The thymus is the seat of a diverse array of pathologic conditions given its embryologic roots. Multilocular thymic cysts, although well described, are uncommon, and one associated with rhabdomyomatous elements has not been described previously. A 15-year-old boy complained of sudden-onset chest pain of a month's duration, but was otherwise well. Chest radiographs localized the mass to the anterior mediastinum, arising from the thymus. A computed tomography scan demonstrated the lesion to be a multilocular fluid-containing cyst. A large, 15-cm cyst contiguous with the thymus was removed. Histo

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to check the ability of operative laparoscopy to help in the management of large ovarian cysts that may … st and peritoneal cavity was then done. In the case of an apparently benign cyst, aspiration of the cyst fluid was done after puncturing its wall, then the cyst was removed as usual.
RESULTS: In all of these cases, there was no laparoconversion and no other complications were recorded. Nine cases were mucinous and six were serous cystadenomas. The mean oper …

The introduction of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to the field of neuroimaging has allowed detection of various lesions that cause aqueductal stenosis. The authors report the case of a 3-year-old boy in whom a benign ventricular cyst developed in the aqueduct. The patient became drowsy after having complained of headache and vomiting; MR imaging revealed mild triventricular dilation and a normal-sized fourth ventricle. Repeated MR imaging performed 1 week later revealed an aqueductal cyst that had markedly enlarged during the intervening period. An external ventricular drainage system was in

Eight patients with neurocysticercosis were studied with CT and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Two cysts were shown better with MR than with CT. A conspicuous, high-intensity mural nodule containing the scolex allowed specific identification of intraventricular and parenchymal cysticerci. CT evidence of calcification and metrizamide enhancement in the nodule was also noted in one case. Racemose cysts were seen in the cerebellopontine angle and under the anterior septum pellucidum. Fluid in apparently live cysticerci and in racemose cysts had MR signal properties closely paralleling CSF. A th

Arachnoid cysts are relatively common and benign intraarachnoid membrane outpouchings containing CSF-like fluid. The majority of arachnoid cysts remain stable and asymptomatic and do not require intervention in the pediatric population. Here, the authors present the first reported case of an infected arachnoid cyst in a pediatric patient resulting in severe vasospasm of the left terminal internal carotid artery, left A1 segment, and left M1 branches with a left middle cerebral artery infarct. Their experience suggests that close monitoring is warranted for this condition and that the pediatric

Oral eruption cysts develop when extravasated fluid, epithelial remnants of tooth embryogenesis, and blood obliterates the submucosal space encapsulating an erupting primary or permanent tooth. In immunocompetent children, these lesions are treated conservatively with watchful monitoring for spontaneous rupture, mucosal healing, and timely tooth emergence. We describe the clinical course for 2 oral eruption cysts in a child with Stage III hepatoblastoma treated with chemotherapy before liver transplant. This article provides recommendations for care when prophylactic surgical excision of oral

There is reason to believe that clear parathyroid cysts are a separate pathologic entity distinct from degenerative cystic tumors of the parathyroid. They probably derive from enlargement of vestigial tubules or canals associated with parathyroid embryogenesis and they are rarely, if ever, hyperfunctioning. Indeed, if a clear parathyroid cyst is encountered in the clinical setting of primary hyperparathyroidism, then it is important to exclude a concomitant tumor in one of the other parathyroid gland, as in the case presented here. If the ionized serum calcium level is normal then clear parath

CA-125 is abundantly secreted from ovarian endometriotic cysts, but is not specific to endometriosis. In order to develop a new, more specific diagnostic marker for endometriosis, the iron concentrations in various ovarian cysts were assayed. The ovarian cysts were punctured and the contents aspirated laparoscopically, laparotomically, or transvaginally. The iron concentration in the ovarian cystic fluid was assayed using a spectrophotometer after protein precipitations and chromogen treatment. The iron concentrations in ovarian cysts were 69.5+/-10.4 micromol/l in serous cystadenomas, 73.5+/-

Five cases are presented with a strained voice quality due to a unique underlying cause: thyroid cartilage cysts. Laryngoscopy and radiological images show antero-medial displacement of both vestibular and vocal fold(s). Swelling in the ala of the thyroid cartilage results in a pear-shaped lumen. These cysts were marsupialized with CO2 laser, fluid emerged, and histological biopsies confirmed cartilaginous cysts. Postoperatively, all cases report largely reduced or completely resolved vocal complaints, with a consistent follow-up of 2 years. Together with previous publications, an overview of

Discal cysts are a rare cause of lumbar radiculopathy. There are only a few reports of this disease in medical literature. The authors describe the case of a 40-year-old man with a lumbar discal cyst that led to radiculopathy. An intraspinal extradural cystic mass was responsible for low and high signal intensities observed in lumbar lesions on T1 and T2 weighted magnetic resonance images. This cyst was a grossly spherical mass with clear serous fluid, which was connected to an adjacent intervertebral disc. Histopathology of the cystic walls revealed fibrous connective tissues without specific

Cysts of Rathke's cleft are considered as benign lesions, a practically permanent cure of which can be achieved by aspiration of the fluid content and ample opening of the capsule. The case of a patient who suffered from a recurrence of the cyst, 13 years after a first operation carried out according to such surgical criteria, is reported in order to signal the actual possibility of recurrence of such lesions.

