Understanding how brain maturation unfolds in preterm neonates is critical for both neuroscience and clinical care. Structural MRI suggests that the frontal cortex develop late, yet EEG offers a direct window into functional activity that follows a different trajectory. We analysed 211 EEG recordings from 62 preterm neonates (25-40 weeks postmenstrual age, PMA) using convolutional neural networks trained on single channels to estimate functional brain age (FBA). We introduced the spatial difference in FBA (sd_FBA) metric, which quantifies the relative maturity of each channel compared with all

Natural vision is an active, predictive process guided by expectations about when and where information will appear. Yet how gaze is shaped in dynamic, multisensory environments remains poorly understood. Using immersive virtual reality with eye tracking, we examined gaze behavior during naturalistic navigation. Participants cycled through a virtual city while avatar cyclists, first heard overtaking them from behind via spatialized auditory cues, later became visible as they passed. Auditory cues triggered anticipatory gaze shifts to expected locations, indicating that gaze allocation was guid

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a portable, motion-tolerant neuroimaging method particularly well suited for developmental and naturalistic research. To evaluate the utility of fNIRS for studying individual differences and longitudinal changes, we measured activation and functional connectivity during a relational reasoning task in young adults (N = 73). We sought to (1) establish whether fNIRS captures frontoparietal activation patterns consistent with prior fMRI studies using similar paradigms, (2) assess the effect of the amount of data (number of task blocks) on signal str

Visual working memory (WM) enables the maintenance and manipulation of information no longer accessible in the world. Previous research has identified spatial WM representations in sustained activation patterns in visual, parietal, and frontal cortex, while MEG/EEG studies have additionally supported a role for "activity-silent" mechanisms revealed by transient reactivation or amplification of an existing representation by a task-irrelevant "ping" stimulus. In natural vision, the delay period between encoding information into WM and its use to guide behavior is rarely "empty," as is the case i

Radon is a naturally occurring gas that can accumulate to hazardous levels in homes. While previous work has shown that environmental toxicants negatively impact neurodevelopment, little is understood about how radon may affect critical cognitive functions like visuospatial attention, which is subserved by multispectral neural oscillatory dynamics across the developmentally-sensitive attention networks. This study explored the effects of chronic home radon exposure on the developmental trajectories of oscillatory dynamics serving visuospatial attention in youths. We recruited 118 youths aged 8

Household and neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) have consistently been associated with both brain structure and functional connectivity in adolescence. However, there is considerable heterogeneity in brain outcomes among youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, which suggests that other factors-including aspects of one's lifestyle-likely play a role by moderating these associations. In a large sample of ~10,000 early adolescents from the baseline assessment of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (aged 9-10 years), we tested whether sleep and participation in physical and non-ph

Curiosity scaffolds children's exploration and learning. Yet, the neural mechanisms of curiosity-modulated learning in children remain unclear. Here, we designed an fMRI task to test how curiosity, as defined by children's self-reported excitement about learning information, modulates memory and neural activity in 5- to 8-year-olds (n = 60 with behavioral data, n = 51 with fMRI). We observed greater learning when children reported more curiosity. In whole-brain analyses, high-curiosity was associated with greater activation in inferior frontal gyrus, lateral occipital cortex, the thalamus, and

Many people have experienced being so engrossed in an activity that they lost awareness of their surroundings, had difficulty stopping the activity, and found their perception of time condensed. This experience is known colloquially as hyperfocus. There is a small but quickly growing body of peer-reviewed research on hyperfocus. Most of this research is dependent upon self-report measures with little consideration given to the neurocognitive mechanisms responsible for hyperfocus. To advance hyperfocus research, this nascent field must move beyond self-report to uncover the neurocognitive mecha

The enjoyment of music involves a complex interplay between brain perceptual areas and the reward network. While previous studies have shown that musical liking is related to an enhancement of synchronization between the right temporal and frontal brain regions via theta frequency band oscillations, the underlying mechanisms of this interaction remain elusive. Specifically, a causal relationship between theta oscillations and musical pleasure has yet to be shown. In the present study, we address this question by using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). Twenty-four participant

