[Epidemiology of emerging and resurging vector-borne diseases with special attention to climate change in Germany (review)].

Vector-borne diseases gained importance in Germany during the past years. Borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis are already well-known infectious diseases, transmitted by Ixodes ricinus. But reports on severe diseases, formerly only known as so-called "travel sickness" from tropical countries, markedly increased in the recent years. Several climate models predict a global warming of 1.4 degrees C up to 5.8 degrees C until the year 2100, and as climate-typical temperature barriers restrict the distribution of the vectors, especially arthropod-borne diseases are strongly influenced by the clim

[UV-induced skin cancers].

In this review the epidemiology and pathogenetic aspects of UV-induced malignant skin tumours (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma) are discussed with regard to current literature. Whereas present knowledge, in particular, gained from experimental data, permits substantial conclusions about the development of squamous cell carcinoma, the situation for basal cell carcinoma and melanoma does not appear to be unequivocally clear. One reason for this can be explained by the fact that there exist no adequate animal models for these tumours that could exactly reflect the biolo

Anger, anxiety, and depression as risk factors for cardiovascular disease: the problems and implications of overlapping affective dispositions.

Several recent reviews have identified 3 affective dispositions--depression, anxiety, and anger-hostility--as putative risk factors for coronary heart disease. There are, however, mixed and negative results. Following a critical summary of epidemiological findings, the present article discusses the construct and measurement overlap among the 3 negative affects. Recognition of the overlap necessitates the development of more complex affect-disease models and has implications for the interpretation of prior studies, statistical analyses, prevention, and intervention in health psychology and beha

Is vitamin A consumption a risk factor for osteoporotic fracture?

Severe vitamin A toxicity is known to have adverse effects on skeletal health. Studies involving animal models and case reports have documented that hypervitaminosis A is associated with bone resorption, hypercalcaemia and bone abnormalities. More recently, some epidemiological studies have suggested that high habitual intake of vitamin A could contribute to low bone mineral content and fracture risk. The evidence relating to the possible deleterious role of vitamin A in bone health is of variable quality and is potentially confounded by collinearity of nutrient intake and difficulties in asse

Inflammation of the brain in Alzheimer's disease: implications for therapy.

We briefly describe the similarities and differences between a systemic and a local immune reaction and review the evidence that the latter occurs in Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains. The evidence comes mainly from studies on the complement system, microglia, and cytokines, all of which are important actors in the inflammatory process. The evidence is now overwhelming that the complement proteins and many of the mediators of inflammation are produced locally by brain cells. We will mention briefly the many epidemiological studies indicating that the use of anti-inflammatory drugs reduces the in

Predicting the impact of school-based treatment for urinary schistosomiasis given by the Ghana Partnership for Child Development.

Mathematical models can be used to predict the impact of interventions to control infectious diseases. In this paper, an epidemiological model is used to predict the impact of chemotherapy of school-age children infected with Schistosoma haematobium, in a programme conducted by the Ghana Partnership for Child Development in the Volta Region, Ghana. Existing data were used to validate the predictions of the model, demonstrating convincingly the ability of the model to make correct predictions. Predictions of trends in mean egg count, infection prevalence and prevalence of heavy infection (> 50

Lack of airborne spread of infection by Legionella pneumophila among guinea pigs.

Many investigators find no spread of Legionnaires disease from person to person. The present study examined the question of airborne transmission of infection by Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 from guinea pigs inoculated nasally with the agent to healthy guinea pigs. The nasal inoculation produced confluent peribronchiolar pneumonia similar to the pulmonary lesions observed in humans, but by techniques of clinical observation, serology, culture, and pathology, there was no evidence of airborne spread of infection from 26 inoculated guinea pigs to 64 uninoculated guinea pigs. The results, c

Disease Burden of Early-Onset Pancreatic Cancer in Adults Aged 20-54 Years in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A GBD 2023 Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer incidence rises in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet data on early-onset disease (20-54 years) are scarce. METHODS: Using Global Burden of Disease Study 2023 data (1990-2023), we analyzed incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for early-onset pancreatic cancer in LMIC adults. Trends were assessed via estimated annual percentage change (EAPC), stratified by World Bank income groups. Decomposition analysis quantified epidemiological/demographic drivers. Socioeconomic inequalities were evaluated using socio-demographic index (SD

Modeling the environment-related risk of frogeye leaf spot (Cercospora sojina) in soybean across the United States.

