The combination of atlantoaxial joint dislocation accompanied by an odontoid process fracture is exceptionally rare, with only a few cases reported. The estimated frequency of these cases is < 2% of all upper cervical spine injuries. In this report, the authors describe an unusual case of traumatic atlantoaxial dislocation with a type III odontoid fracture in a 44-year-old male patient. Before the diagnosis, the patient had a history of seeking a masseur for a neck massage. Subsequently, the patient underwent occipitocervical stabilization to address the underlying condition. This procedure ai

To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports in the literature of an open comminuted scaphoid fracture dislocation. We present such a rare case. The case report illustrates the case of a 58-year-old right-handed press operator who injured his left wrist when his hand got caught in a press machine. He received initial treatment at another hospital and was subsequently referred to our hospital. Eight days after the injury, surgery was performed under the brachial plexus block. Successful bone fusion was achieved through volar locking plate fixation, primary free bone grafting from the radi…

PURPOSE: Radiocarpal dislocation fractures (RCDF) are rare injuries that usually occur in a violent trauma setting. Our work aimed to analyze our patients' functional and radiological results after surgery and identify potential medium- and long-term complications while reviewing other series previously reported in the literature.
METHODS: We have performed a retrospective study over five years at our university hospital, eleven patients were selected, and the mean follow-up was about 33 months. We used Dumontier's and Moneim's classifications for classifying the injuries. All the patients un

BACKGROUND: Malunited posterior pilon fractures with talus dislocation (mPPFtd) are rare and there are no appropriate treatment strategies. The purpose of this study was to introduce a stepped strategy featuring preliminary soft tissue management according to the Ilizarov principle and delayed open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) through a modified posteromedial approach to overcome rigid soft tissue contracture.
METHOD: From February 2015 to August 2021, 12 selected patients with mPPFtd who were treated with the staged protocol (Group A) were retrospectively analysed. The clinical and

CASE: Proximal humerus fractures are a relatively common injury, making up approximately 5 % of all extremity fractures. Concurrent damage to the axillary artery, however, is not a commonly associated trauma. We present a unique case of a proximal humerus fracture-dislocation resulting in an axillary artery dissection and upper extremity ischemia, requiring emergent vascular intervention.
CONCLUSION: Axillary artery injury secondary to a proximal humerus fracture-dislocation is a rare, but possibly devastating complication. A thorough physical examination to identify any neurovascular deficit

The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for postoperative carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in operative management for scaphoid nonunion and secondary fracture dislocation, treated surgically with takedown and bone grafting. We reviewed medical records of all our patients that underwent carpal tunnel release after scaphoid reconstruction surgery from August 2002 to December 2020. We identified a total of 7 out of 191 patients (3.7%). We investigated surgical parameters, pre- to postoperative changes, in three-dimensional measurements of the scaphoid and carpal tunnel morphometry. We…

BACKGROUND: Odontoid fractures in association with a C1-C2 rotatory luxation reports are seldom found in the literature. The fusion between the lateral mass of C1 and C2 could be of interest to ensure adequate treatment in these particular cases. We report 23 cases where there was coexistence of an odontoid fracture and rotatory subluxation, which were treated surgically using cages between C1 and C2 or just traditional Goel-Harms technique. We evaluated the radiologic fusion rate, reoperation rate, and complications.
METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective, cohort study of patients

Although the shoulder is one of the most commonly dislocated joints in the body, bilateral gleno-humeral joint dislocation is considered rare. Due to its complexity and paucity of cases reported in the literature, it represents both a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. We report a rare case of an adolescent boy who suffered chronic bilateral anterior shoulder dislocations with proximal humerus fracture and Hill-Sachs lesion after febrile seizure following COVID-19 vaccination. An 18-year-old male presented with bilateral proximal humerus fracture with anterior shoulder dislocation following

CASE: A 45-year-old man appeared to have a central (protrusio) hip dislocation but actually had a transverse posterior wall acetabulum fracture with irreducible posterior dislocation due to impalement of the femoral head on the ischial spine. He underwent urgent open reduction on presentation and subsequent internal fixation in a staged manner. He developed avascular necrosis at 18 months postoperatively.
CONCLUSION: The nondisplaced ilioischial and iliopectineal acetabular radiographic lines were alerts that the dislocation was actually posterior. This led to further imaging before any close

