Cost-effectiveness of partially-hydrolyzed formula for prevention of atopic dermatitis in Australia.

OBJECTIVE: To perform an economic evaluation of a specific brand of partially hydrolyzed infant formula (PHF-W) in the prevention of atopic dermatitis (AD) among Australian infants. METHODS: A cost-effectiveness analysis was undertaken from the perspectives of the Department of Health and Aging (DHA), of the family of the affected subject and of society as a whole in Australia, based on a decision-analytic model following a hypothetical representative cohort of Australian newborns who are not exclusively breastfed and who have a familial history of allergic disease (i.e., are deemed 'at risk'

Antipruritic hydrogel for the treatment of atopic dermatitis: an open-label pilot study.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease in industrialized nations. The efficacy and tolerability of Atrapro (RD047-26) antipruritic hydrogel was evaluated in 17 adult participants with mild to moderate AD with associated pruritus. The antipruritic hydrogel was applied 3 times daily to the affected areas of the body, and participants were evaluated on days 3, 7, and 14 (end of study). There were 3 efficacy end points: investigator global assessment (IGA), investigator pruritus assessment (IPA), and participant itch assessment (PIA). All 3 efficacy end points

An association of TLR2–16934A >T polymorphism and severity/phenotype of atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Toll-like receptor 2 gene (TLR2) –16934A>T polymorphism has been shown to be associated with severity of atopic dermatitis (AD) as measured using severity scoring of atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) index. Moreover, TLR2–16934A>T polymorphism has been associated with atopy and allergic disorders in farmers’ children. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate an association between TLR2–16934A>T polymorphism and AD phenotype, including disease severity and concomitant atopic diseases, or potential serum markers of AD severity and also to find a molecular background of the clinical

SCORAD 75: a new metric for assessing treatment outcomes in atopic dermatitis.

OBJECTIVE: The scoring atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) is a well-established severity-scoring tool for atopic dermatitis (AD). Dead Sea climatotherapy (DSC) is a natural selective balneo-phototherapy utilized for many years to treat severe AD. The study's goal was to evaluate the impact of DSC on AD patients through assessment of SCORAD scores and to identify parameters associated with greater improvement. METHODS: The files of 78 European patients (37 male patients and 41 female patients, mean age 37.8 years) with AD undergoing DSC were included in this retrospective study. Three sub-groups were

Synergetic effects of prednisolone and olopatadine on atopic dermatitis model of hairless mice.

We investigated the synergetic effects of glucocorticoid and histamine H1 receptor antagonists on an atopic dermatitis model. Hairless mice were used in this study and an atopic dermatitis model was made by repeated application of 2,4,6-trinitrochlorobenzene. The effects of glucocorticoid, histamine H1 receptor antagonists, and the simultaneous use of these drugs were investigated by measuring scratching behavior, skin symptoms and nerve growth factor (NGF) in the skin. Topical application of prednisolone significantly inhibited scratching behavior, skin symptoms and NGF contents in the skin b

Maintenance of an acidic stratum corneum prevents emergence of murine atopic dermatitis.

Neutralization of stratum corneum (SC) adversely impacts key epidermal functions, including permeability barrier homeostasis and SC integrity. Conversely, acidification of SC improves these functions in developmentally impaired (neonatal or aged) skin, and enhances function in normal skin. Hence, we hypothesized that acidification could alter the course of inflammatory dermatoses, which invariably exhibit an increased SC pH. Maintenance of a low pH by topical applications of the polyhydroxyl acid, lactobionic acid, during the repeated-challenge phase inhibited the development of oxazolone-indu

Effectiveness of a multidisciplinary itch-coping training programme in adults with atopic dermatitis.

