Parents' perceptions on speech therapy delivery models in children with a cleft palate: A mixed methods study.

PURPOSE: This study investigated parents' perceptions on two different speech therapy delivery models in children with a CP ± L, namely an innovative high intensity speech intervention (i.e. HISI: 10 1-h sessions divided over 2 weeks) and a low intensity speech intervention (i.e. LISI: 10 1-h sessions divided over 10 weeks). METHOD: Twelve parents of 12 children who received HISI (n = 6) or LISI (n = 6) were contacted with the request to participate to this study to review their opinion on the received therapy. Participation included the completion of a questionnaire containing items related

The systemizing quotient: an investigation of adults with Asperger syndrome or high-functioning autism, and normal sex differences.

Systemizing is the drive to analyse systems or construct systems. A recent model of psychological sex differences suggests that this is a major dimension in which the sexes differ, with males being more drawn to systemize than females. Currently, there are no self-report measures to assess this important dimension. A second major dimension of sex differences is empathizing (the drive to identify mental states and respond to these with an appropriate emotion). Previous studies find females score higher on empathy measures. We report a new self-report questionnaire, the Systemizing Quotient (SQ)

Continuity and change in the social competence of children with autism, Down syndrome, and developmental delays.

The aims of this longitudinal study were: (1) to assess the continuity and change in diagnosis, intelligence, and language skills in children with autism, Down syndrome, and other developmental delays, (2) to specify the deficits in social competence and language skills in these children, and (3) to identify precursors in the preschool period of gains in language skills and of peer engagement in the mid-school years. The initial sample consisted of 70 children with autism, 93 children with Down syndrome, 59 children with developmental delays, and 108 typically developing children, with the fir

The Role of Interpreters in Supporting Resilience and Implications for Artificial Intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Interpreters help millions of patients with a non-English language preference (NELP) navigate the healthcare system. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are rapidly improving and undergoing testing and implementation for interpretation purposes. However, little is understood about interpreters' roles beyond direct interpretation, such as how they may promote resilience, which supports patient safety. Understanding these additional roles is critical as AI tools expand in interpretation. OBJECTIVE: To understand how medical interpreters enhance resilience in the care of patients with

Eyes ahead: a scoping review of technologies enabling humanoid robots to follow human gaze.

Gaze is a fundamental aspect of non-verbal communication in human interaction, playing an important role in conveying attention, intentions, and emotions. A key concept in gaze-based human interaction is joint attention, the focus of two individuals on an object in a shared environment. In the context of human-robot interaction (HRI), gaze-following has become a growing research area, as it enables robots to appear more socially intelligent, engaging, and likable. While various technical approaches have been developed to achieve this capability, a comprehensive overview of existing implementat

Multimodal explainable AI predicts upcoming speech behavior in adults who stutter.

A key goal of cognitive neuroscience is to better understand how dynamic brain activity relates to behavior. Such dynamics, in terms of spatial and temporal patterns of brain activity, are directly measured with neurophysiological methods such as EEG, but can also be indirectly expressed by the body. Autonomic nervous system activity is the best-known example, but, muscles in the eyes and face can also index brain activity. Mostly parallel lines of artificial intelligence research show that EEG and facial muscles both encode information about emotion, pain, attention, and social interactions,

Impact of Attention Training on Academic Achievement, Executive Functioning, and Behavior: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience significant difficulties in attention, learning, executive functions, and behavioral regulation. Emerging evidence suggests that computerized cognitive training may remediate these impairments. In a double blind controlled trial, 76 children with IDD (4-11 years) were randomized to either an attention training (n = 38) or control program (n = 38). Both programs were completed at home over a 5-week period. Outcome measures assessed literacy, numeracy, executive functioning, and behavioral/emotional problems, and were con

[Unresolved attachment and remembered childhood trauma in patients undergoing psychosomatic inpatient treatment].

