PURPOSE: Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and stratum corneum hydration (SCH) are commonly used to assess epidermal barrier hydration. We investigated the associations of TEWL and SCH levels in newborns and the incidence of atopic dermatitis (AD) within the first 3 months of age.
METHODS: We measured SCH and TEWL levels on the cheeks of 330 healthy full-term Vietnamese newborns within 48 hours after birth using a GPSkin Barrier Pro® device (GPOWER Inc., Korea). Subsequently, 233 newborns completed the follow-up via telephone calls over a period of 3 months. Any cases of AD and other skin diso

Skin diseases in the vulvar area include a variety of disorders many of which have a chronic course with significant morbidity. It is important to be aware of the symptoms, signs and diagnostic tools in order to optimise treatment. Herein, the most common eczematous diseases of the vulvar area, i.e. lichen simplex chronicus, seborrhoeic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, and non-systemic and systemic allergic contact dermatitis are reviewed. Allergic contact urticaria is also described.

This study was performed to evaluate eyelid dermatitis in a group of patients of our Allergy Unit between January 1990 and April 1991. Among the 1158 patients seen during this period, 150 had eyelid dermatitis: 135 females and 15 males, with a mean age of 35 years. Of the 150 patients with eyelid dermatitis, 54 had eczema localized to the eyelids only, 49 to the eyelids and face, 19 to the eyelids and hands, and 28 to the eyelids and other sites. 98 patients (65.3%) were diagnosed as having allergic contact dermatitis, 25 (16.6%) irritant contact dermatitis, 21 (14%) atopic dermatitis, and 6 (

Atopic dermatitis (AD), also known as eczema, is a chronic skin condition, affecting all ages, characterized by inflammation, itching, dryness, and redness, which can severely impact quality of life. Based on clinical features and symptoms, AD is of several types like contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, neurodermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, stasis dermatitis, and nummular eczema. Its pathophysiology involves genetic, environmental, and immunological factors, leading to skin barrier dysfunction. Current treatments for AD involve a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological str…

BACKGROUND: As the search for reliable clinical indicators for management of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in resource-poor settings continues, mucocutaneous disorders of HIV should be considered among key clinical indicators for prediction of underlying immune status, disease progression, and possible complications of highly active antiretroviral therapy in Africa.
OBJECTIVE: To identify and correlate mucocutaneous disorders to CD4-positive cell count and total lymphocyte count in HIV/AIDS patients of southeast Nigeria.
METHODOLOGY: Data were col

Kerion is an abscess caused by a fungal infection, commonly occurring on the scalp among children and rarely in adults. This report illustrates the case of a 12-year-old boy who presented with multiple plaques with crusty lesions on the scalp for 2 months, associated with purulent discharge and boggy swelling, initially misdiagnosed as seborrheic dermatitis. Following unsuccessful treatment, his condition was correctly diagnosed as kerion based on clinical appearance, history of contact with domestic animals and Wood's lamp examination findings. The diagnosis was delayed for 2 months, leading

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is an inflammatory skin disorder in which colonies of Malassezia furfur have been found in affected areas.
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of itraconazole in the treatment of severe SD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Itraconazole was given to 30 patients of SD in a dose of 100 mg twice daily for 1 week followed by 200 mg/day for first 2 days of the following 2 months. The response was noted on day 15, 30, 60, and 90. The clinical response was graded as markedly effective, effective, or ineffective.
RESULTS: Clinical improvement (evaluat

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis (SD) is a common inflammatory skin disease that presents as itchy, flaking skin in the seborrhoeic areas. Various environmental and intrinsic factors have been identified as predisposing factors for SD, but its aetiology remains poorly understood. Although it was recognized that genetic factors play a role in SD aetiology, there have not been studies that systematically review the literature specifically for causal mutations or protein deficiencies in SD. In this review, we searched various databases for gene mutations and protein deficiencies that cause SD or SD-like ph

The skin of the scalp differs from the skin on the other areas of the body because of a higher density of hair follicles and higher sebum production. These, together with the presence of hair, provide a suitable environment for superficial infections, infestations and inflammatory diseases. The good condition of the scalp has a significant impact on the patient's mental well-being and social interaction. The visibility of this part of the skin and the presence of hair itself restrict the range of possible therapeutic agents that can be used due to the complicated application and poor cosmetic

Dandruff is characterized by a flaky, pruritic scalp and affects up to half the world's population post-puberty. The aetiology of dandruff is multifactorial, influenced by Malassezia, sebum production and individual susceptibility. The commensal yeast Malassezia is a strong contributory factor to dandruff formation, but the presence of Malassezia on healthy scalps indicates that Malassezia alone is not a sufficient cause. A healthy stratum corneum (SC) forms a protective barrier to prevent water loss and maintain hydration of the scalp. It also protects against external insults such as microor

Seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disorder, affecting areas of the head and body where sebaceous glands are most prominent and active. The disorder commonly affects hair-bearing areas of the head, including the scalp. Involvement on the face is usually limited to the hairline, eyebrows, nasolabial folds and ears, and may occur either with or without scalp involvement. Areas of the trunk where SD may occur include the body folds and the presternal area. The aetiology of SD is unknown, although hormones and the Malassezia spp., formerly known as Pityrosporum (naturally

Thirty patients with dysseborrhoeic dermatitis (DD) of the scalp, 27 men and 3 women, were treated with 2% ketokonazole gel prepared in the Institute of Pharmacy of the M.M.A. Therapeutical effects was assessed on the basis of the objective clinical signs (erythema, desquamation) and subjective feeling of itching. Four weeks after the beginning of treatment the complete therapeutic response was obtained in 80% of patients (withdrawal of all clinical signs and subjective symptoms), good response was achieved in 16.6% and satisfying in 3.33% of patients. In no patients the preparation was withou

In seborrhoeic dermatitis an inflammatory response occurs secondary to large numbers of Pityrosporum yeasts appearing within and beneath the epidermis. To study the interaction between human neutrophils and P. ovale and any immunomodulating effect of antifungal agents, the yeast was exposed to ketoconazole and then incorporated into neutrophil monolayer assays. Phagocytosis was complement dependent and reached a maximum after 40 min. Ketoconazole at 25, 50 and 100 mg l-1 had no significant effect on phagocytosis of P. ovale. However, when yeast cells were pretreated with ketoconazole for 2 h b