The short- and longer-term effectiveness of a brief, multidisciplinary itch-coping group training scheme in adults with atopic dermatitis was evaluated. Clinical severity scores (Eczema Area and Severity Index) and validated self-report measures were obtained in a waiting-list control condition (n=30) and a treatment condition (n=61) at pre- and post-treatment and in the treatment condition at 3- and 12-month follow-ups. Relative to the control condition, all post-treatment measures showed improvements in terms of enhanced skin status, reduced itching and scratching and improved itch-coping pa

House dust mites on skin, clothes, and bedding of atopic dermatitis patients.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis is a common allergic condition in children, often associated with a positive skin reaction to house dust mite allergens. AIM: To determine the presence of house dust mites on the skin, clothes, and bedding of patients with atopic dermatitis. METHODS: Nineteen patients with atopic dermatitis were examined during a 2-year period. Samples from affected and healthy skin surfaces were obtained with adhesive tape, and dust samples from bedding and clothes were collected with a vacuum cleaner at the start of the study and 3-6 weeks later, and examined for the presence

Lichenoid and other clinical presentations of atopic dermatitis in an inner city practice.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) has many different clinical presentations. In our inner city practice, we have observed a variant of AD in our heavily pigmented patients that we have termed lichen planus-like atopic dermatitis because of its clinical similarity to lichen planus. Clinically, this variant may be distinguished by the presence on extensor surfaces and a more rapid response to treatment. Histologically, in lichen planus-like AD, a spongiotic dermatitis is present; further, there is no lichenoid dermatitis evident. We compare this presentation with the others seen over an eight-month interva

Griscelli syndrome: a case report of Reye's syndrome and atopic dermatitis history.

Griscelli syndrome (GS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that results in pigmentary dilution of the skin and the hair (silver hair), with the presence of large clumps of pigment in hair shafts, and an accumulation of melanosomes in melanocytes. Sixty cases of GS have been reported in the literature, but we could find no description of its oro-dental symptoms. Reye's syndrome (RS) is characterized by acute noninflammatory encephalopathy and renal and hepatic failure, while atopic dermatitis (AD) is a skin disorder with an immunologic basis. The aim of this paper is to describe the oro-den

Neuroendocrine and circadian aspects (melatonin and beta-endorphin) of atopic dermatitis in the child.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a disease of increasing incidence among paediatric patients. Among the factors involved in its pathogenesis is the alteration of the immune response, and so the objective of this study was to evaluate the involvement of certain neuroendocrine factors with immune properties in the development of the disease. Fifty-five subjects were selected and divided into the following three groups: healthy subjects, those diagnosed with symptomatic AD and those with asymptomatic AD. Plasma levels of melatonin and beta-endorphins were measured by radioimmunoassay, in serum samples o

On the role of the epidermal differentiation complex in ichthyosis vulgaris, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

Undisturbed epidermal differentiation is crucial for an intact skin barrier function. The epidermal differentiation complex (EDC) is a cluster of genes on chromosome 1q21 encoding proteins that fulfil important functions in terminal differentiation in the human epidermis, including filaggrin, loricrin, S100 proteins and others. Recently, evidence emerged that variation within EDC genes plays an important role in the pathogenesis of three common skin disorders, ichthyosis vulgaris, atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis. Two loss-of-function mutations in the filaggrin (FLG) gene, R501X and 2282de

Breaking the (un)sound barrier: filaggrin is a major gene for atopic dermatitis.

We have recently shown that loss-of-function mutations in the filaggrin gene, carried by about 10% of people of European ethnicity, cause ichthyosis vulgaris and are strong predisposing factors for atopic dermatitis and asthma secondary to atopic dermatitis. These results demonstrate a prominent role for the epidermal barrier in atopic disease and have important implications for the study of complex traits.

Tacrolimus ointment: the treatment of atopic dermatitis and other inflammatory cutaneous disease.

Topical tacrolimus (FK506, Protopic) has been developed and marketed for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). Tacrolimus works as an inhibitor of calcineurin, which creates a downregulation of the inflammatory cascade. Numerous trials have shown the efficacy and safety of tacrolimus in treating AD in both adults and children. Additionally, comparison data with other medications commonly used for AD, such as topical steroids and pimecrolimus, show improved efficacy of tacrolimus. A comprehensive review of the off-label uses of tacrolimus in other dermatoses, including psoriasis, lichen plan

The importance of disinfection therapy using povidone-iodine solution in atopic dermatitis.

The combination of the local disinfection therapy against Staphylococcus aureus with the conventional therapy for atopic dermatitis has been widely used, and the improvement in skin lesions has been reported to be associated with a remarkable decrease in IgE levels and reagin antibody titers. We have already reported that affected organs were not only the skin but also the gastrointestinal tract in a case with atopic dermatitis. In the present study, the duodenal tissues were examined by biopsy in 32 patients with atopic dermatitis, and mild or chronic duodenitis was observed in all samples. T
