To evaluate pin/screw/plate fixation for management of femoral neck fractures, 39 proximal femora were tested in both torsion and flexion under physiological loading conditions. Three, four, or five implants of six commonly used multiple-fixation devices, and a sliding hip screw with and without an additional 6.5-mm cancellous screw were examined in paired femora. The intact and postfixation femora were initially subjected to a single applied moment, and the torsion and bending stiffness were determined from the load-deformation data. Postfixation femora were also subjected to cyclic loading i

Distal radius fractures are common in elderly patients and often lead to functional impairment. This study compared closed reduction with external fixation (EF) and open reduction with locking plate fixation (LP) in elderly patients. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 80 elderly patients with unilateral distal radius fractures treated in our hospital from 2021 to 2024. Patients were divided into a closed reduction and EF group (n = 40) and an open reduction and locking plate internal fixation group (n = 40), according to the surgical procedure. General demographic and fracture-related d

UNLABELLED: Early open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with plates and screws for plafond injuries caused by skiing initially reported by Ruedi and Allgower proved inadequate for the treatment of high-energy motor vehicle accident type injuries. The purpose of our study was to review our treatment protocol using a spanning external fixator placed semi-emergently medially across the joint and a later staged ORIF of just the articular surface to achieve and maintain anatomic reduction.
METHODS: We preformed a retrospective study of 35 patients with 37 highly comminuted severe (OTA 43-B3

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study aims to predict the risk of 3-month nonunion in patients with unstable distal clavicle fractures (UDCFs) treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using machine learning (ML) methods. ML was chosen over traditional statistical approaches because of its superior ability to capture complex nonlinear interactions and to handle imbalanced datasets.
METHODS: We collected UDCFs patients at Nanjing Luhe People's Hospital (China) between January 2015 and May 2023. The unfavorable outcome was defined as 3-month nonunion, as represented by disappeared

Traditional treatment methods have certain limitations. In recent years, the technique of internal fixation with double-plane double-supported screws based on X-ray images has been proposed to improve the therapeutic effect. The main objective of this research was to examine the effectiveness of the X-ray image-based bi-planar double-braced screw internal fixation technique . During surgery, the procedure was determined based on X-ray images, followed by an open reduction procedure at the fracture site, and finally internal fixation using bi-planar double-support screws. All patients were succ

RATIONALE: Posterior wall comminuted fractures of the acetabulum are typically caused by high-energy trauma, and the complex anatomical structure of the acetabulum makes their treatment challenging. However, reports of the treatment of fresh acetabular fractures combined with femoral head necrosis are extremely rare.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 57-year-old male, injured in a car accident, presented with right hip pain and limited mobility. At the age of 50, the patient was diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the right femoral head, experiencing right hip pain and a limp while walking, for which cons

Combined fractures of the femoral head and acetabulum due to ballistic injuries are rare injuries, especially in the elderly. We present a case of a 70-year-old female who sustained a gunshot wound to the left hip, resulting in a comminuted femoral head fracture and posterior wall acetabular fracture. She was treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the acetabulum, as well as bipolar hemiarthroplasty for treatment of her femoral head fracture. At her 18-month follow-up visit, the patient was doing well and had no complaints.

BACKGROUND: Degloving of the sole of the foot is a rare and serious injury because the heel pad cannot be replaced by similar tissue. The management is challenging and only a few cases have been reported with different treatment regimens.
METHODS: Here, we report on a 46-year-old female patient with complex foot trauma consisting of complete avulsion of the heel pad at the hindfoot and a soft tissue defect at the posterior aspect of the heel accompanied by rupture of the anterior tibial tendon and fractures of the talus, calcaneus and midfoot. The sole of the foot was fixed to the calcaneus w

BACKGROUND: Traditional methods for minimally invasive internal fixation (MIIF) of calcaneal fractures require extensive intraoperative fluoroscopy, and fracture recovery is usually not ideal. We developed a new surgical procedure using digital surgical simulation and constructed a patient-specific instrument (PSI) for calcaneal fracture that we used during the operation. This study investigated whether PSI-assisted MIIF of calcaneal fracture enables rapid and accurate execution of the preoperative plan.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients with Sanders type III or IV fresh calcaneal

CASE: A 62-year-old woman sustained a bicondylar proximal tibial fracture. She had a deep infection after open reduction and internal fixation resulting in massive metaphyseal bone loss. Because only subchondral bone was left, the cavity was filled with cement after pins were used to support the proximal tibia. Then, a hinged knee-spanning external fixator (EF) was applied. After the removal of the EF, the patient was almost pain free and tolerated full weight-bearing, and no further surgeries were needed.
CONCLUSION: The cemented wires technique proved to be a good short-term and possibly a

BACKGROUND: Intra-operative image acquisition can be obtained indirectly (via verbal request to a technician) or directly (executed at the tableside, by a surgeon stepping on a foot pedal). Direct image acquisition could reduce the exposure time and thus the risk of radiation damage. The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to compare direct surgeon-controlled fluoroscopy with indirect technician-operated fluoroscopy during internal fixation of a hip fracture.
METHODS: From March 5, 2014 to August 19, 2015, 100 patients who had sustained a hip fracture that required internal fixation w

Mandible is one of the commonly fractured bone in children during maxillofacial trauma. These factures are usually managed conservatively but sometimes require open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Management of mandibular fracture in children is influenced by the presence of developing permanent tooth buds, minimal anchorage from primary teeth and facial growth and development. Although, there have been technical and material advancements with ORIF, it is still associated with complications related to growth and damage to developing teeth. This case report describes a case of mandibula
