Atopic dermatitis is a chronic form of allergic contact dermatitis that is closely associated with a compromised epidermal barrier. Immunogenicity of a given electrophilic hapten after penetration of this barrier depends directly on biochemical reactions in the thiol-rich layer in the stratum granulosum. In response to electrophilic hapten, NF-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) in keratinocytes efficiently induces the production of antioxidants. In this study, we show that the immunogenicity of a given hapten depends directly on the extent to which it induces antioxidant host defenses within

PURPOSE: To identify the histopathologic changes in the lens capsule of eyes with in-the-bag intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation.
DESIGN: Pathological analysis and correlation with clinical findings.
SETTING: Hayashi Eye Hospital (Fukuoka, Japan).
METHODS: Specimens of twenty-five IOL-lens capsule complexes obtained during surgery were processed for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Backscattered electron images of cross-sections of the lens capsule were obtained using SEM. Ultrastructural changes in the lens capsule were examined and analyzed based on preoperative clinical findings.

We report a 52-year-old man who presented with erythroderma and nodular lesions on face manifesting as "Leonine facies". He had impaired sensation over the face and was initially diagnosed to have lepromatous leprosy and was treated with antileprosy drugs. Investigations showed a total Leukocyte count of 550 X 109/l with 90% atypical lymphoid cells with prominent central nucleolus suggestive of prolymphocytes. On flow cytometry, these cells were positive for cytoplasmic CD3, CD2, CD5, CD7, CD4, and CD38 (dim) and were negative for CD1a and TdT and diagnosis of T-prolymphocytic leukemia was mad

Paraneoplastic disorders are manifestations of internal malignancies without the direct action of the tumor. Its pathogenesis involves production of substances that interfere with cellular activity of distant tissues. Paraneoplasias may be the first sign of cancer, and clinicians should be familiarized with its manifestations in order to perform an early diagnosis of the underlying neoplasm. The aim of this review was to describe most common paraneoplastic skin diseases.

A 74-year-old Japanese male had developed generalized erythroderma and rapid growth of multiple verrucous lesions over the entire surface of his face, trunk, and extremities three months before he was seen. Histologically seborrheic keratoses were revealed. Laboratory examinations showed peripheral leukocytosis with atypical lymphocytes and high levels of IgE and IgG. On the basis of these clinical and histopathologic findings, we diagnosed the patient as having Leser-Trélat sign associated with Sézary syndrome. The erythroderma subsided after administration of oral predonisone, and no new for

Spindle cell squamous carcinoma (SCSC) of the left hand arising in a patient with long-standing erythroderma is reported. Histopathologically, spindle shaped atypical cells were observed neighboring the cells of well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. These two types of tumor cells, spindle cells and well differentiated cells, were present side by side and merged into each other. The erythroderma had been present for over 20 years, and both clinical and histopathological findings suggested cutaneous T cell lymphoma, but were not diagnostic for mycosis fungoides, Sézary syndrome, or adult

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) comprises a spectrum of presentations, including erythroderma, pruritus, lymphadenopathy, and circulating atypical lymphocytes. Photopheresis is an extracorporeal treatment in which white blood cell concentrates are subjected to UV irradiation when the serum methoxypsoralen level is above 50 ng/mL. Of patients with CTCL, those with erythroderma have been most responsive to this therapy. In some conditions, including certain malignant hematologic neoplasms, serum soluble interleukin 2 receptor levels (SIL2R) correlate with disease activity. We sought

Postoperative erythroderma is a rare disease of which the clinical course is almost always fatal. It is characterized by fever, skin rash, hepatic dysfunction and leukopenia, and many of the cases occur after cardiovascular surgery. We have experienced two cases of this disease which are suspected to be related to a large amount of blood transfusion. In the second case, we observed genetical mismatch of the HLA typing between the patient and his family members. This observation strongly suggests the possibility that postoperative erythroderma is a form of graft-versus-host (GVH) reaction induc

Although Sézary cells are not specific for the Sézary syndrome, the enumeration of these circulating abnormal lymphoid cells is important in the evaluation of patients with mycosis fungoides, Sézary syndrome, and benign dermatoses that might be confused with these entities. Various techniques have been developed for this purpose, but none of the techniques have been widely accepted as practical and accurate. We describe a new method of preparing blood specimens for the identification and enumeration of circulating Sézary cells. Peripheral blood was separated on a density gradient and the monon