CASE: Osteochondral shearing fracture of the humeral head after an anterior shoulder dislocation is a condition that has rarely been reported in literature. We report a case of a large posteriorly located fragment of such a fracture in a 23-year-old man. We performed open reduction and internal fixation with resorbable pins through a deltopectoral approach and subscapularis tenotomy.
CONCLUSION: In our case of a large osteochondral fracture of the posterior humeral head, treatment by open reduction and internal fixation showed an excellent radiographic result at 1 year and clinical result up

INTRODUCTION: Talus fracture is an uncommon fracture that can be encountered on day- to- day basis. However, it is the 2nd most common tarsal bone to get fractured after calcaneum and accounts for approximately 1% of all fractures around foot and ankle. The anastomotic ring around the talar neck is highly likely to get damaged at the time of the fracture, which, in turn, hampers the blood supply to the body of talus. As a result, the bone healing is delayed and the integrity of the healed fracture is poor which leads to poor functional outcome. Almost 39% cases are missed during the initial ev

CASE: A 50-year-old woman involved in a motorcycle accident sustained a transscaphoid transcapitate perilunate fracture dislocation with complete extrusion of the proximal scaphoid pole and lunate as a unit into the forearm. The patient underwent urgent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with screw fixation of the capitate and Kirschner wire fixation of the scaphoid, midcarpal joint, and lunotriquetral intervals. At 1-year postoperatively, radiographs confirm healing of capitate and scaphoid fractures, with no signs of avascular necrosis of the lunate.
CONCLUSION: Despite a complex f…

INTRODUCTION: Neglected Monteggia fracture dislocation in children leads to significant restriction of daily activities by causing decreased range of motion at elbow, stiffness, deformity, and neurological compromise. Various treatment strategies have been described in the literature and one of them is ulnar osteotomy combined with reduction of radial head and annular ligament reconstruction.
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of step-cut osteotomy without the use of bone grafting with reconstruction of annular ligament in the management of neglected Monteggia fracture dis…

Lisfranc injuries consist of a wide spectrum of injuries, ranging from subtle injuries to severe fracture-dislocations. Injuries with instability of the tarsometatarsal, intercuneiform, or naviculocuneiform joints should be treated with anatomic reduction and stable fixation. The best method of fixation is debated. Transarticular screw fixation has the disadvantage of damaging the tarsometatarsal joints. Bridging the tarsometatarsal joints with use of low-profile locking plates avoids the placement of screws through the joint and potentially reduces the risk of posttraumatic arthritis. Primary

Approximately 3% of all joint dislocations involve the hip joint, and only 8-10% of these will be anterior. Traumatic anterior open dislocation of the hip is rare in children and prone to be associated with injuries, extensive soft tissue damage, and avascular necrosis of the femoral head. We present a case of a 13-year-old boy who had an open anterior dislocation of the hip with ipsilateral avulsion of the greater trochanter after a tractor wheel crush in an agricultural accident. Additional lesions included a diaphyseal closed fracture of the contralateral femur. We report this case because

The incidence of heterotopic ossification in adolescents appears to be lower than in adults. There exist very few reports of heterotopic ossification with total bony ankylosis in child or adolescent populations. We describe a case of total bony ankylosis of the elbow secondary to heterotopic ossification, in a 14-year-old female. Total ankylosis of the elbow at 45 degrees of flexion was noted 6 months post-surgery, and complete surgical excision of the heterotopic mass was performed. After an additional one-time dose of radiation therapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug medication, full

Osteochondral flap fractures of the coronoid are rare occult fractures, often diagnosed in delay, in pediatric patients who underwent elbow dislocations. Only 11 pediatric cases of osteochondral flap fractures of the coronoid are described in the literature. We describe a pediatric case treated in our institution for an elbow dislocation accompanied by a triad of elbow fractures, including the osteochondral flap fracture of the coronoid, and review available literature on the osteochondral flap fracture of the coronoid in pediatric patients.
