The Effects of Pop-up Harm Minimisation Messages on Electronic Gaming Machine Gambling Behaviour in New Zealand.

In New Zealand a simple pop-up message feature that provides gambling session information and forces a break in play is mandatory on all electronic gaming machines in all venues (EGMs). Previous research has demonstrated small effects of more sophisticated pop-up messages tested predominantly in laboratory environments. The present research examined gambler engagement with and views on the New Zealand pop-up messages and on the relationship between pop-up messages and EGM expenditure. A sample of gamblers was recruited at casino and non-casino (pub) EGM venues. Most participants were aware of

In their own words: Content analysis of pathways to recovery among individuals with the lived experience of homelessness and alcohol use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are more prevalent among homeless individuals than in the general population, and homeless individuals are disproportionately affected by alcohol-related morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, abstinence-based approaches are neither desirable to nor highly effective for most members of this population. Recent research has indicated that homeless people aspire to clinically significant recovery goals beyond alcohol abstinence, including alcohol harm reduction and quality-of-life improvement. However, no research has documented this population's preferre…

Pharmaceutical approaches of binge drinking.

Binge Drinking (BD) is often considered to be recurrent alcohol abuse amongst adolescents and young adults. However, the close link between adolescence and impulsivity has led many authors to define BD as intoxication-seeking behaviour. Medications may sometimes be justified because of the major short-term and long-term risks that underlie the most severe BD-related behaviours. The most common consequences in the long run are the occurrence of alcohol dependence, psycho- and neurodevelopmental disruptions and alcohol liver disease. To understand the specificities of BD among other forms of alc

Gender influences in tobacco use and cessation interventions.

Smoking rates among and between men and women are in large part a reflection of the influence of gender and its intersections with other social factors including ethnicity, age, and social class that influence tobacco use and, ultimately, tobacco reduction and cessation. In this article, opportunities for developing and delivering gender-sensitive (programs addressing gender) and gender-specific (programs designed for men or women) interventions in the context of tobacco dependence treatment are discussed.

Temperament and character in patients with bipolar II disorder and recurrent brief depression.

OBJECTIVES: We compared the temperament and character profiles of 21 patients with bipolar II disorder, 40 patients with recurrent brief depression (RBD; at least monthly depressive episodes meeting the diagnostic criteria for major depressive episode except for duration that is less than 2 weeks, typically 2-3 days, without fixed relation to menstrual cycle) of which 21 had no history of hypomania and 19 had experienced hypomanic episodes, and 21 age- and sex-matched controls. METHODS: Assessments included the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale, Hypomania Checklist, and Temperament an

Do no more harm: the psychological stress of the medical examination for alleged child sexual abuse.

AIM: Currently, there is some controversy that the medical examination following allegations of child sexual abuse may further traumatise the child. Access for children to appropriate care may be hindered if decisions about referral are influenced by personal beliefs, rather than by recognition of the potential health and psychological benefits of the assessment. We aimed to study the expectations and emotional responses of children and their parents to the medical examination. METHODS: We conducted a prospective quantitative and qualitative study at the Children's Hospital at Westmead. Parti

Moving beyond an exclusive focus on harm avoidance in obsessive compulsive disorder: considering the role of incompleteness.

Cognitive-behavioral conceptualizations of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) have predominantly viewed compulsions as being motivated by harm avoidance. However, sensations of things being incomplete or not "just right" may also underlie compulsions in OCD. Preliminary research suggests that distinguishing between harm avoidance and incompleteness in OCD may have practical utility, but the research on this topic is very limited to date. The current study further addressed the role of incompleteness in OCD. A confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence for harm avoidance and incompleteness

Reducing Stigma and Enhancing Care for People Who Use Alcohol.

