BACKGROUND: High levels of lead, up to 3.3 mg/kg fresh weight, were detected in pig liver in Western Australia at the beginning of 2008. This followed the detection of lead at above the maximum level (ML) in a pig liver through the National Residue Survey (NRS). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of patient immunotherapy records from January 2000-June 2006.
SETTING: Tertiary care outpatient otolaryngology clinic.
RESULTS: Two hundred seventy-two patients were given 26,795 injections (average of 98.5 injections per patient). Contamination of propofol, in an emulsion formulation, has been associated with infective complications. Local anaesthetics,some of which are known to have antibacterial properties, are frequently added to the solution to reduce pain on injection. We examined the growth rates of E. coli, S. aureus, S. epidermidis and P. aeruginosa in propofol with and without lignocaine 0.1%-2% after incubation for 2, 5 and 24 hours at 37 degrees C.
