INTRODUCTION: Global heat waves increasingly threaten food security, by reducing food supplies and negatively impacting livestock health. This research investigates nutritional interventions aimed at improving rabbit productivity and health, with a particular focus on mitigating the effects of heat stress (HS) conditions. Hence, this research investigates the potential of various feed additives to enhance growth, immunity, and overall health in environmentally stressed growing rabbits by reducing inflammatory and apoptotic signaling.

Diabetes is a life-threatening disease that affects different parts of the body including the liver, kidney, and pancreas. The core root of diabetes is mainly linked to oxidative stress produced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Berberis lyceum Royle (BLR) is the source of natural products. It comprises numerous bioactive compounds having antioxidant activities. In the current investigation, silver nanoparticles from BLR root extract were synthesized, characterized, and assessed for antidiabetic potential. UV spectrophotometry, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infra-re

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Vitamin D binding protein (DBP) serves a dual function as a vitamin D carrier and actin scavenger. Free DBP is present in high concentrations in serum, while a smaller pool is bound to lipoproteins like HDL and VLDL. The role of DBP's interaction with lipoproteins remains unclear. Given that HDL has been proposed to have both atheroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, we sought to compare whether HDL-associated DBP and/or total serum DBP could serve as useful biomarkers for assessing disease severity in psoriasis and cardiovascular disease.
METHODS: Psoriasis (PSO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: At present obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in India are the most challenging health problems. It is also well accepted that obesity is a significant risk factor for the development of metabolic syndrome and other degenerative diseases. Many studies have reported that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the adiponectin (ADIPOQ) gene have been associated with obesity and its related disorders. Here, we aimed to investigate the association of two intronic variants in ADIPOQ gene, -3971A>G (rs822396) and +276G>T (rs1501299) with obesity and metabolic syndrome.

While numerous studies have aimed to develop strategies to inhibit the development and progression of atherosclerosis, recent attention has focussed on the regression of pre-existing atherosclerotic plaques. As important regulator of total body cholesterol homeostasis, the liver X receptor (LXR) could possibly be an important target to induce regression. Here, we describe the effect of LXR activation by the synthetic agonist T0901317 on lesion regression in different mouse models with early fatty streak lesions or advanced collagen-rich lesions. Although T0901317 caused a dramatic increase in

OBJECTIVE: Obesity, diabetes, fatty liver, and hypertension are major determinants of the metabolic syndrome. The effects of aldosterone and mineralocorticoid receptor blockers on fatty liver are largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationships between aldosterone and the development of fatty liver.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our experiments, we performed adrenalectomy (ADX) or administered 100 mg/kg/day eplerenone, a specific mineralocorticoid receptor blocker, to male C57BL/6 mice fed with a 60% fat diet for 20 weeks.
RESULTS: High-fat diet led to metabolic sy

The mechanism of metal ion-catalyzed oxidative modification of apolipoprotein E (apoE) in human very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and its inhibition by glycosaminoglycan (GAG) was investigated in vitro. The VLDL oxidation catalyzed by Cu2+ led to the lipid peroxidation, the formation of aggregates, and covalent modification of apoE. The modified apoE lost heparin-binding activity. These results suggest that the lipid peroxidation of VLDL and modification of apoE cause impairment of lipid uptake by cells and deposit the oxidized lipids in the tissues. The lipid peroxidation and oxidative modi

OBJECTIVE: Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are a newly discovered subset of immune cells that promote tissue homeostasis and protect against pathogens. ILCs produce cytokines also produced by T lymphocytes that have been shown to affect atherosclerosis, but the influence of ILCs on atherosclerosis has not been explored.
APPROACH AND RESULTS: We demonstrate that CD25(+) ILCs that produce type 2 cytokines (ILC2s) are present in the aorta of atherosclerotic immunodeficient ldlr(-/-)rag1(-/-) mice. To investigate the role of ILCs in atherosclerosis, ldlr(-/-)rag1(-/-) mice were concurrently fed an a

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of global mortality, with ischemic heart disease, stroke, and other related conditions contributing to over one-third of deaths worldwide. The rising prevalence of CVDs is driven by aging populations and various risk factors, including poor diet, physical inactivity, and dyslipidemia. Recent studies suggest that natural supplements like sumac (Rhus coriaria L.) and cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum J. Presl) may have beneficial effects on lipid profiles and overall cardiovascular health. This study is designed to investigate the combined

