A nonpsychotropic cannabinoid, HU-211, has cerebroprotective effects after closed head injury in the rat.

HU-211 is a synthetic, nonpsychotropic cannabinoid, which has been shown to act as a noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist. The cerebroprotective effects of this compound were assessed in a model of closed head injury in rats. Head trauma (HT) was induced in ether-anesthetized rats by a weight-drop device; recovery was followed up to 48 h. The clinical status of the rats was evaluated at 1, 24, and 48 h after injury, and the extent of edema formation was determined by specific gravity (SG) and water content measurements at 24 or 48 h. The integrity of the blood-brain b

Mild Jugular Compression Collar Ameliorated Changes in Brain Activation of Working Memory after One Soccer Season in Female High School Athletes.

Recent neuroimaging studies have suggested that repetitive subconcussive head impacts, even after only one sport season, may lead to pre- to post-season structural and functional alterations in male high school football athletes. However, data on female athletes are limited. In the current investigation, we aimed to (1) assess the longitudinal pre- to post-season changes in functional MRI (fMRI) of working memory and working memory performance, (2) quantify the association between the pre- to post-season change in fMRI of working memory and the exposure to head impact and working memory perfor

E-bikes and E-scooters are not bicycles or motorcycles: The case for a dedicated trauma registry mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Powered micromobility devices (PMDs), including electric scooters (e-scooters) and electric bicycles (e-bikes), can operate at speeds approaching those of low-speed motorcycles. Yet PMDs are treated as low-energy mechanisms in trauma surveillance systems and are not classified as distinct mechanisms of injury. Although prior studies report higher head injury rates in PMD crashes than bicycle crashes, injury severity and health care utilization relative to motorcycle crashes are not known. We hypothesized that e-scooter and e-bike crashes demonstrate distinct injury and resource uti

The application of artificial intelligence in glaucoma diagnosis and prediction.

Artificial intelligence is a multidisciplinary and collaborative science, the ability of deep learning for image feature extraction and processing gives it a unique advantage in dealing with problems in ophthalmology. The deep learning system can assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing characteristic fundus lesions in glaucoma, such as retinal nerve fiber layer defects, optic nerve head damage, optic disc hemorrhage, etc. Early detection of these lesions can help delay structural damage, protect visual function, and reduce visual field damage. The development of deep learning led to the emergenc

Isolated Internuclear Ophthalmoplegia as an Embolic Complication of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.

An 83-year-old male developed horizontal diplopia immediately following elective transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). On right gaze, left eye adduction was impaired while there was horizontal nystagmus of the abducting right eye, representative of internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO). The remainder of the neurological examination was normal. Computer tomography (CT) imaging of the brain and CT angiogram of the head and neck were normal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain showed five small foci of restricted diffusion affecting both the anterior and posterior ci

Postinjury thromboprophylaxis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In trauma patients, pulmonary embolism occurs in up to 4% of cases and carries a mortality of 20-50%. The incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) varies from 5 to 63% depending on patients' risk factors, modality of prophylaxis, and methods of detection. For these reasons, trauma patients require adequate DVT prophylaxis. RECENT FINDINGS: Spinal fracture or cord injury patients are at particular risk. Increasing injury severity, head injury, older age, lower limb injuries, and obesity are other risk factors. The current standard of care for DVT prophylaxis is enoxaparin (a

Hip replacement arthroplasty in rheumatoid arthritis.

Numerous factors conspire to make hip replacement arthroplasty for rheumatoid arthritis different from the same operation in osteo-arthritis. Patients are frequently younger, arousing fears that the patient will outlive the prosthesis. However this factor is more than counterbalanced by the constraints imposed by the disease in other joints: polyarticular involvement usually protects the hip arthroplasty from weight-bearing stress thus prolonging its life. Protrusio acetabuli, uncommon in osteo-arthritis is the commonest presentation in rheumatoid arthritis because of the concentric cartilage

A prediction-based framework for developing integrated pedestrian safety systems under high-risk scenarios.

Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users and remain a primary focus of intelligent vehicle safety. In high-risk scenarios where avoidance is physically infeasible, vehicles' front-end structural designs (e.g., active hoods) play a crucial role in injury mitigation. However, existing systems typically rely on contact-based sensors, which leave extremely short time for device deployment. To address this challenge, this study proposes a prediction-based integrated pedestrian safety framework. We constructed a vehicle-perspective, human-in-the-loop virtual reality dataset specifically

All-terrain vehicle use related fracture rates, patterns, and associations from 2002 to 2015 in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Since their introduction to USA markets in the late 20th century, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have been a significant source of trauma. Many paediatric studies have demonstrated the disproportionate rate in which minors are affected by ATV-related trauma, but no studies have been performed on a large sample size spanning all age and geographic ranges. This study is the first to analyze ATV-related fracture rates, patterns, and associated risks across all ages nationwide. METHODS & STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried for ATV-

A novel measurement method to estimate the risk of transmitting airborne diseases during dental treatments.

OBJECTIVE: Aerosol-generating treatments in dental practice carry the risk of releasing potentially infectious body fluids (PIBF), resulting in possible disease transmission from one patient to others and to the dental staff. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has revealed the urgent need to provide precise and comprehensible safety measures for all kinds of diseases. Dentists and dental staff are more exposed to potentially infectious aerosols than the general population. However, there is no established method to quantify the infectivity of aerosols and splatter as encountered by dentists. This study p

The Merete BioBall system in hip revision surgery: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Modular hip arthroplasty is widely recognized in hip surgery; nevertheless, despite advances in prosthetic design, the incidence of hip revision surgery is increasing. In these procedures, a modular adapter that engages the femoral stem and the modular femoral head could be useful in order to protect the neck-head junction and restore preoperative biomechanics and soft tissue tension when the femoral or acetabular component should be retained. The Merete™ BioBall™ system (Merete Medical, Berlin, Germany) could fill this need. However the literature regarding this device is sparse,
