The first 3 months after BCNU wafers implantation in high-grade glioma patients: clinical and radiological considerations on a clinical series.

PURPOSE: Carmustine (1,3-bis[2-chloroetyl]-1-nitrosurea (BCNU)) wafers are approved for the local treatment of newly diagnosed and recurrent malignant glioma. Reassuring data on both safety and efficacy of treatment have been previously reported by phase III studies. Although most of related adverse events are reported in the first few months after surgery, there is a lack in the literature of radiological data regarding this period. Few anecdotal experiences have been reported about surgical bed cyst occurrence. The aim of our study is to analyse the radiological course of patients treated wi

Evaluation method of saliva and oral cavity mucous membrane in the aspect of holding a denture on an atrophic base.

The paper presents application of the authors' own method of investigating the secretion and elasticity of saliva as well as resilience of mucous membrane in evaluation of force holding the lower denture in the base. The object of research is a complete mucus lower denture cooperating with the base with a tooth-caving that is on the decline. Results of the tests of a horizontal force knocking the denture off the base were assumed as objective effectiveness evaluation criteria. Clinical investigation has been carried out in a group of 126 patients using diagnostic devices constructed according

Anatomical observations during microvascular decompression for idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (with correlations between topography of pain and site of the neurovascular conflict). Prospective study in a series of 579 patients.

BACKGROUND: The Micro-Vascular Decompression (MVD) procedure - developed for conservative treatment of idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is based on the NeuroVascular Conflict (NVC) theory. Although MVD has become very popular over the last twenty years, its principles and value remain controversial. Detailed anatomical observations during posterior fossa exploration in patients with idiopathic TN may help to understand better the role of NVCs. METHOD: In this article, the authors report the anatomical observations made under the operating microscope in a consecutive series of 579 patients

The visuo-operative angle: computational 3D assessment of surgical trajectories toward irregular target areas in skull base corridors.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to introduce the visuo-operative angle (VOA) as a novel neuroanatomical metric for quantifying surgical exposure and visibility in skull base microsurgery. The VOA measures the alignment between surgical trajectories and target exposure areas in 3D space. Additionally, the authors explored its implementation in 3D photogrammetry of cadaveric models and 3D-segmented presurgical imaging models to assess the feasibility of VOA in experimental and clinical settings. METHODS: Five latex-injected human cadaveric specimens were used to evaluate various endoscopic

Invalid Trials Are Not Required to Observe Neural Correlates of Object-based Attention in Retinotopic Visual Cortex.

A central debated question in the study of object-based attention (OBA) is whether attention to the object-mediated deployment of attention is obligatory and automatic [Chen, Z., & Cave, K. R. Reinstating object-based attention under positional certainty: The importance of subjective parsing. Perception & Psychophysics, 68, 992-1003, 2006] or whether the pattern of results is driven by other non-obligatory factors, such as prioritization of invalid target locations [Shomstein, S., & Yantis, S. Object-based attention: Sensory modulation or priority setting? Perception & Psychophysics, 64, 41-51

Atypical waves: nonsporotrichoid Mycobacterium marinum skin infection in an immunocompromised scuba diver.

A 58-year-old man presented with an enlarging painful ulcer on his left medial knee. He had a history of psoriatic arthritis, treated with methotrexate and adalimumab for the last 5 years. He had travelled to over 20 countries in the past 2 years, and his hobbies included scuba diving and seawater/freshwater swimming. He recalled freshwater swimming in a cave lake in Brazil 1 year prior. Subsequently, he developed small erythematous papules on each knee with rapid resolution on the right knee. The left knee lesion slowly enlarged, and he sought medical attention in Ireland 9 months later. He r

A New Perspective on the Cavernous Sinus as Seen through Multiple Surgical Corridors: Anatomical Study Comparing the Transorbital, Endonasal, and Transcranial Routes and the Relative Coterminous Spatial Regions.

Background: The cavernous sinus (CS) is a highly vulnerable anatomical space, mainly due to the neurovascular structures that it contains; therefore, a detailed knowledge of its anatomy is mandatory for surgical unlocking. In this study, we compared the anatomy of this region from different endoscopic and microsurgical operative corridors, further focusing on the corresponding anatomic landmarks encountered along these routes. Furthermore, we tried to define the safe entry zones to this venous space from these three different operative corridors, and to provide indications regarding the optima

Feasibility of Transcatheter Closure of Large Secundum Atrial Septal Defect with Absent Superior or Inferior Rim.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical closure of a large secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) with an absent superior or inferior rim is the standard method of management, but transcatheter closure of such a defect is possible and feasible. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of transcatheter closure of large secundum ASD with an absent superior or inferior rim through implantation of a cheatham platinum (CP) stent at the entrance of the superior vena cava (SVC) or inferior vena cava (IVC) into the right atrium (RA) to create a suitable rim for subsequent complete closure of th

Comparative volatilomics identifies ubiquitous sulfur compounds inhibiting the fungal pathogen Rasamsonia argillacea.

