BACKGROUND: Human adenoviruses (HAdV) elicit diverse infections, most notably within the respiratory tract. While HAdV is a target in clinical-use PCR assays to diagnose respiratory infections, techniques are not widely available to determine individual HAdV species within clinical specimens. An initial model was previously developed to predict HAdV species from BIOFIRE® Respiratory Pathogen Panels (RPP), evaluated in silico and through contrived specimens. Here, we report the first isolation of Wautersiella falsenii from the urine of an infant with a complicated urinary tract infection. W. falsenii was correctly identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation time of flight mass spectrometry. The identification was confirmed by 16S polymerase chain reaction. Susceptibility test results of this isolate are reported. Ciprofloxacin treatment resulted in clinical and microbiological improvement.

Of 1193 Texas slaughterhouse cattle serum samples assayed for anti-leptospiral antibodies by microscopic agglutination testing, 262 (22%) reacted with serovar pomona and 179 (15%) with serovar hardjo. Of 300 urine samples tested for leptospiral DNA by a polymerase chain reaction assay, 106 (35%) were positive. The high prevalence of leptospiral infection of cattle represents potential threats to human health and agricultural economics.

A recombinant pSC13D6 plasmid DNA was constructed based on cDNA fragments of genes encoding variable domains of heavy and light chains of the MKA 13D6 monoclonal antibody against glycoprotein of the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus. Abstract. An Israeli traveler returning from Tanzania presented with a relapsing febrile illness. A diagnosis of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense infection was established by blood smear after nearly a month. Blood polymerase chain reaction failed to provide an early diagnosis of human African trypanososmiasis. Recognition of suggestive signs should prompt physicians to perform repeated tests before ruling out human African trypanososmiasis.

A 21 year old woman presented with painful groin lymphadenopathy and malaise. Lymph node biopsy, to exclude atypical infection and malignancy, suggested the diagnosis of lymphogranuloma venereum. This diagnosis was confirmed by serology and polymerase chain reaction, with the patient subsequently admitting to a casual sexual contact within the United Kingdom. Alternative methods of investigation of this disease are discussed.
