Dual Task Training Interventions and Mobility-Based Outcomes in Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Scoping Review.

PurposeChildren with cerebral palsy (CP) struggle in dual task (DT) situations, where interference may decrease performance when executing two simultaneous tasks. Dual task training (DTT) improves primary motor performance in individuals with typical development and neurological conditions, and emerging research also suggests benefits for DT performance. Its potential in children with CP, however, remains unexplored. This scoping review aims to (1) identify; (2) describe; and (3) synthesize the current evidence for DTT interventions in children with CP, and (4) evaluating its effects on mobili

The effects of different types of dual-task gait training on lower-limb coordination during dual-task gait in patients with stroke: a single-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Declined lower-limb coordination is one of the main factors to the increased risk of falls in patients with stroke. Dual-task gait training has been shown to be effective in improving lower-limb coordination during single-task walking. However, its efficacy in enhancing coordination during dual-task gait remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of cognitive dual-task gait training (CDTG) and motor dual-task gait training (MDTG) on lower-limb coordination during dual-task gait in patients with subacute stroke. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with subacute

Acute Effects of Sleep Extension on Fatigue, Inhibitory Control, Short-Term Vigilance and Neuromuscular Function in Youth Elite Ice Hockey Players: A Randomised Crossover Trial.

Sleep extension has previously been shown to acutely benefit athletic performance. However, studies investigating the effects of sleep extension on fatigue and cognitive performance are lacking. In this randomised crossover trial, 22 elite youth hockey players (17 ± 1 years; 1.83 ± 0.07 m; 82 ± 7 kg) took part in a 3-week protocol during the pre-season. The first week included two familiarisation sessions. During the second and third week of the protocol, athletes underwent a testing session before and after a night of normal sleep vs. sleep extension (10 h of time in bed). For each athlete, t

Predicting Continuous Cognitive Decline: The Generalizability of a Multimodal Machine Learning Approach Including Structural MRI and Non-Brain Data.

Aging is often accompanied by cognitive decline, but the extent, timing, and severity of this process is subject to large inter-individual variability. Predicting cognitive decline along a continuum, encompassing healthy age-related decline, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia, allows for more precise individual-level predictions. Previous work has demonstrated that machine learning (ML) models combining risk factors, clinical, neuropsychological, and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data can predict continuous cognitive decline. However, generalizability across independent data

Cognitive and motor abilities predict auditory-cued finger tapping in a dual task.

Rhythmic auditory stimulation, a therapeutic method involving repetitive movements cued by rhythmic sounds, can support movement (re-)learning and attentional orienting, but effects vary. While properties of cues have been extensively studied, not much is known about the impact of individual differences in cognitive and motor abilities that enable sensorimotor synchronization. This study examined how stimulus complexity (metronome/music) and cognitive and motor functions affect tapping timing consistency and force. Fifty healthy young adults (ages 18-39) performed several finger tapping tasks,

Reasoning training in veteran and civilian traumatic brain injury with persistent mild impairment.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a chronic health condition. The prevalence of TBI, combined with limited advances in protocols to mitigate persistent TBI-related impairments in higher order cognition, present a significant challenge. In this randomised study (n = 60), we compared the benefits of Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Training (SMART, n = 31), a strategy-based programme shown to improve cognitive control, versus an active learning programme called Brain Health Workshop (BHW, n = 29) in individuals with TBI with persistent mild functional deficits. Outcomes were measured on cogniti

Knee Arthroscopy: A Simulation Demonstrating the Imperial Knee Arthroscopy Cognitive Task Analysis (IKACTA) Tool.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality and cadaveric simulations are expensive and not readily accessible1. Innovative and accessible training adjuncts are required to help meet training needs. Cognitive task analysis (CTA) has been used extensively to train pilots and surgeons in other surgical specialties2-6. However, the use of CTA tools within orthopaedics is in its infancy. Arthroscopic procedures are minimally invasive and require a different skill set compared with open surgery. Residents often feel poorly prepared to perform this in the operating room because of the steep learning curve associate

Multi-study validation of data-driven disease progression models to characterize evolution of biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease.

Understanding the sequence of biological and clinical events along the course of Alzheimer's disease provides insights into dementia pathophysiology and can help participant selection in clinical trials. Our objective is to train two data-driven computational models for sequencing these events, the Event Based Model (EBM) and discriminative-EBM (DEBM), on the basis of well-characterized research data, then validate the trained models on subjects from clinical cohorts characterized by less-structured data-acquisition protocols. Seven independent data cohorts were considered totalling 2389 cogni