While impulsivity is a prominent risk factor for adolescent suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB), impulsivity specifically following negative experiences shows more consistent associations. Individual differences in neural sensitivity to negative outcomes may explain why some impulsive adolescents develop STB while others do not. We examined whether neural reactivity to monetary loss moderates the relationship between impulsivity and future suicidal ideation (SI). Sixty-three adolescents (ages 13-18 at baseline; 59% female) with varying familial risk for psychopathology completed impulsivity

Prolonged cognitive imbalance, induced by directing attention to one visual field, can paradoxically enhance performance in the opposite, nonattended visual field. This effect is likely driven by the brain's homeostatic mechanisms that regulate excitation and inhibition between hemispheres in homotopic attention processing regions. Here, we employed transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) to modulate cortical excitability and probe its role in interhemispheric dynamics controlling visual attention. Specifically, we used a procedure called attentional isolation, where neurotypical particip

The attentional blink (AB) refers to impaired processing of a second target (T2) when presented 200-500 msec after a first target (T1) in a rapid serial visual presentation stream. There is converging evidence that alpha oscillations (8-12 Hz) may be critical for AB performance, as they can regulate attentional control and suppress distractor interference. This study investigated the effects of neuromodulation of alpha activities via transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on AB. Alpha tACS may either reduce the AB magnitude at intermediate lags by modulating inhibitory control (th

Learning to map number words onto their ordinal and quantitative meanings is critical in the acquisition of formal mathematics. Previous neuroimaging work in adults suggests that the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) represents verbal, symbolic number (i.e., number words) as well as non-verbal, non-symbolic numerosity (i.e., number of items in an array), but it is unclear when this overlap emerges in development. If regions that represent number words rely on representations of numerosity, then there should be functional overlap between number word and numerosity representations in the brain, even in

General cognitive ability in childhood has been linked to differences in brain structure and connectivity in numerous studies. However, longitudinal examinations of links between early cognitive ability and multimodal brain development are limited. Leveraging longitudinal data from 10,495 participants of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, we examined whether childhood cognitive ability was associated with differences in longitudinal development of gray and white matter structure and resting state functional connectivity (rsFC). Linear mixed-effects models tested associations bet

Refinement of large-scale functional networks during adolescence facilitates maturation of cognitive and affective functions vital to adult wellbeing, including working memory and emotion regulation. Understanding how functional connectivity (FC) subserves these abilities can offer valuable insight into typical neurodevelopment and brain-based markers of vulnerability to psychopathology. The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study includes a task designed to engage both working memory and affective processing: the Emotional N-back (EN-back). This study applied connectome-based pred

Language is often processed in perceptually challenging conditions. Although the neural correlates of speech processing in such conditions have been well studied, this is not the case for sign language. Thus, it is unknown whether the neural mechanisms involved in this process are comparable across language modalities. One reason for the lack of studies in sign language might be attributed to the difficulties in adapting perceptual manipulations from the context of speech to sign language. In the present study, we aim to address the gap in the literature by investigating whether the neural cor

Executive functions (EFs) are heritable higher‑order cognitive abilities, with a common factor (cEF) capturing shared variance across tasks. Whether early brain growth contributes to adult EF (and through which pathways) remains unclear. Using GWAS summary statistics, we applied linkage disequilibrium score regression, bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR), and multivariable MR to investigate the genetically predicted influence of infant head circumference (HC) on adult cEF and the mediating role of cortical morphology. Infant HC, but not birth HC, showed a significant positive

Early childhood poverty is associated with neurodevelopmental differences, but causal evidence linking income to brain development is sparse. In the present study, we examine whether four years of monthly unconditional cash transfers to mothers experiencing low income cause differences in their preschoolers' brain activity. Shortly after giving birth, mothers were randomized to receive $333/month or $20/month for the first several years of their child's life as a part of the Baby's First Years study. Here we report on the impact of these cash gifts on resting brain electric activity recorded a

Time is a central dimension of episodic memory which allows us to remember not only what happened and where from past events, but also when those events occurred and how they relate to one another. Adults can form hierarchical knowledge derived from episodic experience that includes precise timing details about individual events and information about temporal patterns that encode regularities across experiences, alongside factual knowledge about time (e.g., the months of the year). Young children's temporal memory is more constrained, lacking both the level of local detail and limited global k