UNLABELLED: Members of the phylum Actinomycetota, particularly Streptomyces species, are prolific producers of bioactive metabolites, and bioprospecting in unique environments may uncover novel species producing previously undescribed antifungal compounds. In previous work, Streptomyces strains isolated from cave moonmilk deposits completely inhibited the growth of Rasamsonia argillacea, an emerging fungal pathogen associated with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) and cystic fibrosis (CF). Cross-streak and bipartite Petri dish assays revealed that R. argillacea inhibition occurred specifical

Predicting in vivo cannabinoid-drug interactions mediated via inhibition of UDP-glucuronosyltransferases using in vitro studies and physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling and simulations.

We previously reported the inhibitory potential of the most extensively studied cannabinoids, cannabidiol (CBD) and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), along with their respective circulating metabolites, against a panel of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. In the current work, we characterized the inhibitory potential of these cannabinoids against a panel of recombinant human UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs). Upon screening CBD, THC, and their primary circulating metabolites (7-hydroxy CBD or 11-hydroxy THC) at 10 μM, cannabinoids likely to inhibit UGTs at pharmacologically relevant concentrations

Effects of different tooth grinding procedures on the occurrence of tooth injuries, skin lesions, performance and behaviour of suckling piglets.

BACKGROUND: Immediately after birth, newborn piglets fight to establish a teat order. During this process, lesions appear on the piglets' faces and on the sows' teats, which is why tooth resection is carried out on many farms in Germany even though it is known that this procedure is frequently resulting in pulp openings. The opening of a pulp cave is suspected to cause painful tooth alterations and may be an entrance for infectious agents. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of tooth resection on skin lesions, development of bodyweight and behaviour in suckling piglets. Four da

Extended characterisation of five archival tick-borne viruses provides insights for virus discovery in Australian ticks.

BACKGROUND: A subset of Australians who have been bitten by ticks experience a complex of chronic and debilitating symptoms which cannot be attributed to the known pathogenic species of bacteria present in Australia. As a result, there has been a renewed effort to identify and characterise viruses in Australian terrestrial ticks. Recent transcriptome sequencing of Ixodes and Amblyomma ticks has revealed the presence of multiple virus sequences. However, without virus isolates our ability to understand the host range and pathogenesis of newly identified viruses is limited. We have established a

Transcavernous approach to diseases of the anterior upper third of the posterior fossa.

OBJECT: The region in the upper anterior third of the posterior fossa is a surgically hidden, narrow corridor between the petroclival surface anteriorly and the surface of the brainstem posteriorly. Although several approaches have been described to help surgeons reach this region, few of them enable practitioners to reach the different corners of the area and provide as wide a view as the one achieved using the transcavernous route. METHODS: A transcavernous approach was used in 91 cases (50 complex upper basilar artery [BA] aneurysms, 30 upper petroclival junction meningiomas, five trigemin

A Novel Approach to the Diagnosis of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension: Noninvasive Assessment Using the MRI-Based CSF Flow Rigidity Index and Conventional MRI-Derived Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension-MR Score.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a condition marked by elevated intracranial pressure, often leading to vision loss if untreated. While CSF opening pressure is a primary diagnostic criterion, it lacks sensitivity in normotensive cases. This study aimed to develop a noninvasive, imaging-based diagnostic model integrating a novel MRI-Rigidity Index (MRI-RI) and a conventional MRI-derived IIH-MR Score to assess intracranial rigidity and improve diagnostic accuracy across the IIH spectrum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one participants were prospectively analyz

Paedomorphic patterns of gene expression in the eyes of Brook Salamanders.

Shifts in the timing of developmental processes (heterochrony) can lead to phenotypic diversification, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms explaining variation remain largely unexplored outside a few model systems. Extensive remodeling of the visual system occurs during amphibian metamorphosis making this a valuable process for studying the evolution of developmental mechanisms. Here we investigated how life cycle mode and ecology can influence heterochronic patterns of expression for eye development and maintenance genes across Brook Salamanders (genus Eurycea). This clade exhibits repeat

Proteomic Signatures of SARS-CoV-2 Susceptibility in Mexican Free-tailed Bats and Their Application to Viral Surveillance.

The increasing emergence of virulent pathogens necessitates novel approaches to predict and manage infectious disease risks. The importance of integrating observational and experimental approaches to studying host-pathogen interactions has long been recognized, as captive studies can mechanistically test hypotheses derived from field studies and identify causal factors shaping host susceptibility or tolerance of infection. However, captive experiments can also determine biomarkers of infection outcomes that could improve later interpretation of field data and identify at-risk hosts in wild pop
