Physiological and practical effects of progesterone on reproduction in dairy cattle.

The discovery of progesterone (P4) and elucidation of the mechanisms of P4 action have an important place in the history of endocrinology an … d can be of critical importance in determining circulating P4 concentrations, particularly in dairy cattle. During timed artificial insemination (AI) protocols, elevations in P4 are achieved by increasing number of CL by creating accessory CL or by supplementation with exogenous P4. Dietary manipulations can also alter circulating P4, although practical …

[Potential involvement of selenium in the occurrence of milk fever in cattle].

OBJECTIVE: Frequent occurrence of parturient paresis (milk fever [MF]) and a partly unsatisfactory treatment success raises the question as to whether in addition to the known causes, other factors influence the incidence and success of MF treatment. Trace elements, including selenium (Se), are involved in bone metabolism, however, there is little knowledge regarding the influence of Se on MF development. The aim of this study was to analyse the concentrations of Se and the statistical relationships to parameters associated with Se influence in downer cows. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 19

Meta-analysis of Brucella seroprevalence in dairy cattle of Ethiopia.

This meta-analysis estimates a single-group summary (effect size) for seroprevalence of Brucella spp. exposure in dairy cattle of Ethiopia. It also attempts to identify study-level variables that could explain the variation in apparent seroprevalence. The literature search was restricted to studies published in English language from January 2000 to December 2013. A template was designed to retrieve the most biologically plausible and consistent variables from the articles. A total of 29 published papers containing 40 animal-level studies were used in the analyses. The single-group summary of B…

Babesia bovis infection in cattle in the southwestern Brazilian Amazon.

The present study provides the first epidemiological data on infection with Babesia bovis in cattle raised in the southwestern Brazilian Amazon. Blood clot samples were filtered through nylon cloth before being submitted to DNA extraction. PCR and nested-PCR were applied to assess the frequency of infection with B. bovis in calves with ages from 4 to 12 months bred in 4 microregions each in the states of Rondônia and Acre. After the DNA was extracted from the samples, the infection in cattle was investigated by amplification of the "rap1" gene from B. bovis. The DNA amplification results revea…

The hour of transition into luteolysis in horses and cattle: a species comparison.

Hourly blood sampling in both horses and cattle indicate that the transition between the end of preluteolysis and the beginning of luteolysis occurs within 1 h, as manifested by a change in progesterone concentrations. Each species presents a separate temporality enigma on the relationship between pulses of a prostaglandin (PG) F2α metabolite (PGFM) and the hour of the progesterone transition. In horses, relatively small pulses of PGFM occur during preluteolysis (before transition) and at transition. Oxytocin, but not estradiol, increases and decreases concomitantly with the small PGFM pulse a…

Dermatopathy in juvenile Angus cattle due to vitamin A deficiency.

In juvenile cattle, vitamin A deficiency is reported most commonly as a neurological condition; only rarely are there dermatologic manifestations. In the current study, alopecia, severe epidermal and follicular orthokeratosis, and acanthosis due to hypovitaminosis A are reported in 2 of 32 Angus calves, with a third animal suspected. Affected animals responded to vitamin A supplementation, and no additional calves displayed signs. Vitamin A acts on skin by regulating DNA transcription in keratinocytes, reducing the number of tonofilaments and desmosomes, both involved in cell-to-cell adhesion.…

[Accuracy and repeatability of clinical examinations postpartum in dairy cattle].

A variety of diagnostic tests are utilized during herd health examinations at the herd and individual cow level. While most of these tests are based on the best available evidence it has to be considered that each diagnostic test generates type 1 and 2 errors. Such diagnostic errors can lead to treatment errors with relevant clinical and pharmacological as well as ethical and economical consequences. The objectives of our studies were to generate science-based information on the repeatability and accuracy of relevant diagnostic methods utilized in postpartum monitoring of dairy cows. Both rect

Seroprevalence of Leptospira Hardjo in the Irish suckler cattle population.

BACKGROUND: Prior to the present study, the seroprevalence of leptospirosis in Irish suckler herds was unknown. In this study, we describe the herd and animal-level prevalence of Leptospira Hardjo infection in the Irish suckler cattle population. For the purposes of the study, the 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland were divided into 6 regions from which a representative number of herds were selected. A herd was considered eligible for sampling if it was not vaccinating against leptospirosis and if it contained ≥ 9 breeding animals of beef breed ≥ 12 months of age. In total, 288 randomly se…

Update on vaccination of cattle and wildlife populations against tuberculosis.

In this review, the status of vaccination strategies to reduce bovine tuberculosis of cattle and wildlife reservoirs of the disease is discussed, with a focus on recent developments. Recent work in vaccines to protect humans against tuberculosis has been followed by a similar surge of interest in developing vaccines against bovine tuberculosis. The human vaccine, bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) affords protection against tuberculosis in cattle, but this protection is variable. In addition, vaccination with BCG compromises control strategies based on skin testing animals. In general, no single va…

Proteome of the early embryo-maternal dialogue in the cattle uterus.

We analyzed embryo-maternal interactions in the bovine uterus on day 8 of development. Proteomic profiles were obtained by two-dimensional d … obtaining for first time the earliest evidence of involvement of the down-regulated NFkB system in cattle as a pregnancy signature pathway. Embryos enhanced the embryotrophic ability of UF and decreased uterine protein, while blood progesterone was unaltered. Twinfilin, hepatoma-derived growth factor, and synaptotagmin-binding cytoplasmic RNA interactin …

First report of Neospora caninum infection in cattle in Sudan.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Sudan to determine sero-prevalence and risk factors associated with Neospora caninum infection in non-vaccinated dairy herds and to assess importance of the disease. Blood samples were collected from a total of 262 animals from 25 herds. Sera were tested for antibodies against N. caninum using ELISA test. The prevalence rates of N. caninum antibodies in cattle were high both at herd level (44%) and at individual animal level (10.7%). Herd level infection rates were similar in Khartoum State (43.7%) and at Gazira States (44.4%). The overall prevalence r…

The first detection of Brucella canis in cattle in the Republic of Korea.

Twenty mammary lymph node samples were collected from cattle on a farm in the Republic of Korea. These cattle were serologically negative for Brucella by tube agglutination test (≤ 1:50) and serum agglutination test (≤ 1:50). Out of 20 lymph node samples, two samples were positive for Brucella growth on Brucella agar as well as blood agar. Tests for urease, hydrogen sulphide and reactions against monospecific sera A and M indicated that these two isolates (No. 15 and 16) belong to the genus Brucella. Genus specific, AMOS (abortus, melitensis, ovis, suis) and Bruce-ladder multiplex polymerase c…
