In 1994, a 56-year-old Burmese woman presented with bloody discharge per vaginam had undergone pelvic examination disclosing multiple small ulcerated and friable lesions with contact bleeding at vulva, vagina and cervix. Wet smears from vaginal discharge showed typical Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites. The patient was treated with metronidazole 750 mg three times daily for 7 days, resulting in complete recovery of the lesions in 10 days. The pathology, risk factors, diagnosis and management of the disease are discussed.

Immunisation of hamsters with the Sephadex G-200 chromatographed Fraction-I of the crude amoebic extract afforded protection in 58% of the animals against an intrahepatic challenge with a virulent subline of axenic Entamoeba histolytica NIH-200 (V). The protected animals had variable levels of anti-FI antiamoebic antibodies, while none of the infected controls had such antibodies. Findings suggest that chromatographed FI of crude amoebic extract might function as a potent immunogen affording protection in amoebic infection.

Nine hundred and thirty three students of Dacca University were examined: mean haemoglobin levels were 80.5 per cent for men and 70.0 per cent for women. Five hundred and thirty three (57.3%) of the students had single or multiple intestinal parasitic infections, of which Ascaris lumbricoides (366), Entamoeba histolytica (113) and Trichuris trichiura (99) were the commonest. It is suggested that chronic nutritional deficiencies are compounded by these parasites, leading to low weights, and low haemoglobins.

Entamoeba histolytica is a protozoan parasite that affects a large proportion of the world's population and causes amoebic dysentery and extra-intestinal disease. Many individuals remain asymptomatic during colonisation; in 10% of individuals, the parasite breaks through the mucosal barrier and leads to invasive disease. An eight-month-old girl who was evaluated for hypo-albuminaemia and was diagnosed with amoebic colitis is reported. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of hypo-albuminaemia owing to amoebic colitis in any age group.

Evidence from in vitro studies suggests that gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) and nitric oxide (NO) are important in host defense against the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. We used SCID mice with targeted disruption of the IFN-gamma receptor gene and mice with targeted disruption of the gene encoding inducible NO synthase to show that IFN-gamma plays a role in the innate immunity to amebic liver abscess seen in SCID mice while NO is required for control of amebic liver abscess in immunocompetent mice.

Parasitic diseases are common in developing countries; yet they are infrequently diagnosed in cytologic material. Six cases are described where routine cytologic examination identified the parasites and suggested the diagnosis. There were three cases of Entamoeba histolytica infection of the female genital tract and one each of hydatid cyst of the brain, Strongyloides stercoralis infection of the lung and filarial infection of the urinary bladder. To our knowledge, cytologic diagnosis of hydatid cyst of the brain and filarial infection of the urinary bladder has not been previously reported.