Frogeye leaf spot (FLS), caused by Cercospora sojina, is a common soybean disease across the U.S. Fungicides are a key management tool, particularly when susceptible cultivars are planted; however, widespread QoI resistance has raised concern about overreliance on the remaining effective fungicide classes. Protecting these chemical classes is essential for long-term sustainability, particularly under narrow profit margins. To develop an FLS prediction model that supports more efficient fungicide use, environmental and epidemiological data from multiple site-years were analyzed in 2024 using co

From Diet to Dysbiosis: How Nutritional Factors Shape Gut Microbiota and Drive Airway Inflammation in Pediatric Asthma.

Asthma prevalence in school-age children varies widely by geography, from below 5% in some regions to above 20% in others, averaging 10-12% across industrialized countries, but genetic factors account for less than 40% of disease liability. Gut microbiota is increasingly recognized as a critical intermediary between early-life dietary exposure and immunological trajectories that determine asthma susceptibility. Through the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), particularly butyrate, propionate, and acetate, commensal bacteria regulate dendritic cell function, promote T-regulatory (Tre

Air pollution and chronic respiratory diseases: a narrative review including a case study in Campania (Italy).

Air pollution is a major public health risk, contributing significantly to the global burden of chronic respiratory diseases. Chronic exposure to pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, NO₂, and O₃ is associated with documented pathogenetic mechanisms, including oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, epithelial damage, and airway remodeling, which promote the development of respiratory diseases such as asthma, COPD, and cardiovascular disease. This review examines epidemiological data at the national and regional levels, focusing on Campania, one of the Italian regions most exposed to air pollution l

Seroprevalence and Associated Factors of Hepatitis A Virus and Hepatitis E Virus Infection Among Blood Donors in Argentina: A Multicentre Study.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) are enterically transmitted hepatotropic viruses with heterogeneous epidemiological patterns in Argentina. Data simultaneously evaluating both infections in blood donor populations are limited. We conducted a multicentre cross-sectional study including 848 blood donors from three Argentine blood banks between September 2024 and August 2025. Total antiHAV and antiHEV IgG antibodies were determined by ELISA. Sociodemographic, occupational, dietary, and donation-related variables were collected using standardized questionnaires. Logistic regress

Marburg virus disease outbreaks, mathematical models, and disease parameters: a systematic review.

The 2023 Marburg virus disease outbreaks in Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania highlighted the importance of better understanding this lethal pathogen. We did a systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42023393345) of peer-reviewed articles reporting historical outbreaks, modelling studies, and epidemiological parameters focused on Marburg virus disease. We searched PubMed and Web of Science from database inception to March 31, 2023. Two reviewers evaluated all titles and abstracts with consensus-based decision making. To ensure agreement, 13 (31%) of 42 studies were double-extracted and a custom-designed q

Susceptibility loci for pancreatic cancer in the Brazilian population.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PA) is a very aggressive cancer and has one of the poorest prognoses. Usually, the diagnosis is late and resistant to conventional treatment. Environmental and genetic factors contribute to the etiology, such as tobacco and alcohol consumption, chronic pancreatitis, diabetes and obesity. Somatic mutation in pancreatic cancer cells are known and SNP profile by GWAS could access novel genetic risk factors for this disease in different population context. Here we describe a SNP panel for Brazilian pancreatic cancer, together with clinical and epidemiological

Atopic March: Collegium Internationale Allergologicum Update 2020.

In recent decades, the worldwide prevalence of allergic disease has increased considerably. The atopic march is a model aimed at explaining the apparent progression of allergic diseases from atopic dermatitis (AD) to allergic asthma (AA) and to allergic rhinitis (AR). It hypothesizes that allergic disease begins, typically in children, with the development of AD, then AA, and finally progresses to AR. This theory has been widely studied in cross-sectional and long-term longitudinal studies and it has been found that as prevalence of AD declines, prevalence of AA increases. A similar relationsh

Organophosphate pesticide exposure and neurodegeneration.

Organophosphate pesticides (OPs) are used extensively throughout the world. The main sources of contamination for humans are dietary ingestion and occupational exposures. The major concerns related to OP exposure are delayed effects following high level exposures as well as the impact of low level exposures during the lifespan which are suggested to be a risk factor for nervous system chronic diseases. Both high and low level exposures may have a particularly high impact in population subgroups such as aged or genetically vulnerable populations. Apart from the principle action of OPs which inv

Posterior predictive model checks for disease mapping models.

Disease incidence or disease mortality rates for small areas are often displayed on maps. Maps of raw rates, disease counts divided by the total population at risk, have been criticized as unreliable due to non-constant variance associated with heterogeneity in base population size. This has led to the use of model-based Bayes or empirical Bayes point estimates for map creation. Because the maps have important epidemiological and political consequences, for example, they are often used to identify small areas with unusually high or low unexplained risk, it is important that the assumptions of
