Differential Response and Recovery Dynamics of HSPC Populations Following Plasmodium chabaudi Infection.

Severe infections such as malaria are on the rise worldwide, driven by both climate change and increasing drug resistance. It is therefore paramount that we better understand how the host responds to severe infection. Hematopoiesis is particularly of interest in this context because hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) maintain the turnover of all blood cells, including all immune cells. Severe infections have been widely acknowledged to affect HSPCs; however, this disruption has been mainly studied during the acute phase, and the process and level of HSPC recovery remain understudi

The WHO Disease Outbreak News during the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) was an important public source of information - not only about the pandemic, but also thousands of other potential health emergencies. Here, we examine the 242 reports published in the WHO Disease Outbreak News (DON) during the first four years of the Covid-19 pandemic (2020 to 2023), and document the diseases and regions that were reported. We find that multinational epidemics of diseases like Ebola virus and MERS-CoV continue to dominate the DON. However, recent years have also seen more reports of climate-sensitive infectious

International digital trade and synergetic control of pollution and carbon emissions: Theory and evidence based on a nonlinear framework.

Amid the urgent global demand for emission reduction and climate change mitigation, the potential of digital trade (DTR) to synergetic control of pollution and carbon emissions (SCPCE) merits in-depth exploration. The study uses panel data from 93 countries between 2009 and 2021 and a nonlinear model to empirically analyze the impact of DTR on SCPCE. The results reveal a U-shaped relationship between DTR and SCPCE, indicating an initial suppressive effect followed by a subsequent positive impact. Interestingly, only high-income countries, robust-digital-infrastructure countries, and low-trade-

Construction of low-energy regenerative bagasse-based carbon capture material for high efficiency CO2 capture.

Using biomass for the production of low-energy regenerative carbon capture materials represents an effective strategy to advance carbon dioxide capture and storage technologies. In this study, a low-energy regenerative bagasse-based CO2 capture material is synthesized through a one-step, rapid crosslinking strategy. In this method, epichlorohydrin is used to crosslink bagasse with temperature sensitive Pluronic® F-127 and polyethyleneimine, thereby addressing the challenge of simultaneously incorporating multiple functional groups into the biomass matrix. The resulting material with abundant a

Carbon impact of orthognathic surgery.

Climate change is a threat to humankind that cannot be ignored and requires efforts to be made in every sector, including the health care industry. Operating rooms are understood to contribute significantly to emissions. The aim of this study was to assess the carbon footprint of orthognathic surgery in a regional specialized centre at the University Hospital of Lille (CHU Lille) in France. All consecutive patients who underwent orthognathic surgery between January 2 and July 2, 2024 were included retrospectively. A life cycle assessment (LCA) of orthognathic surgery was performed to estimate

Effects of Animal-Based and Plant-Based Nitrates and Nitrites on Human Health: Beyond Nitric Oxide Production.

Nitrate (NO3) and nitrite (NO2) are important nitrogen compounds that play a vital role in the nitrogen cycle, contributing to plant nutrition and broader ecological functions. Nitrates are produced from nitric acid (HNO3), while nitrites come from nitrous acid (HNO2). These substances are commonly found in the environment, especially in food and water, due to contamination from both human and natural sources. Human activities are major contributors to the high levels of nitrates found in water, leading to environmental pollution. Although nitrogen is crucial for plant growth, excessive fertil

Study of the effect of growth time and visible light intensity on the content of silymarin in milk thistle sprouts (Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertner) using spectroscopic methods.

The aim of this study was to develop a method for enhancing silymarin content in milk thistle sprouts, a plant widely used in the treatment of liver diseases. The process included several stages. The first stage involved evaluating the impact of light intensity on the silymarin content in edible milk thistle sprouts. The experiments were conducted under controlled conditions (in a climate chamber), with uniform germination parameters (temperature, humidity, duration) across samples, while varying light intensity levels -0 %, 25 % (2950 lux), 50 % (4960 lux), 75 % (6930 lux), and 100 % (7830 lu

FIGO committee opinion: Environmental drivers of obstetric health and early childhood development.

Environmental exposures are increasingly recognized as critical, yet underappreciated, determinants of reproductive, perinatal, and early childhood health. Developed through a structured consensus process and grounded in systematic evidence review, this FIGO committee opinion provides a comprehensive synthesis of the current evidence linking environmental toxicants-including air pollution, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, heavy metals, and climate-related stressors-to common obstetric outcomes such as preterm birth, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes, and impaired fetal g

Polyamines Interaction with Gaseous Signaling Molecules for Resilience Against Drought and Heat Stress in Plants.

Plants face a range of environmental stresses, such as heat and drought, that significantly reduce their growth, development, and yield. Plants have developed complex signaling networks to regulate physiological processes and improve their ability to withstand stress. The key regulators of plant stress responses include polyamines (PAs) and gaseous signaling molecules (GSM), such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), nitric oxide (NO), methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and ethylene (ET). The functions of PAs and GSM in stress perception, signal transduction, and stress-responsive

Transformation of water chemistry in the Stara River under climate and land use changes in the Carpathians.

The chemistry of the Stara River changes along its course due to both natural processes and human activities. Its chemical composition is influenced by tributary inflows, groundwater infiltration, and anthropogenic pollution. Particularly noticeable are sudden changes in the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, as well as Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions, indicating a strong impact of human activities, especially in agricultural and urbanized areas. Although no significant trends in total precipitation have been recorded, higher temperatures lead to increased evaporation, which results in high

Mn-promoted MoS2 catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation: enhanced methanol selectivity due to MoS2/MnOx interfaces.

