Low bladder capacity is an important predictor for comorbidity of interstitial cystitis with Hunner's lesion in patients with refractory chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the predictive factors for comorbidity of Hunner-type interstitial cystitis in patients with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome using urethrocystoscopy. METHODS: Thirty-two male patients were included in this study. Between April 2012 and April 2016; they were diagnosed with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome according to the National Institutes of Health classification. Their symptoms were not improved by 3 months of behavioral and pharmacological therapies. They all underwent narrow band imaging-assisted urethrocystoscopy to assess whether

The role of a leaky epithelium and potassium in the generation of bladder symptoms in interstitial cystitis/overactive bladder, urethral syndrome, prostatitis and gynaecological chronic pelvic pain.

The traditional diagnosis of interstitial cystitis (IC) only recognizes the severe form of the disease. The far more common early and intermittent phases of the disease are not perceived to be part of IC but rather are misdiagnosed as urinary tract infection, urethral syndrome, overactive bladder, chronic prostatitis, urethritis, or a type of gynecologic pelvic pain (such as endometriosis, vulvodynia, or some type of vaginitis). All of these patient groups actually suffer from the same bladder disease. This disease results from a leaky bladder epithelium and subsequent potassium leakage into t

Genome-based expression profiles as a single standardized microarray platform for the diagnosis of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis: an array of 139 genes model.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The aim of the study was to investigate the molecular signatures underlying bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) using cDNA microarray. METHODS: Microarray gene expression profiles were [corrected] studied in a matched case-control study [corrected] by using a system of conditional regression modeling. RESULTS: The main [corrected] findings are summarized as follows: Firstly, a "139-gene" model was discovered to contain high expressions of bladder epithelium, which feature in BPS/IC. Secondly, complex metabolic reactions, including carbohydrate, l

The efficacy and safety of intravesical platelet-rich plasma injections into the bladder for the treatment of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is a chronic bladder condition with a rising incidence that significantly impacts the lives of millions worldwide. The lack of understanding regarding the pathophysiology of this condition has resulted in a deficiency of effective treatment options. However, the development of regenerative medicine has brought platelet-rich plasma into our field of vision. Platelet-rich plasma may address unresolved inflammation in the interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome bladder and facilitate the restoration of bladder and urethral barrier func

Intravesical Instillation of Hyaluronic Acid With Epidermal Growth Factor for Restoring Urothelial Denudation and Alleviating Oxidative Stress in Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Interstitial Cystitis of Rats.

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy of an intravesical instillation of hyaluronic acid (HA) combined with epidermal growth factor (EGF) for the treatment of interstitial cystitis (IC) using a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced IC animal model. METHODS: A total of 24 female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to 4 groups: sham control, IC, HA, and treatment (HA/ EGF) groups. A polyethylene-50 tube was placed inside the bladder of each animal. IC was induced by twice-weekly instillations of LPS for 3 weeks, which resulted in chronic injury of the urothelium. Animals in the sham control group onl

Increased brain gray matter in the primary somatosensory cortex is associated with increased pain and mood disturbance in patients with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome.

PURPOSE: Interstitial cystitis is a highly prevalent pain condition estimated to affect 3% to 6% of women in the United States. Emerging data suggest there are central neurobiological components to the etiology of this disease. We report the first brain structural imaging findings from the MAPP network with data on more than 300 participants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used voxel based morphometry to determine whether human patients with chronic interstitial cystitis display changes in brain morphology compared to healthy controls. A total of 33 female patients with interstitial cystitis witho

Potassium sensitivity test (PST) as a measurement of treatment efficacy of painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis: a prospective study with cyclosporine A and pentosan polysulfate sodium.

AIMS: Potassium sensitivity test (PST) has been used as an optional tool in diagnosing painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis (PBS/IC). The role of PST in the follow-up of patients with PBS/IC is elusive. We performed PST before and after treatment of PBS/IC with cyclosporine A (CyA) or pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS), to test whether the result of repeated PST correlates with alleviation of PBS/IC-related symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-four patients who participated in a randomized clinical study comparing CyA and PPS in the treatment of PBS/IC were recruited to the present