Hepatic cysts are fluid-filled lesions in the liver that are estimated to occur in 5% of the population. They may cause hepatomegaly and abdominal pain. Progression to secondary fibrosis, cirrhosis, or cholangiocarcinoma can lead to morbidity and mortality. Previous studies of patients and rodent models have associated hepatic cyst formation with increased proliferation and fluid secretion in cholangiocytes, which are partially due to impaired primary cilia. Congenital hepatic cysts are thought to originate from faulty bile duct development, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understo

We have investigated the morphological and structural aspects of hydatid cysts recovered from sheep raised in southern Sardinia during two surveys conducted over the 20 years since the last control attempt at the end of the 1980s. In the first study carried out during 1995-1997, a few years after the last control attempt, a total of 10,334 cysts were examined, recovered from 1029 infected sheep out of a total of 1375 inspected (prevalence 74.84%). In the second survey, conducted ten years later during the period 2005-2010 in the absence of specific control measures, a total of 6249 cysts were

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) represent a mesenchymal neoplasm arising from the interstitial cells of cajal occurring mainly in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, we present a case of a large GIST arising from the jejunum with cystic presentation unlike the usual presentation as a solid mass. A 50-year-old male patient came with complaint of a painless mobile lump in abdomen of approximately 25 cm in size which had gradually increased over two years. Clinically mesenteric cyst was suspected. Intra-operatively the mass was a 30x25 cm cyst with approximately 2500 ml serous fluid presen

We report here the case of a suprasellar cystic germ cell tumor (GCT) initially diagnosed as an arachnoid cyst. A 10-year-old boy experienced headache, dizziness, and diplopia, and was shown to have an approximately 2 cm suprasellar cyst. Two months after endoscopic third ventriculostomy was performed, a 5-6 cm cystic mass with an internal enhancing component was observed in the suprasellar cistern. Serum human chorionic gonadotropin levels were slightly increased in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (55 and 162 IU/L, respectively) but were strikingly elevated in the cystic fluid (14,040 IU/L)

PURPOSE: Epididymal cysts are benign structures commonly seen during urological or ultrasound testicular examinations. They are treated only if symptomatic. Surgery is the standard treatment, although it carries a high risk of complications. We report our experience with sclerotherapy of epididymal cysts with sonographic assistance, and present an analysis of costs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 1999 and December 2000 we examined 48 epididymal cysts in 45 patients during ultrasound examinations. Except one, all of the patients were symptomatic. We decided to treat 25 symptomatic cyst

INTRODUCTION: Accurate preoperative evaluation of pancreatic cysts is essential. However, cytology and biochemical analysis are often limited by low cellularity, and risk stratification is critical for management. PancreaSeq Genomic Classifier (GC) analyzes cyst fluid for molecular alterations to aid diagnosis and risk assessment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 219 pancreatic cysts from 206 patients using PancreaSeq GC, integrating molecular findings with cytology, biochemical, imaging, surgical pathology, and follow-up.
RESULTS: PancreaSeq GC successfully analyzed 216/21…

Background: Branchial cleft cysts or fistulae are common in pediatric surgical pathology and are cured by surgery. Lesions in this area may not show the classical features of a cyst or duct lined by squamous or respiratory epithelium and other differential diagnoses should be considered. Case report: A seven-year-old otherwise healthy boy presented with bilateral swelling of the lower neck and reported intermittent secretion of clear fluid on the right side. Excision of the right sided lesion revealed an ectopic salivary gland, the excision of the left showed only subtle fibrosis. Conclusion:

A case of precocious puberty in a 7-year-old boy with a tumor of the pineal region is reported. Human chorionic gonadotropin levels were elevated in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Endocrinological evaluation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis demonstrated a normal prepubertal response. The tumor was resected and proved to be an immature teratoma. Human chorionic gonadotropin levels were markedly elevated in the tumor cyst fluid. Sexual precocity regressed and human chorionic gonadotropin levels in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid fell to normal after surgery, suggesting that the precociou…