Considering the alarming scenario of climate change, CO2 hydrogenation to methanol is considered a key process for phasing out fossil fuels by means of CO2 utilization. In this context, MoS2 catalysts have recently shown to be promising catalysts for this reaction, especially in the presence of abundant basal-plane sulfur vacancies and due to synergistic mechanisms with other phases. In this work, Mn-promoted MoS2 prepared by a hydrothermal method presents considerable selectivity for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol in comparison with pure MoS2 and other promoters such as K and Co. Interestingly

Elevated CO2 and goethite inhibited anaerobic oxidation of methane in paddy soils.

Microbially mediated anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) regulates methane (CH4) fluxes. Increases in the global atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration and iron oxide rich in paddy soils influence AOM. However, the response and mechanisms between these two processes and AOM remain unclear. Here, we investigated the coupling of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations (ambient CO2 + 200 ppm) and goethite with AOM via 13CH4 isotope tracer techniques and explored the dynamics of bacterial and archaeal communities by high-throughput sequencing. The coupling of 13CH4 with electron acceptors

Gold-iron oxide (Au/Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles as the nanoplatform for binding of bioactive molecules through self-assembly.

Nanomedicine plays a crucial role in the development of next-generation therapies. The use of nanoparticles as drug delivery platforms has become a major area of research in nanotechnology. To be effective, these nanoparticles must interact with desired drug molecules and release them at targeted sites. The design of these "nanoplatforms" typically includes a functional core, an organic coating with functional groups for drug binding, and the drugs or bioactive molecules themselves. However, by exploiting the coordination chemistry between organic molecules and transition metal centers, the se

Decoupling speciation and extinction reveals both abiotic and biotic drivers shaped 250 million years of diversity in crocodile-line archosaurs.

Whereas living representatives of Pseudosuchia, crocodylians, number fewer than 30 species, more than 700 pseudosuchian species are known from their 250-million-year fossil record, displaying far greater ecomorphological diversity than their extant counterparts. With a new time-calibrated tree of >500 species, we use a phylogenetic framework to reveal that pseudosuchian evolutionary history and diversification dynamics were directly shaped by the interplay of abiotic and biotic processes over hundreds of millions of years, supported by information theory analyses. Speciation, but not extinctio

A Novel Insect Overwintering Strategy: The Case of Mealybugs.

Insects have limited ability to regulate their body temperature and have thus required a range of strategies to withstand thermally stressful environments. Under unfavorable winter conditions, insects often take refuge under the soil surface to survive. Here, the mealybug insect family was selected for the study. Field experiments were performed in fruit orchards in eastern Spain. We used specifically designed floor sampling methods combined with fruit tree canopy pheromone traps. We found that in temperate climates, the large majority of the mealybugs move from the tree canopy to the roots du

Ontogenetic differences in mandibular morphology of two related macaque species and its adaptive implications.

Mandibular morphology is determined not only by dietary habits, but also by sexual selection and allometry in primates. It is well-known that African papionins show intra- and interspecific variations through varied extensions of a common ontogenetic allometric trajectory in the face. Here, we used geometric morphometrics to compare the ontogenetic trajectories of large-bodied Japanese macaques and small-bodied long-tailed macaques in the sister clade of African papionins. The two species showed a major common allometric trend that was comparable to that of African papionins, but the allometri

Lutzomyia longipalpis, Gone with the Wind and Other Variables.

Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) is the main vector of Leishmania infantum (Nicolle) in America, associated in turn with the current spread and urbanization of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL). The vector distribution in AVL foci shows a spatial-temporal clustering despite the different epidemiological contexts. The factors associated with the macroscale distribution of Lu. longipalpis as a landscape stratification are discussed in the framework of the process of their adaptation to anthropized environments. On the other hand, the fact that Lu. longipalpis is clustered in only a few h

Arctic snow pollution: A GC-HRMS case study of Franz Joseph Land archipelago.

Anthropogenic pollution of the Arctic atmosphere is of great interest due to the vulnerability of the Arctic ecosystems, as well as the processes of global transport and accumulation of atmospheric aerosols at high latitudes under conditions of cold climate. The present work throws light upon chemical composition of Arctic snow as a natural deposition matrix for atmospheric semi-volatile pollutants taken from the northernmost Arctic archipelago - Franz Josef Land, which is least affected by local sources of pollution and being a unique unstudied environmental object. The used methodology invol

Growth rate-dependent synthesis of halomethanes in marine heterotrophic bacteria and its implications for the ozone layer recovery.

Halomethanes (e.g., CH3 Cl, CH3 Br, CH3 I and CHBr3 ) are ozone-depleting compounds that, in contrast to the human-made chlorofluorocarbons, marine organisms synthesize naturally. Therefore, their production cannot be totally controlled by human action. However, identifying all their natural sources and understanding their synthesis regulation can help to predict their production rates and their impact on the future recovery of the Earth's ozone layer. Here we show that the synthesis of mono-halogenated halocarbons CH3 Cl, CH3 Br, and CH3 I is a generalized process in representatives of the ma

Biology, Ecology, and Evolving Management of Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in Sweet Corn in the United States.

The corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), is a polyphagous pest found throughout the United States, where it attacks many field and vegetable crops. Although H. zea has long been a traditional pest of sweet corn, its importance to this crop has increased dramatically over the past two decades. In this review, we summarize information critical for current and future management of H. zea in sweet corn production in the United States. First, we discuss the pest status of H. zea and its life history, including migration, infestation and larval development, diapause, overwintering, and abiotic fa
