic tumors. The median age at diagnosis was 13 y old. Among the 20 patients that presented with distant disease, 70% died. Conversely, among the 23 patients that presented with locoregional diseas

Although computed tomography (CT) has been an explosive development over the past several years resulting in great improvement in the preoperative localization of orbital tumors and other pathologic processes, it has its limitations in terms of providing specific histologic diagnoses. The cases selected for this presentation illustrate some of these limitations, and some of the lessons learned from our experiences during the past few years.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a high performance tool for morphological assessment and tissue characterization in the presurgical work-up of scrotal tumors. A wait-and-see attitude is now possible for benign lesions identified as epidermoid cysts. Pathology examination remains more pertinent for an exhaustive assessment of local extension, but MRI can provide a convincing, if not definitive, distinction between seminomatous and non-seminomatous germ cell tumors.

A retrospective review of 189 fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies of the mediastinum from four university medical centers was performed. Review of Diff-Quick- and Papanicolaou-stained direct smears was performed from a series of 189 FNA biopsies along with surgical pathology correlation obtained in 42% of the cases. Seventy-four pediatric patients with parotid gland tumors were seen during a 52-year period. Seventy percent of the lesions were benign and 30% were malignant. When the primary treatment is either subtotal or total parotidectomy, the recurrence rate was 2.3%.