Alcohol use is common and associated with varying degrees of harm. Heavy alcohol use can lead to the development of an alcohol use disorder (AUD). The stigma and discrimination that people with AUD often face can act as barriers to seeking clinical services and may negatively impact the quality of care they receive. This paper outlines best practices for working with people who use alcohol, emphasizing the importance of addressing stigma in caring for and communicating with clients. Written from a harm-reduction perspective, it highlights the significance of client-driven goal setting and auto

Sustainable Healthcare Practices in Pediatric Anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare accounts for 4%-5% of global CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions, of which hospitals form a considerable component. Identifying evidence-based targets for carbon reduction in pediatric anesthesia can help guide meaningful reductions in healthcare-related environmental harm. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted integrating published data on carbon emissions associated with anesthetic agents, perioperative workflows, waste generation, and hospital energy systems. Quantitative CO2e estimates were incorporated when available. RESULTS: Preoperative strategies with measurab

Structured diagnostic assessment and depot fluphenazine treatment of multiple suicide attempters in the emergency department.

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of two doses of monthly intramuscular (i.m.) injections of fluphenazine decanoate in reducing self-harm behaviours in outpatients with histories of multiple suicide attempts. Fifty-eight patients who presented to a psychiatric emergency service after an attempted suicide and who had histories of multiple suicide attempts, were randomized to receive monthly i.m. injections of fluphenazine decanoate. Thirty patients received monthly 12.5 mg ('low' dose), and 28 patients received monthly 1.5 mg ('ultra low' dose) under double-blind conditions. DSM

Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) Use and Pregnancy II: Perinatal Outcomes Following ENDS Use During Pregnancy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes following electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use during pregnancy, and considers whether there are sufficient data to support ENDS as a harm reduction approach during pregnancy. RECENT FINDINGS: Seven papers assessed perinatal outcomes following ENDS use during pregnancy. There was evidence that ENDS use was associated with increased risk for some adverse perinatal outcomes (e.g., small for gestational age). However, the repeated use of data sets, insufficient data (e.g., timing of ENDS use, type of ENDS pr…

Screening and Treatment for Co-occurring Gambling and Substance Use: A Scoping Review.

There is a high prevalence of gambling harms co-occurring with substance use harms. Where harms are co-occurring, they may be experienced as more severe. However, there is little evidence that services are systematically screening for such co-occurring harms in treatment-seeking populations. Furthermore, treatment modalities remain relatively under-developed, with treatment usually addressing only one source of harm. This scoping review looks at the current literature on screening and therapeutic interventions for co-occurring gambling and substance use harms to understand how co-occurring harm

Population attributable risk of factors associated with the repetition of self-harm behaviour in young people presenting to clinical services: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The repetition of hospital-treated self-harm by young people is common. However, little work has summarised the modifiable factors associated with this. A thorough understanding of those factors most strongly associated with repetition could guide the development of relevant clinical interventions. We systematically reviewed four databases (EMBASE, Medline, PubMed and PsycINFO) until 15 April 2016 to identify all observational studies of factors for the repetition of self-harm or suicide reattempts (together referred to as 'self-harm behaviour') in young people. We quantified the magnitude of

Breastfeeding with HIV: An Evidence-Based Case for New Policy.

To help eliminate perinatal HIV transmission, the US Department of Health and Human Services recommends against breastfeeding for women living with HIV, regardless of viral load or combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) status. However, cART radically improves HIV prognosis and virtually eliminates perinatal transmission, and breastfeeding's health benefits are well-established. In this setting, pregnancy is increasing among American women with HIV, and a harm reduction approach to those who breastfeed despite extensive counseling is suggested. We assess the evidence and ethical justification …

Staying safe from hepatitis C: engaging with multiple priorities.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant global public health problem. In developed countries, 90% of new infections occur among people who inject drugs (PWID), with seroprevalence increasing rapidly among new injectors. Staying Safe is an international, qualitative, social research project, the aim of which is to draw on the experiences of long-term PWID to inform a new generation of HCV prevention strategies. The Sydney project team employed life history interviews and computer-generated timelines to elicit detailed data about unexposed participants' (n =13) injecting practices, ci

Commentary on Furr-Holden et al. : As opioid overdose deaths accelerate among Black Americans, COVID-19 widens inequities-a critical need to invest in community-based approaches.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated racial inequities in fatal opioid overdoses affecting Black Americans. To reduce overdose rates among Black Americans, funding and policy efforts should prioritize local strategies that build community trust, such as grassroots organizations already engaged in outreach, advocacy, and harm reduction services.
