Economy-wide efforts to achieve net-zero emissions offer climate and air quality-related public health benefits from reducing fossil fuel combustion. However, carbon dioxide removal (CDR) may be necessary to meet emissions targets cost-effectively, and relying on CDR would forego some air-quality benefits. Here, we systematically quantify the regional air quality and public health implications of six CDR portfolios for the U.S. using a coupled modeling approach and compare those to a no U.S. climate action scenario. While both high- and low-CDR deployment avoid about $2.5-5.8 trillion USD2020

The ecological differentiation of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis lineages (S1, PS3, S1a/b) and Paracoccidioides lutzii across South America was analysed using environmental, climatic, edaphic, and anthropogenic data. Occurrences were linked to elevation, urbanisation, Köppen-Geiger climate classes, and bioclimatic variables. S1 exhibited the broadest ecological range, spanning mid-elevation uplands to lowland Amazonia and multiple climate zones (Af, Am, Aw, Cfa). PS2, PS3 and P. lutzii were mainly restricted to mid-elevation environments. PS2 was associated with slightly higher elevations; PS3

Wolbachia-based mosquito control strategies have gained significant attention as a sustainable approach to reduce the transmission of vector-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. These endosymbiotic bacteria can limit the ability of mosquitoes to transmit pathogens, offering a promising alternative to traditional chemical-based interventions. With the growing impact of climate change on mosquito population dynamics and disease transmission, Wolbachia interventions represent an adaptable and resilient strategy for mitigating the public health burden of vector-borne diseases. COVID-19 has been disturbing human society with an intensity never seen since the Influenza epidemic (Spanish flu). COVID-19 and Influenza are both respiratory viruses and, in this study, we explore the relations of COVID-19 and Influenza with atmospheric variables and socio-economic conditions for tropical and subtropical climates in Brazil. Atmospheric variables, mobility, socio-economic conditions and population information were analyzed using a generalized additive model for daily COVID-19 cases from March 1st to May 15th, 2020, and for daily Influenza hospitalizations (2017-2019) in Brazi

Plague, the causative agent of three devastating pandemics in history, is currently a re-emerging disease, probably due to climate change and other anthropogenic changes. Without understanding the response of plague systems to anthropogenic or climate changes in their trophic web, it is unfeasible to effectively predict years with high risks of plague outbreak, hampering our ability for effective prevention and control of the disease. Here, by using surveillance data, we apply structural equation modelling to reveal the drivers of plague prevalence in two very different rodent systems: those o

There is now abundant evidence that contemporary climatic change has indirectly affected a wide-range of species by changing trophic interactions, competition, epidemiology and habitat. However, direct physiological impacts of changing climates are rarely reported for endothermic species, despite being commonly reported for ectotherms. We review the evidence for changing physiological constraints on endothermic vertebrates at high temperatures, integrating theoretical and empirical perspectives on the morphology, physiology and behavior of marine birds. Potential for increasing heat stress exp

The dominant nitrogen (N) fluxes were simulated in a mountain forest ecosystem on dolomitic bedrock in the Austrian Alps. Based on an existing small-scale climate model the simulation encompassed the present situation and a 50-yr projection. The investigated scenarios were current climate, current N deposition (SC1) and future climate (+2.5 degrees C and +10% annual precipitation) with three levels of N deposition (SC2, 3, 4). The microbially mediated N transformation, including the emission of nitrogen oxides, was calculated with PnET-N-DNDC. Soil hydrology was calculated with HYDRUS and was

As integral components of ecosystems, rodents exhibit high sensitivity to environmental fluctuations. As a typical semi-subterranean rodent, the burrowing and foraging behaviors of the mole vole (Ellobius tancrei) profoundly impact local microhabitat structure and vegetation succession. Given its extensive distribution range, investigating the geographical distribution of the mole vole under climate change is critical for understanding its population dynamics and spatial patterns. To explore the impacts of climate change on the potential distribution of this species, we utilized an ensemble mo

Crop breeding faces mounting challenges from climate change, population growth, and shrinking farmland. While management and genetic improvement have contributed to yield gains, sustainable agriculture demands continuous progress to address local and future environmental stresses. Approximately 60% of past yield increases are attributed to improved abiotic stress resilience, yet further breeding advances are constrained by the complexity of environmental factors, which often co-occur dynamically within farming systems. Enviromics-an emerging field dedicated to high-throughput environmental cha

