We report a rare case of primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube. A 72-year-old post-menopausal woman presenting with abnormal secretion of blood-stained liquid, underwent surgery because of findings of atypical squamous cells (ASCUS) on a routine Papanicolaou smear. The histological diagnosis on cervical biopsy was of CIN 3. Adenocarcinoma of the Fallopian tube was incidentally found.

Primary fallopian tube carcinoma is a rare form of female cancer and the genetic basis of its carcinogenesis remains unclear. Eighteen cases of primary fallopian tube adenocarcinoma were studied. Immunohistochemical staining for p53, HER-2/neu and c-myc genes were performed. Overexpression of p53 was detected in 12 cases (67%), HER-2/neu in 16 cases (89%), and c-myc in 11 cases (61%). The potential relevance of overexpression of the three genes with clinicopathological features was examined, but no significant correlation was found. We report the case history of a patient with a family history of breast and ovarian cancer who was subsequently found to be a carrier of the BRCA1 gene, in whom a tiny focus of clear cell carcinoma was found at the fimbrial end of one fallopian tube when she underwent prophylactic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingoophorectomy. The implications of this finding are discussed.

The detection of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) or SHBG mRNA in several sex steroid target tissues, has raised the possibility that SHBG modulates the action of sex steroids outside the vascular compartment. To establish prognosis, histologic appearance and p53 and c-erbB-2 expression in cancer tissue, six cases of primary transitional cancer of the fallopian tube were analyzed. Primary teratomas of the fallopian tube are extremely uncommon. To date, only about 50 cases have been reported in the literature. Six of them are reported to have been in conjunction with tubal ectopic pregnancies. Herein we present the first case of benign cystic teratoma of the unilateral fallopian tube associated with an intrauterine term pregnancy, reported in Taiwan.

Biopsy specimens were obtained from the distal end of the Fallopian tubes of 62 women with tubal infertility and examined by light and electron microscopy. A case of clear cell hyperplasia of the fallopian tube epithelium associated with ectopic pregnancy is described. The lesion was encountered in a 31-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain and had a positive pregnancy test. Ultrasound examination disclosed an enlarged right fallopian tube. The origin of rarely encountered transitional cell carcinomas of the fallopian tubes has, to date, been ascribed to transitional cell metaplasia of the tubal serosa or subserosal Walthard rests. We report here three examples of transitional cell metaplasia of the mucosa of the fallopian tubes--in each instance an incidental finding--and propose this lesion as a hitherto unreported possible precursor for such tumors.