OBJECTIVE: Clinical populations are characterised by a high level of childhood trauma and unresolved attachment status ("U"). Unresolved attachment status indicates the inability to integrate attachment-related dangers. Little is known about the interaction of traumatic childhood experiences and an unresolved attachment status. METHOD: We administered the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP) to 45 newly admitted psychosomatic inpatients. Childhood trauma (CTQ) and distress were assessed by self-report questionnaires, and cognitive-emotional development was evaluated with the Level

Staff variables associated with the challenging behaviour of clients with severe or profound intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has identified that staff-client interactions play an important role in the origin and maintenance of challenging behaviour. Particularly, the reciprocity between staff behaviour and client behaviour has been considered a key issue. Furthermore, severe challenging behaviour has been found to elicit negative emotional reactions from staff which in turn may influence staff's behaviour. Another variable that has been associated with staff behaviour are staff's attributions regarding clients' challenging behaviour. The present study tested several hypotheses about ass

Facial emotion recognition and its relationship to symptomatic, subjective, and functional outcomes in outpatients with chronic schizophrenia.

Outcome in schizophrenia is multidimensional and consists of clinical and psychosocial domains. Difficulties in affect recognition are a hallmark of schizophrenia, but there is little research investigating the consequences of this deficit on patients' psychosocial status. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship of facial affect recognition and treatment outcomes in terms of psychopathology, quality of life (QOL), and psychosocial functioning. We investigated 40 regular attendees of a specialized schizophrenia outpatient clinic who had been stable both from a symptomatic and a med

Assessment of Greek Smokers' Psychological Characteristics and Empathy While Smoking in Enclosed Public Spaces and Near Nonsmokers.

Background Smoking presents a strong association between emotional intelligence and increased anxiety and depression. Empathy is a form of perception where people feel the emotional states of others as their own. The act of smoking expresses indifference to social norms and the health of nonsmokers, which speaks to smokers' psychology. We conducted this study to identify the impact of smoking in psychology, empathy, and smoking behavior and examine the effect of smokers' psychological characteristics and empathy toward smoking in enclosed public spaces and in front of nonsmokers. Methodology A…

Graph theory-based machine learning for automated fibromyalgia diagnosis using fMRI during an emotional task.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a multifaceted chronic pain disorder presenting with pain throughout the musculoskeletal system, alongside chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairments. Current diagnostic criteria primarily rely on symptom questionnaires, with no specific laboratory markers or definitive tests, making diagnosis subjective and often delayed. Moreover, the overlap with other central pain syndromes further complicates accurate diagnosis. Neuroimaging studies, particularly functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), have shown promise in elucidating brain abnorm

Mental Health Experiences and Challenges Among Individuals with Myasthenia Gravis: Insights from Patient-Centered, Qualitative Analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Historically, anxiety and depression rates have been higher among individuals with myasthenia gravis (MG) than the general population, and self-reported sentiments and experiences of mental health impairment may be more common than formal diagnoses. Patient-centered research can provide insight into self-described anxiety and depressive symptoms and stressors experienced by those with MG in the United States (US) and improve understanding of the current prevalence of anxiety and depression. METHODS: Insights were collected from three sources. First, a literature review of quanti

New Classification System and Defect-Oriented Algorithm for Functional Soft-Palate Reconstruction with Buccinator Myomucosal Flaps.

Background/Objectives: Currently, there is a lack of a comprehensive classification system for soft-palate defects that provides synthetic information to guide functional reconstructive treatment. Our awareness, shaped by extensive experience, of the superiority of myomucosal flaps to fasciocutaneous flaps in functional palate reconstruction has driven us to introduce a new defect-based classification system and propose a new algorithm for reconstructing soft-palate defects using buccinator myomucosal flaps. Methods: Soft-palate defects were classified into five classes. A reconstruction algor

Brain functional connectivities that mediate the association between childhood traumatic events, and adult mental health and cognition.

BACKGROUND: Childhood traumatic events are risk factors for psychopathology, but large-scale studies of how childhood traumatic events relate to mental health and cognition in adulthood, and how the brain is involved, are needed. METHODS: The associations between childhood traumatic events (such as abuse and neglect, and defined by the 'Childhood Trauma' questions in the UK Biobank database) and brain functional connectivity, mental health problems, and cognitive performance were investigated by a univariate correlation analysis with 19,535 participants aged 45-79 from the UK Biobank dataset.