Diabetic nephropathy, a common complication of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), is associated with abnormal lipid profiles, liver dysfunction, and kidney impairment. However, research on its association with trace elements in Iraqi patients is limited. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the association between lipid profile, liver function, and trace elements in diabetic nephropathy (DN) patients. In this study, 120 individuals were selected. Sixty of these individuals were labeled as the DN patient group, and 60 individuals were labeled as the healthy control group. A flame atomic absor

Previous work in younger males with recurrent idiopathic calcium urolithiasis (RCU) demonstrated inappropriately high postprandial phosphaturia, hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance, but normal glycemia. To investigate further whether these abnormalities occur also in RCU patients with a mean age corresponding to the life period with peak formation of calcium-containing stones, two trials were carried out in 155 males of comparable age and body mass index. All participants underwent a standardized laboratory examination, including collection of urine and blood before and following a test me

Epidemiologic studies have shown that insulin is a risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). Clinical studies have also demonstrated positive correlations between insulin and blood pressure, triglycerides, total cholesterol, fibrinogen, and plasminogen activator inhibitor. Moreover, there is an inverse correlation between insulin and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). These studies have provided evidence in support of the biologic plausibility of epidemiologic observations, but they have not clearly established insulin's role in the pathogenesis of human cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as

A novel series of substituted N-benzyl-N-phenyl-trifluoro-3-amino-2-propanols are described that reversibly inhibit cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP). Starting with screening lead 22, various structural features were explored with respect to inhibition of the CETP-mediated transfer of [(3)H]cholesterol from high-density cholesterol donor particles to low-density cholesterol acceptor particles. The free hydroxyl group of the propanol was required for high potency, since acylation or alkylation reduced activity. High inhibitory potency was also associated with 3-ether moieties in the ani

Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) frequently coexist due to overlapping risk factors such as metabolic syndrome and obesity. T2DM exacerbates the progression of NAFLD, increasing the risk of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Thus, early detection of liver fibrosis is crucial to prevent severe liver disease. A 2D shear wave elastography (2D SWE) has emerged as a reliable non-invasive method for assessing liver stiffness, potentially reducing the need for liver biopsies and facilitating prompt treatment interventions. Methods This cro

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZNPs) and/or arsenic trioxide (ATO) exposure on the liver of adult male Sprague Dawley rats. Moreover, the probable ameliorative impact of gallic acid (GA) against ZNPs and ATO-induced hepatotoxicity and the possible underlying mechanisms were evaluated.
METHODS: Sixty male Sprague Dawley rats were distributed into six groups. The 1st and 2nd groups were orally given distilled water (1 ml/kg) and 20 mg GA/kg b. wt, respectively. The 3rd and 4th groups were orally given 100 mg ZNPs/kg b. wt and 8 mg A

OBJECTIVE: Metabolic syndrome and elevated lipids, related to cardiovascular risk factors, are more prevalent in schizophrenia and there has been much debate about the extent to which specific antipsychotics contribute more to the increased risk of developing hyperlipidemia and metabolic syndrome. Most studies have concentrated on fasting levels in patients recently started on medication. Randomized prospective studies of metabolic effects of 2nd generation antipsychotics using both fasting measures and provocative tests may provide results that are more informative. We present results of a ra

Climate change-induced heatwaves have increased the prevalence of heat stress (HS) in livestock, negatively impacting their physiology and productivity. Moringa leaves offer a feasible strategy through their acknowledged antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory benefits. Consequently, this study aimed to investigate the dietary effects of dried Moringa oleifera leaves (MOL) on the growth performance, hematological indices, thyroid function, blood biochemistry, immunity, and economic revenue of growing crossbred calves (Holstein Friesian × Baladi) under heat stress (HS) conditions. Several studies have reported the relationship between alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). Few studies, however, have investigated the causes of CIMT thickening in patients with ALD. The authors explored the causes of CIMT thickening in patients with ALD. The authors enrolled 152 patients who were stratified into groups: nonthickening CIMT with ALD (group A); thickening CIMT with ALD (group B); nonthickening CIMT without ALD (group C); and thickening CIMT without ALD (group D). The CIMT was significantly different between patients with and without ALD (χ 2=

OBJECTIVE: The dominant-negative mutation, P467L, in peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) affects adipose tissue distribution, insulin sensitivity, and blood pressure in heterozygous humans. We hypothesized that the equivalent mutation, PPARγ-P465L, in mice will worsen atherosclerosis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Apolipoprotein E-null mice with and without PPARγ-P465L mutation were bred in 129S6 inbred genetic background. Mild hypertension and lipodystrophy of PPARγ-P465L persisted in the apolipoprotein E-null background. Glucose homeostasis was normal, but plasma adiponectin was sig
