Evaluating the effect of finely ground, dry-rolled, and crumbled corn grain on performance, feeding behavior, and starch digestion in Holstein dairy heifers.

Corn processing methods including finely ground (FGC), dry rolled (DRC), and crumbled corn (CRC) were evaluated to determine their effects on average daily gain (ADG), structural growth, starch digestibility, feeding behavior, and blood metabolites of young dairy heifers. In this study, 36 Holstein heifers [91 ± 4 d of age, 105 ± 6.5 kg of body weight (BW); mean ± standard deviation] housed in 9 pens (4 heifers per pen) were fed diets (dry matter basis) containing 20% forage (wheat straw) and 80% corn-based concentrate for 60 d. Pens were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 dietary treatments based on

Investigating the Antifungal Effect of the Essential Oil of Thymus eriocalyx on Dominant Filamentous Fungal Agents Isolated from Livestock and Poultry Feed.

BACKGROUND: One of the most important principles in disease control is the health of livestock and poultry feed. Given the natural growth of Th. eriocalyx in Lorestan province, its essential oil can be added to the livestock and poultry feed and prevent the growth of the dominant filamentous fungi. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, this study aimed to identify the dominant moldy fungal agents of livestock and poultry feed, examine phytochemical compounds and analyze antifungal effects, anti-oxidant properties, as well as cytotoxicity against human white blood cells in Th. eriocalyx. METHODS: Sixty sampl

Acceptability of using a nasogastric refeeding protocol with adult patients with medically unstable eating disorders.

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Nasogastric feeding is becoming commonly used to support patients with medically compromised eating disorders. Previous research has demonstrated the safety of this approach, however there is limited evidence as to how adult patients and staff perceive this feeding method. This study aimed to describe the acceptability of a nasogastric refeeding protocol with adult patients with medically unstable eating disorders and the staff involved in their treatment. METHOD: This was a qualitative exploratory study using semi-structured interviews conducted in acute medic

Predictors of effective kangaroo mother care, exclusive breastfeeding, and skin-to-skin contact among low birthweight newborns in Amhara, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 20% of all newborns are born with low birth weight (LBW). There is, therefore, an urgent need to expedite the delivery of high-impact, evidenced-based, and low-cost interventions such as kangaroo mother care (KMC (defined as continuous skin-to-skin care) and exclusive breastfeeding for this vulnerable group. METHODS: A multinational World Health Organization (WHO)-supported consortium created and tested the impact of locally-specific and globally-informed phases of KMC care on KMC uptake/scale-up across multiple sites. Here we report on the study of KMC predictors that i

Banana Blossom Ingestion Does Not Increase Breast Milk Volume in Mothers of Preterm Newborns: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

Background: Breast milk is essential for the development of a newborn's neurological, gastrointestinal, and immune systems and helps reduce the risk of infections and infant mortality. Banana flowers, often combined with additives such as ginger, are commonly included in the country's local diets because they are believed to enhance postpartum lactation. We aimed to investigate the impact of banana blossom extract pills on breast milk volume (BMV) in mothers of preterm newborns. Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted; it involved eligible preterm mothers, w

Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol on the Effects of a Sensory Motor Intervention Associated with Kangaroo Skin-to-Skin Contact in Preterm Newborns.

There is still very limited evidence on the effects of neonatal interventions on infant neurodevelopmental outcomes, including general movements (GMs). This research will primarily assess the effects of a sensory motor physical therapy intervention combined with kangaroo skin-to-skin contact on the GMs of hospitalized preterm newborns. Secondary outcomes include body weight, posture and muscle tone, behavioral state, length of hospital stay, and breastfeeding. This study protocol details a two-arm parallel clinical trial methodology, involving participants with a postmenstrual age of 34-35 wee

Exploring implementation processes of a parent-targeted educational video for improving newborn pain treatment: A sequential exploratory mixed-methods study.

Despite known analgesic effects of breastfeeding (BF), skin-to-skin care (SSC), and sweet solutions (sucrose) for newborns, these interventions remain underutilized. Our team produced a five-minute parent-targeted video (BSweet2Babies) demonstrating BF, SSC, and sucrose during newborn blood sampling. We conducted a sequential exploratory mixed-methods study with eight maternal-newborn units across Ontario, Canada to identify barriers and facilitators to implementing the video and the three pain management strategies.Over a 6-month period, data collection included 15 telephone interviews, two e

Acid Suppression for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease in Infants.

Gastroesophageal reflux is a normal physiologic occurrence that is common throughout infancy and usually resolves on its own. Infrequently, reflux causes complications and turns into gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which may warrant intervention. Available interventions vary in invasiveness and supporting data may be lacking for efficacy and safety. Nonpharmacologic interventions are first-line therapy for GERD in infants, whereas pharmacologic and surgical approaches are controversial. Efficacy data are limited for pharmacologic strategies for infantile GERD and safety data have demon

The effect of tube versus bottle feeding colostrum on immunoglobulin G absorption, abomasal emptying, and plasma hormone concentrations in newborn calves.

The objective of this study was to determine if feeding colostrum to newborn calves through an esophageal tube, compared with a nipple bottle, would delay abomasal emptying, which would in turn decrease passive transfer of IgG and plasma glucose, insulin, and glucagon-like peptide (GLP) 1 and GLP-2 concentrations. Twenty newborn Holstein bull calves were fed 3 L of colostrum replacer (200 g of IgG) through either an esophageal tube or nipple bottle at 2 h after birth followed by feeding pooled whole milk every 12 h after birth. Acetaminophen was mixed into the colostrum meal as a marker for ab

Oral versus intubated feeding and the effect on glycaemic and insulinaemic responses, gastric emptying and satiety.

Cephalic phase responses (CPR) are important in early initiation of digestion and maximal absorption of nutrients prior to ingestion. Bypassing CPR has been shown to have consequences on metabolic responses that may influence satiety. The aim of this study was to investigate if using gastric intubation to bypass oro-pharyngeal and oesophageal exposure would reduce CPR including insulin and blood glucose and whether these impact on gastric emptying and satiety. Ten male subjects were tested on 2 occasions, 3-7 days apart after an overnight fast, in randomized order. Subjects were cannulated and

Positioning after feedings: what is the evidence to reduce feeding intolerances?

Nursing’s goal is to be the least invasive as the patient's condition allows. As a NICU nurse, each feeding for our patients is a priority for them to grow and develop with the idea to speed discharge to home. When infants develop reflux or have increased gastric aspirates, we are concerned that their weight will taper and their length of stay will increase. Positioning provides nurses with a noninvasive option to care for these patients. The that the right-side position is best for infants to enhance digestion stems from theories of anatomy and physics. Research strengthens this supposition f

Congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis: feeding evaluation and management.

PURPOSE: We identified four patients with congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis (CNPAS) with feeding and respiratory difficulties. While feeding difficulties have been described in infants with other causes of nasal obstruction (e.g., choanal atresia), little attention has been focused on feeding in infants with CNPAS. FINDINGS: All four patients were treated with nasal steroids and nasal saline and two underwent surgical repair of the CNPAS at 2 months of age. Except for gastroesophageal reflux in one patient, upper gastrointestinal tract (UGI) contrast studies were normal in all patie
