In an uncertain environment, probabilities are key to predicting future events and making adaptive choices. However, little is known about how humans learn such probabilities and where and how they are encoded in the brain, especially when they concern more than two outcomes. During functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), young adults learned the probabilities of uncertain stimuli through repetitive sampling. Stimuli represented payoffs and participants had to predict their occurrence to maximize their earnings. Choices indicated loss and risk aversion but unbiased estimation of probabil

The aim of this study was to improve the neuropathologic recognition and provide criteria for the pathological diagnosis in the neurodegenerative diseases grouped as frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD); revised criteria are proposed. Recent advances in molecular genetics, biochemistry, and neuropathology of FTLD prompted the Midwest Consortium for Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration and experts at other centers to review and revise the existing neuropathologic diagnostic criteria for FTLD. The proposed criteria for FTLD are based on existing criteria, which include the tauopathies [FTLD wit

BACKGROUND: Frontotemporal dementia accounts for up to 20% of cases of dementia in the presenium, yet remains poorly recognised. Diagnostic criteria have been devised to aid clinical diagnosis.
AIMS: To provide an overview of clinical and pathological characteristics of frontotemporal dementia and its nosological status.
METHODS: The review summarises consensus diagnostic criteria for frontotemporal dementia and draws on the authors' clinical experience of 300 frontotemporal dementia cases, and pathological experience of 50 autopsied cases.
RESULTS: Frontotemporal dementia is characterised

Abundant cytoplasmic inclusions consisting of aggregated hyperphosphorylated protein tau are a characteristic pathological observation in several neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Pick's disease, frontotemporal dementia, cortico-basal degeneration and progressive supranuclear palsy. The recent finding that mutations in the tau gene are responsible for frontotemporal dementia and parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP-17) has provided convincing evidence that tau protein plays a key role in neurodegeneration. In the short period since the identification of pathogenic

A case of frontotemporal intracerebral schwannoma in a 16-year-old girl with epilepsy and progressive hemiparesis of 3 years' duration is described. The histologic diagnosis and possible sites of origin are discussed. In addition, five previously reported cases of supratentorial intracerebral schwannoma are discussed. All of the patients reviewed presented with epilepsy early in life, and there was no association with neurofibromatosis.

A 76-year-old woman with about a 13-month history of bradykinesia, gait disturbance and resting tremor of right upper extremity was referred to Nuclear Medicine Department. A PET-CT with 229 MBq of F FP-CIT was performed to diagnose suspected early Parkinson's disease (PD). The PET-CT showed a mass lesion with highly intense focal dopamine transporter uptake in the right frontal lobe. A subsequent brain magnetic resonance image also showed a mass in the right frontal lobe demonstrating homogeneous enhancement and extensive surrounding edema, highly suggestive of a brain tumor.

The frontal pole is implicated in humans in whether to exploit resources versus explore alternatives. Effective connectivity, functional connectivity, and tractography were measured between six human frontal pole regions and for comparison 13 dorsolateral and dorsal prefrontal cortex regions, and the 360 cortical regions in the Human Connectome Project Multi-modal-parcellation atlas in 171 HCP participants. The frontal pole regions have effective connectivity with Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex regions, the Dorsal Prefrontal Cortex, both implicated in working memory; and with the orbitofrontal

Extensive neuroimaging literature suggests that understanding others' thoughts and emotions engages a wide network encompassing parietal, temporal and medial frontal brain areas. However, the causal role played by these regions in social inferential abilities is still unclear. Moreover very little is known about theory of mind deficits in brain tumours and whether potential anatomical substrates are comparable to those identified in functional MRI literature. This study evaluated the performance of 105 tumour patients, before and immediately after brain surgery, on a cartoon-based non-verbal t

When in flight, cosmonauts are to resolve problems in the conditions of deterministic and stochastic disturbances. To a considerable degree successful problem resolution is dependent on interactions of the parietofrontal and parietooccipital areas of the right and left cortexes. The paper illustrates the relationship between the baseline state according to the Luscher test, productivity indices of activities involving two areas of the cortex, and spatial synchronization of their bio-potentials.

This study aimed to answer the questions 'What are the neural networks and mechanisms involved in visual and kinesthetic motor imagery?', an … or imagery. This study revealed that visual motor imagery elicited stronger activation in the right frontal lobe, whereas kinesthetic motor imagery resulted in greater activation in the left frontal lobe. It seems that kinesthetic motor imagery activates the primary somatosensory cortex (BA 2), the secondary somatosensory cortex (BA 5 and 7), and the temporal …

Twenty-six patients presented with slowly progressive focal neurologic symptoms that conformed clinically to one of three categories: asphasia, perceptuomotor dysfunction, or neuropsychiatric dysfunction. Of 12 patients with progressive aphasia, seven were dysfluent and five were fluent. Nine patients had progressive perceptuomotor impairment due to bilateral parietal lobe atrophy, which also included frontal lobe signs in seven patients and occipital lobe signs in three patients. The right hemisphere was more severely involved in five patients and the left hemisphere in four. Five patients ha…

OBJECTIVE: Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) was applied in this study to detect metabolite changes in the brain of post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) and normal volunteers. The levels of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and creatinine (Cr) and in the frontal lobe, hippocampus and cingulate gyrus were measured to distinguish patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) and normal control group (NC). The relationship between them and cognitive function was explored and a critical value of the metabolite ratio was predicted. This study may serve as a reference for the diagnosi…

Reward-based decision-making has been found to activate several brain areas, including the ventrolateral prefrontal lobe, orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, ventral striatum, and mesolimbic dopaminergic system. In this study, we observed brain areas activated under three degrees of uncertainty in a reward-based decision-making task (certain, risky, and ambiguous). The tasks were presented using a brain function audiovisual stimulation system. We conducted brain scans of 15 healthy volunteers using a 3.0T magnetic resonance scanner. We used SPM8 to analyze the location and intensi…
