PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to determine the injury risk behaviors and home safety measures in children with an intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder.
METHOD: The study sample included mothers of 100 children between the ages of 2 and 12 years.
FINDINGS: There was a significant difference between the home safety measures and the children's ages, the birth order of the children, and the mother's and father's ages. There was not a significant relationship between the children's ages, diagnosis, and Injury Behavior Checklist (IBC). There is a positive correlation between

There is a lack of evidence-based behavioral therapies or pharmacotherapies to treat repetitive behaviors found in autism. Effective behavioral therapies are needed to counter any negative consequences these behaviors may have on the child's early learning and socialization. The purpose of this proof-of-principle study was to test the feasibility of modifying exposure response prevention, an evidence-based strategy for obsessive-compulsive disorder, to treat the repetitive behaviors found in autism. Five school-aged participants (ages 5-11) diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder participat

PURPOSE: To describe the motor function and disability of children with postnatal cerebral infection leading to hemiplegia, and to determine the severity of their motor disability.
METHOD: The disablement process was used to describe these children. Participants included 13 children (7 girls and 6 boys, mean age 9.8 years). Traditional neurological assessment methods, together with the Movement Assessment Battery for Children and Paediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory, were used. The children's non-hemiplegic sides were also tested. To determine severity of motor disability, new defini

Poor readers perform worse than their normal reading peers on a variety of speech perception tasks, which may be linked to their phonological processing abilities. The purpose of the study was to compare the brain activation patterns of normal and impaired readers on speech perception to better understand the phonological basis in reading disability. Whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) was recorded as good and poor readers, 7-13 years of age, performed an auditory word discrimination task. We used an auditory oddball paradigm in which the 'deviant' stimuli (/bat/, /kat/, /rat/) differed in

BACKGROUND: Almost 10% of school-going children have specific learning disability (SpLD) in the form of dyslexia, dysgraphia and/or dyscalculia. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) occurs as a comorbidity in about 20% of these children.
AIMS: To document the clinical profile and academic history of children with SpLD and co-occurring ADHD.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Prospective observational study conducted in our clinic.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From August to November 2004, 50 consecutively diagnosed children (34 boys, 16 girls) were included in the study. SpLD was diagnosed on the ba

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: In most children referred to our department with a diagnosis of dyslexia, we have found an ocular disorder that had not been detected during previous ophthalmologic examinations. Exophoria and/or hypoaccommodation were the most common cause. Some of these children needed eye muscle surgery to improve the reading problems. However, these patients represent a selection. Therefore, we performed a field study to determine the percentage of children with reading disability caused by ocular disorders and the percentage of children with real dyslexia in a normal population.

Children with high levels of aggressive-hyperactive-impulsive-inattentive behavior (AHII; n = 154) were subdivided into those with (n = 38) and without (n = 116) adaptive disability (+AD/-AD) defined as a discrepancy between expected versus actual adaptive functioning. They were compared to each other and a control group of 47 normal children. Both AHII groups were more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder than control children; more symptoms of general psychopathology; greater social skills deficits; more parental

BACKGROUND: This investigation examines the question of whether decreasing wavelength of light and/or reducing luminance benefits oculomotor efficiency in normal and reading disabled (RD) children.
METHODS: Two groups of children were identified as normal or disabled readers using standardized reading tests. After suitable practice, eye movements were objectively measured with the Visagraph II as each of the subjects silently read a series of three different selections at their independent reading level with clear (control), gray, and blue filters. Four variables were measured for each subjec

Twenty reading comprehension-disabled (CD) and 20 reading comprehension and word recognition-disabled (CWRD), right-handed male children were matched with 20 normal-achieving age-matched controls and 20 normal-achieving reading level-matched controls and tested for left ear report on dichotic listening tasks using digits and consonant-vowel combinations (CVs). Left ear report for CVs and digits did not correlate for any of the groups. Both reading-disabled groups showed lower left ear report on digits. On CVs the CD group showed a high left ear report but only when there were no priming precur

INTRODUCTION: Children with an intellectual disability (ID) often manifest a developmental language disorder (DLD). However, conventional standardized DLD diagnostic tools often prove unsuitable for this population. Furthermore, no guidelines are provided on how speech and language pathologists (SLPs) should conduct the assessment. This study investigated how practitioners in German-speaking countries assess DLD in children with ID, including the role of multilingualism and practitioners' self-perceived competence.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 102 practitioners

BACKGROUND: Outdoor and risky play are associated with physical, cognitive, social, and emotional health and wellbeing throughout childhood. All children have the right to play, yet children with disabilities (CWD) are not engaging sufficiently in outdoor or risky play. There is limited literature exploring CWD participation in outdoor and risky play. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to summarize the literature exploring CWD experiences of outdoor and risky play, including definitions, types, preferences, benefits, barriers, and strategies to support CWD engagement in outdoor and risky pla…

BACKGROUND: Intellectual disability (ID) is a developmental disorder that causes considerably below-average intellectual performance and adaptive behaviour. In the context of the present study, families raising a child with ID are reported to experience multiple challenges that appear not to be well documented in Pakistan.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Pakistan, which was conducted in Karachi, Pakistan, followed participatory action research, in which the researcher and participants examined their existing experiences of informal social support and then created, implemented, and evaluated actions t

BACKGROUND: Children with a learning disability experience a range of inequalities and adverse life events that put them at greater risk of mental health problems. The construct of emotional literacy has been shown to be a moderating factor of how life stress affects mental health. Teaching emotional literacy in schools may therefore be an effective way to promote positive mental health. There is an identified need for adapted emotional literacy programmes in special schools.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether it is feasible to conduct a large-scale randomised controlled trial of the effectivene

Oral health is an important aspect of general health, and is of great importance, especially in disabled children. A school is an ideal place for the implementation of preventive programs. Considering the significance of the prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease in disabled children, and the important role of teachers in the oral health promotion of students, this study aimed to assess the oral health knowledge, attitude, and performance of teachers and healthcare workers in special schools for the disabled children in Isfahan. This descriptive-analytical study evaluated the oral

BACKGROUND: Children with disability are over-represented in out-of-home care (OOHC) in Australia and internationally. Yet we know little about their circumstances, placement types, support needs, and the outcomes of their trajectories and wellbeing through care.
OBJECTIVE: We examine the wellbeing and outcomes of children with and without disabilities in OOHC.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We use panel data from waves 1-4 of the Pathways of Care Longitudinal Study (POCLS) collected between June 2011 and November 2018 by the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), Aust

We investigated the effect of conceptual transparency in the physical structure of manipulatives on place-value understanding in typically developing children and those at risk for mathematics learning disabilities. Second graders were randomly assigned to one of three manipulatives conditions: (a) attachable beads that did not make the denominations or ones in the denominations transparent, (b) pipe cleaners that made only the denominations transparent, and (c) string beads that made both the denominations and the ones in the denominations transparent. Participants used the manipulatives to r