Vegetation carbon turnover time (τveg) dominates the uncertainty in terrestrial carbon cycle dynamics. Reports have shown that the τveg of mature or old-growth forests in North America and Europe has decreased because of faster carbon loss under global climate change. However, the temporal trend of τveg in widespread younger forests, which exhibit different growth patterns, remains inconclusive. Here, we consistently revealed a significant overall increase in τveg (0.025 ± 0.002 years per year) across China's forests that are characterized by a relatively young forest age structure, using mult

High-elevation plants operate within a tightly constrained carbon economy shaped by low temperature, short growing seasons, shallow soils, and reduced atmospheric CO2 partial pressure. Elevated CO2 and climate warming are widely expected to enhance carbon uptake in these systems, yet persistent biomass gains and long-term carbon sequestration remain inconsistent. Here, we synthesise experimental, observational, and modelling evidence to propose a three-gate framework: carbon gain (Gate 1), carbon use (Gate 2), and persistence (Gate 3) to explain alpine plant responses to global change. A potential impact of reactive halogens on climate and air quality is through oxidation of sulfur dioxide by hypohalous acids (HOX with X = Cl, Br, or I) to produce sulfate aerosols. This sulfate formation mechanism is typically not included in climate and air quality models, largely due to the limited observational evidence supporting its significance. In this study, we measured the oxygen isotopic composition of sulfate in aerosol particles as well as the concentrations of hypohalous acids during a field campaign in coastal Hong Kong. The oxygen isotopic signatures suggest that hypohalous ac

Rising global temperatures owing to climate change have direct and harmful effects on kidney health, mainly through heat stress and related acute kidney injury. Despite growing clinical evidence, the nephrology community has yet to incorporate environmental stressors into risk models and guidelines fully. This perspective examines the link between heat stress and kidney injury, identifies vulnerable groups, and discusses long-term effects, including the progression of chronic kidney disease. Drawing on epidemiological data, clinical experience, and real-world observations, we advocate the urge

The harmful diatom Pseudo-nitzschia produces the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA), threatening human health and seafood safety in a changing climate. However, global patterns of Pseudo-nitzschia abundance and the responses of DA production to underlying environmental drivers remain poorly understood, hindering accurate projections of their responses to environmental change. Using global meta-omics data from Tara Oceans, alongside field survey data from the Chinese coasts and the Southern Ocean, we present the first evidence that four of the most toxic species-Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries, Pseudo-ni

Environmental conditions significantly influence dengue fever transmission by affecting Aedes mosquito breeding. This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesize environmental health factors associated with dengue risk. A comprehensive search across multiple databases yielded 64 studies conducted in urban, peri-urban, and rural settings. Data were extracted and categorized thematically, and risk of bias was assessed using the JBI Checklists, Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and ROBINS-I tool, depending on study design. Eight key environmental health factors were identified: water storage practic

Habitat degradation and climate change are globally acting as pivotal drivers of wildlife collapse, with mounting evidence that this erosion of biodiversity will accelerate in the following decades1-3. Here, we quantify the past, present and future ecological suitability of Europe for bumblebees, a threatened group of pollinators ranked among the highest contributors to crop production value in the northern hemisphere4-8. We demonstrate coherent declines of bumblebee populations since 1900 over most of Europe and identify future large-scale range contractions and species extirpations under all

The impact of cosmic rays' energetic subatomic particles on climate and global warming is still controversial and under debate. Cosmic rays produce ions that can trigger fast reactions affecting chemical networks in the troposphere and stratosphere especially when a large amount of relevant trace gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide and water are injected by volcanic eruptions. This work focuses on synchrotron experiments and an ab initio theoretical study of the ion chemistry of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide radical cations reacting with water. These molecules catalyze a f

Atmospheric acidity is increasingly determined by carbon dioxide and organic acids1-3. Among the latter, formic acid facilitates the nucleation of cloud droplets4 and contributes to the acidity of clouds and rainwater1,5. At present, chemistry-climate models greatly underestimate the atmospheric burden of formic acid, because key processes related to its sources and sinks remain poorly understood2,6-9. Here we present atmospheric chamber experiments that show that formaldehyde is efficiently converted to gaseous formic acid via a multiphase pathway that involves its hydrated form, methanediol.…

Plague, caused by Yersinia pestis infection, continues to threaten low- and middle-income countries throughout the world. The complex interactions between rodents and fleas with their respective environments challenge our understanding of human plague epidemiology. Historical long-term datasets of reported plague cases offer a unique opportunity to elucidate the effects of climate on plague outbreaks in detail. Here, we analyse monthly plague deaths and climate data from 25 provinces in British India from 1898 to 1949 to generate insights into the influence of temperature, rainfall and humidit
