While Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) are now a strong focus of policy-makers throughout Australia, they have received strikingly little consideration in Australian criminal courts. Many people who have an FASD are highly suggestible, have difficulty linking their actions to consequences, controlling impulses and remembering things, and thus FASD raises particular issues for appropriate sentencing and the admissibility of evidence. This article considers the approach of Australian criminal courts to FASD. It reviews the recent case of AH v Western Australia which exemplifies the diff

Exposure to ethanol during pregnancy is detrimental to brain development. Individuals affected by the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome present a number of central nervous system dysfunctions including microencephaly and mental retardation. Studies on the mechanisms of ethanol's developmental neurotoxicity have focused on its interaction with neurons; however, emerging evidence is suggesting that ethanol can significantly affect glial cells as well. A number of in vitro studies have shown that ethanol can inhibit the proliferation of various glial cells (mostly primary astrocytes or astrocytoma cells) at

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is caused by heavy alcohol consumption during pregnancy and is characterized by specific anomalies of the face; prenatal and postnatal growth deficits; and a variety of central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities, including mental retardation. Children with either full or partial FAS often incur severe and costly secondary disabilities. Despite the importance of surveillance for establishing the magnitude of FAS and in monitoring trends in the occurrence of this disease, population-based surveillance for FAS has been difficult because the syndrome can be diagnosed o

Fetal alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a well recognized pattern of malformations, produced by a heavy and chronic intake of ethanol during pregnancy. The Authors report a clinical case of FAS, observed during an epidemiological study on alcohol abuse of pregnancy women. They describe the anomalies and malformations of a newborn by a heavy drinking mother, and of his seven year old brother. Finally, the Authors consider the toxicological and preventive aspects of problem: counselling women of child-bearing age to the dangers of alcoholic intake during the gestation period is a professional responsibi

Fetal alcoholism induces an extremely wide spectrum of embryopathies. In addition to the classical fetal alcohol syndrome, alcohol is also the cause of numerous fetal malformations. A case of Conradi-Hünermann type chondrodysplasia punctata is reported. Maternal alcohol ingestion was reported during gestation.

A report of a patient with fetal alcohol syndrome has been presented with a review of the syndrome and the literature. Although the patient was treated in the operating room, many patients with less severe medical involvement or less extensive dental needs can be treated as outpatients. Each case must be considered individually with the prime concern being the patient's safety. Such patients may have numerous emotional or physical problems that the dentist must recognize. These patients are at high risk for several types of heart defects, many of which will require consultation for bacterial e

Recent studies of mouse models have suggested that malformations associated with the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) are caused by the effects of ethanol on early embryos during gastrulation and neurulation. A study of Xenopus laevis embryos showed that exposure of gastrula stage amphibian embryos to ethanol inhibits migration of the mesodermal cells, causes formation of small neural plates, and subsequently causes hypoplastic craniofacial malformations in tadpoles. We now report effects of ethanol on the primitive streak stage mouse embryos. An ethanol solution (25%) was injected intraperitoneal

An unusual case of the fetal alcohol syndrome with hydrocephalus caused by a Dandy-Walker cyst is reported. It is postulated that aberrant neuroglial tissue due to prenatal maternal alcohol ingestion may have caused the Dandy-Walker deformity.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders affect approximately 1 in 20 school age children in the United States of America. To study fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, mouse models are commonly used. Of the many approaches of gestational exposure, voluntary drinking paradigms represent the most similar mechanism of drinking as human exposure. These exposures can be done through low-tech solutions such as test tubes (TT), or more high-tech methods such as a volumetric drinking monitor (VDM). Here were compare the TT method and the VDM directly, to evaluate their effect on female mouse drinking…

Maternal ethanol exposure during pregnancy may cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). FASD is the leading cause of mental retardation. The most deleterious effect of fetal alcohol exposure is inducing neuroapoptosis in the developing brain. Ethanol-induced loss of neurons in the central nervous system underlies many of the behavioral deficits observed in FASD. The cerebellum is one of the brain areas that are most susceptible to ethanol during development. Ethanol exposure causes a loss of both cerebellar Purkinje cells and granule cells. This review focuses on the toxic effect of etha…

Kyle van Oosterum and Emma Curran have recently argued that the impairment argument against abortion is weak and accomplishes little. They also claim that impairment fails to explain what makes giving a child fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) immoral, which is an important premise of the argument. Here, I explain that the impairment argument is not as weak as they believe. Further, I argue that impairment offers a superior explanation for what makes giving a child FAS immoral than their proposal based on creative beneficence.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that may arise following prenatal exposure to alcohol. Children with FASD tend to experience a diverse set of physical, social, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. Caregivers of these children likely experience elevated levels of parenting stress; however, research in this area is still in its infancy.
AIM: The present study sought to more fully understand the current state of the literature on parenting stress experienced by caregivers of children with FASD.
METHOD: Databases including PsycInfo, Scop

OBJECTIVE: To assess general and oral health status, including the presence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs, in children and adolescents with FASD in relation to different types of this disorder.
SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: A total of 67 participants (29 males and 38 females) aged 2.5-17.8 years with confirmed diagnosis of FASD were included.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants were divided into three subgroups: foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), partial foetal alcohol syndrome (PFAS) and alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorders (ARND). General health, oral health stat
