Pre-operative effects of the administration of systemic corticosteroids combined with antibiotics on a lobular capillary hemangioma in the nasal cavity.

Lobular capillary hemangiomas (LCHs), also known as pyogenic granulomas, are benign, rapidly growing hemorrhagic lesions that usually develop in the oral or nasal cavities. In adults, LCHs occur in <5% of all pregnant women. A 30-year-old woman presented with a 4-month history of right-sided nasal obstruction and recurrent epistaxis 2 months post-partum. A fragile, pink-red lobulated tumor existed in the anterior portion of the right inferior turbinate; the biopsy revealed a LCH. Although the patient declined surgery using an external approach, treatment with systemic corticosteroids combined

[Hepatic brucelloma: 2 cases and a review of the literature].

We report two new cases of hepatic brucelloma in addition to the 22 previously reported cases in the literature. Our analysis of these cases reveals certain characteristics. Hepatic brucelloma is a rare localization that follows previously undetected acute brucellosis. Brucelloma is a result of caseification of a granulomatous reaction induced by persistent Brucella in macrophages. Clinical manifestations can mimic malignant liver tumors or pyogenic, amebic liver abscess. Diagnosis is based on the association of characteristic imaging features (central calcification and peripheral necrotic are

Clinical and immunological aspects of hyper-IgM syndrome.

Eight patients with Hyper-IgM syndrome were subjected to clinical and immunological evaluation. There were seven males and one female. All the patients had recurrent pyogenic infections; one had lymphoid hyperplasia with centrally necrotic granulomas, and one had gingivitis with neutropenia. Isohemagglutinin titers were either high or normal in all the patients and five had group 0 blood. The percentage of IgM-bearing cells were normal in five patients. The percentage of T cells were normal in all the patients, helper T cells were decreased in two patients, and suppressor T cells were increase

A rare unilateral case of ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid.

PURPOSE: Ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is known to be rapidly progressive in younger patients and affects both eyes. We are aware of only one other reported case of unilateral ocular MMP. The case presented in this study is unique in that it demonstrates genuinely unilateral ocular MMP in a younger patient. METHODS: We report a case of a 50-year-old man who presented with a 3-month history of left eye redness, irritation, and mild discharge. He also suffered from mouth ulcers, skin lesions, and recurrent nose bleeds secondary to nasal mucosal lesions. RESULTS: Examination revealed

A Rare Case of Nasal Lobular Capillary Hemangioma Centered at the Pyriform Aperture.

We present the rare case of a nasal lobular capillary hemangioma with bony erosion atypically localized to the left piriform aperture. This fast-growing lesion caused both physical and emotional distress due to recurrent epistaxis and prominent esthetic deformity evidenced by a large nasal growth. While the final diagnosis was benign, the clinical and radiological findings caused concern. This case serves as a reminder that prompt referral, work-up, and diagnosis are essential to optimize patient care.

Lobular capillary haemangioma of the nasal vestibule: a rare entity.

The authors report a case of an 8-year-old boy with lobular capillary haemangioma (LCH) of the nasal vestibule presenting with nasal blockage, nasal discharge and epistaxis. LCH of the nasal vestibule is rarely reported in the English literature, and the authors feel that it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of lesion of the nasal vestibule. Unnecessary investigations could be avoided if its diagnosis is considered, especially in children.

Histopathological analysis of biopsies of "peri-implant inflammatory lesions." Everything is not what it seems.

BACKGROUND: Peri-implantitis is the inflammatory process, which most commonly affects the therapy with dental implants. However, there are other reactive and neoplastic entities, mainly benign but also malignant, which also take place in the peri-implant mucosa. There is little information about the histopathological analysis of these peri-implant inflammatory diseases. PURPOSE: To analyze the histopathological diagnosis of biopsies located in the peri-implant mucosa that showed an inflammatory clinical appearance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have made a retrospective study of 111 peri-implant

Assessment of reactive gingival lesions of oral cavity: A histopathological study.

