Post-conflict nutritional status of school-age children in North Wollo zone, Northeast Ethiopia: a multi-center cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Conflict invariably disrupts food production in affected areas, exacerbates food insecurity, and results in population displacement. In 2021, the invasion of the Amhara region by the Tigrayan armed group led to widespread impoverishment of much of Amhara population. The conflict particularly exacerbated malnutrition rates in the North Wollo Zone. Despite this, studies focusing on undernutrition in conflict-affected areas within the Zone have not yet been documented. Therefore, this study assessed post-conflict nutritional status of school-age children in Northeast Ethiopia. METHOD…

Estimated timing of the first menstrual period and dietary and nutritional correlates of menarche among urban school-going adolescents in four sub-Saharan African sites.

Characterizing the timing of menarche and the factors that are associated with it is important for understanding a population's reproductive … menarche at each site. Associations between menarche and BMI-for-age, stunting, dietary quality and food insecurity across settings were assessed using Poisson regression models adjusted for country and school levels. The estimated median age at menarche was 13.1 years (95% confidence interval: 12.7, 13.5) in Ouagadougou; 12.9 (12.6, 13.2) in Addis Ababa; 13.3 (1 …

Food is Medicine (FIM) has been described as a range of food-based programs that aim to prevent, manage, and treat diet-related chronic diseases in partnership with health care systems. Research is lacking in how these programs could promote plant-rich dietary patterns and other sustainability practices to support both human and planetary health. Exploring finger millet as an underutilised African indigenous grain crop for functional food development, sustainable nutrition, and health.

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity and malnutrition remain major challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa, driven by climate change and agricultural systems that rely heavily on a few staple crops, including maize, rice, and wheat. The prioritisation of these crops during the Green Revolution has contributed to the neglect of nutrient-rich indigenous grains. Finger millet (Eleusine coracana), an indigenous African cereal, has attracted increasing attention because of its exceptional nutritional composition, climate resilience, and potential for functional food development. This review evaluated the role of…

Underlying Medical Conditions and Severe Illness Among 540,667 Adults Hospitalized With COVID-19, March 2020-March 2021.

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) emergency allotments and emergency rent assistance provided support to low-income households. Rent burden, a form of housing insecurity, can severely limit household resources, which, in turn, affects health equity. We explored whether these policy interventions equitably supported households that were or were not experiencing rent burden. METHODS: We used data from the US Household Pulse Survey (June 2022-May 2023) to examine whether associations between emergency support policies and indicators of f

Maternal diet and nutritional status during pregnancy and lactation: a review of implications on milk composition and lactation outcomes.

Maternal diet and nutritional status during lactation have important implications for human milk composition and lactation outcomes, yet the strength and consistency of these associations remain incompletely understood.