BACKGROUND: In the literature, many studies were attempted to analyze the distribution of oral reactive lesions in terms of age, gender and location. However, very few studies have focused on the detailed histopathological features of these reactive lesions of oral cavity. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to document the occurrence, distribution and various histopathological features of reactive gingival lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a retrospective archival review of reactive gingival lesions of oral cavity such as irritational fibroma (IF), inflammatory gingival hyperplasi

[Differential pathomorphologic diagnosis of brucellosis in hares].

The examination comprised 656 cases of brucellosis, 208 cases of pseudotuberculosis, 31 cases of yersiniosis, 13 cases of tularemia and 120 cases of pasteurellosis. In brucellosis, changes in liver, spleen and sexual organs prevailed. The macroscopy of the changes was typical. A histiocytic granuloma of tuberculoid type was found by histological examination. Owing to caryolysis, the central necrosis of granulomata contained a conspicuously small amount of nuclear detritus, and big cells of Langhans type were found in the histiocytic layer. A layer of round-cell elements constantly occurred on

[Pott's disease, surgical case series and literature review].

BACKGROUND: Osteoarticular tuberculosis represents 9-20% of extrapulmonary forms and spinal tuberculosis is its most common form. CLINICAL CASES: We present three cases of tuberculous spondylitis in patients aged 22, 36 and 68 years, with 8, 6 and 6 months of evolution and with involvement of L5-S1, T7-T8 and T5-T6, respectively. The two younger patients had disc involvement, and in the first case a pyogenic abscess was initially suspected. Local pain was the initial symptom and the 2 older patients developed inability to walk and urinary and fecal incontinence. The patients received a comple

Nail unit tumors: a study of 234 patients in the dermatology department of the "Dr Manuel Gea González" General Hospital in Mexico City.

BACKGROUND: The frequency of nail unit tumors is not well known because they are often misdiagnosed, and the clinical appearance of benign and malignant tumors is not characteristic. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 234 patients from the dermatology department of a general hospital in Mexico City were included in this study, from January 1982 to November 2006. RESULTS: The tumors most frequently diagnosed were fibrous tumors (29.05%), osteocartilaginous tumors (21.79%), and myxoid pseudocysts (11.96%). Malignant melanoma occupied the fourth place (9.82%), and the second most frequent maligna

Acquired digital periungual fibrokeratoma in a 36-year-old male: case report and an update.

Acquired digital fibrokeratoma (ADFK) is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor often presenting as a small, firm, hyperkeratotic lesion, typically located in the periungual or subungual regions of the digits. Though benign, ADFK can lead to significant functional or cosmetic issues and may be mistaken for more serious conditions such as squamous cell carcinoma or pyogenic granuloma. We report the case of a 36-year-old male with a 3- to 4‑year history of a progressively enlarging periungual tumor leading to nail deformity and mild pressure effects on the underlying bone. The patient's history include

[Superficial extraskeletal osteosarcoma. Case report].

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant bone neoplasm in young people. Presentation in non-bone tissues comprises 2 to 5% of all osteosarcomas and less than 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. On rare occasions it presents as a superficial tumor, making it necessary to make a differential diagnosis with benign entities, such as pyogenic granuloma ossificans, and malignant neoplasms, with sarcomatoid differentiation such as carcinosarcoma and dedifferentiated melanoma. Accurate diagnosis requires correlation of the histological, macroscopic and imaging characteristics of the n

Reactive bite-related tongue lesions in cognitively impaired epilepsy patients: A report of two cases.

AIM: Tongue bites frequently occur during seizures in epilepsy patients. We report two cases of cognitively impaired Lennox-Gastaut syndrome patients with reactive lesions on the tongues. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Case 1 was a 30-year-old man whose chief complaint was mouth pain. Local finding was a small bean-sized pedunculated mass on the tongue, histopathologically diagnosed as inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia. Case 2 was a 45-year-old man whose chief complaint was bleeding from the mouth. His clinical finding was blood loss anemia. Local finding was a 20-mm-diameter pedunculated mass on the ton
