Validation of photoplethysmography-derived short-term heart rate variability using a wearable device.

Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects cardiac autonomic function and cardiovascular health. While electrocardiography (ECG) remains the gold standard for HRV assessment, photoplethysmography (PPG)-based wearables offer an alternative for monitoring. This study aimed to validate the wrist-worn PPG device Bora band® for short-term HRV assessment against standard ECG and to characterize domain-specific agreement patterns. In this prospective, single-center observational study, 66 participants in sinus rhythm underwent simultaneous high-resolution 12-lead ECG and wrist-based PPG recording for 5 mi…

Short-term effects of weight-loading on heart rate variability in obese adults.

Weight-loading reduces body fat, but its effects on cardiac autonomic modulation remain unclear. We examined heart rate variability (HRV) during free-living weight-loading in adults with class I obesity. Fifty-one participants (27 females) were randomized to wear a heavy (11% of body weight) or a light vest (1%) for 8 h/day for 15 days. Twenty-four-hour ECG recordings were obtained before and on day 15. Heart rate (HR), relative HR reserve (%HRR), and time- and frequency-domain HRV indices were analyzed across four predefined periods: morning (rest), afternoon (vest-usage), evening, and night.…

Heart Rate Supports Accelerometry as a Reliable Predictor of Energy Expenditure in Bats.

Measuring the energetic cost of behavior is essential for understanding decision-making in wild animals. This is particularly true for bats … To test whether energy expenditure is predicted by acceleration-based movement in bats, we deployed heart rate loggers alongside GPS with tri-axial accelerometers on free-ranging greater spear-nosed bats (Phyllostomus hastatus) in Panamá. We hypothesized that heart rate would positively reflect increases in Vectorial Dynamic Body Acceleration (VeDBA), a comm …

Researching impaired heart rate recovery index in patients who have had COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: Heart rate recovery index (HRRI) occurs as a result of vagal reactivation and sympathetic retraction and is an independent risk factor used to assess autonomic nervous system (ANS) function and to determine prognosis in cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. It has been shown in various studies that cardiac autonomic dysfunction due to COVID-19 can occur. The aim of our study is to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 on ANS functions in people who have had this disease with HRRI. METHODS: In this prospective and observational study, patients proven to have had COVID by molecul…

The circadian rhythm of heart rate variability in academic teachers with anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVES: The academic teachers are increasingly diagnosed with anxiety disorders, which results from a high level of work-related stress. These disorders can be both an independent risk factor of many somatic conditions and the cause of complications of various organic disorders leading to poor prognosis. The purpose of this study is to compare the heart rate variability (HRV) recorded both during the day and at night in the academic teachers with anxiety disorders and healthy individuals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 38 academic teachers - consecutive outpatients with …

The Relationship Between Heart Rate Variability and Interoception in Anorexia Nervosa Spectrum Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Restrictive eating disorders are characterized by abnormalities in both HRV and interoception, yet the extent to which transient physiological changes are related to interoceptive sensibility in this population remains unclear. The present study examines the association between HRV and interoceptive sensibility among individuals with anorexia nervosa and atypical anorexia (i.e., Anorexia Nervosa Spectrum Disorders) in real-time using a combination of biosensor and ecological momentary assessment data. METHOD: Seventy-five adults with Anorexia Nervosa Spectrum Disorders and current

Premature ventricular complexes increase with heart rate in patients with mitral valve prolapse.

BACKGROUND: Patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) are at risk of ventricular arrhythmias (VAs), ranging from premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) to life-threatening VAs. The association between PVC burden and heart rate in patients with MVP is not known. We aimed to identify the association between PVC burden and heart rate in patients with MVP. METHODS: In this this cross-sectional ambispective case control study we included MVP patients with available Holter monitorings. We defined PVC profiles as fast-heart-rate-dependent-PVC (F-HR-PVC) in case of positive correlation with heart rat…

Scopolamine's Anticholinergic Effects on EEG Spectral, Aperiodic, Complexity, Microstates, and Heart Rate Variability.

OBJECTIVE: Scopolamine disrupts cholinergic mechanisms via nonspecific muscarinic antagonism. Centrally, excitatory neocortical innervations are antagonised causing spectral electroencephalography (EEG) changes and cognitive impairment. Peripherally, parasympathetic control of heart rate variability (HRV) is disrupted, although acute HRV effects of scopolamine are not well-defined. METHODS: Forty adults with depression received scopolamine hydrobromide (N = 24, 4-6 μg/kg) or glycopyrronium bromide (N = 16, 4-6 μg/kg) infusions. Twelve healthy adults received scopolamine (4-6 μg/kg) infusions.…

Adverse childhood experiences and diurnal cortisol pattern and heart rate variability in adults.

Dysregulation of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis) and of the autonomic nervous system may link stress throughout the life course with poorer health. This study aims to investigate whether multiple adverse childhood experiences have a long-term impact on markers of these systems - cortisol secretion and heart rate variability - in adulthood. Data were from the Whitehall II cohort study. Fourteen adversities, collected retrospectively in midlife, were considered. Outcomes were total amount of cortisol secretion during the day (area under the curve [AUC]), cortisol awakening respons…

Brain activation and heart rate variability as markers of autonomic function under stress.

Efficient brain-heart interactions, mediated by the central autonomic network (CAN), are crucial in regulating physiological and psychological stress. The ability of the autonomic nervous system to adapt to stress predicts resilience to cardiovascular, anxiety, and mood disorders. Since the neural dynamics underlying brain-heart interactions remain poorly understood, this study investigated brain activation and heart rate variability (HRV) during stress and relaxation. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and peripheral heart rate assessment were used to assess brain-heart coupling dur…

Heart rate recovery after the 6-min walk test in people with bronchiectasis.

BACKGROUND: The cardiac autonomic response to exercise and during recovery has been poorly explored in bronchiectasis. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted in adults with bronchiectasis. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected at baseline and after 12 months of follow-up. The heart rate recovery after the first (HRR1) and second minute (HRR2) of recovery in the six-min walk test (6MWT) was estimated in both assessments. Adjusted regression models were used to identify predictors of a delayed HRR1 (HRR1≤14). RESULTS: 104 participants with a mean±sd age of 64±13 years and most…

The role of perseverative cognition and heart rate variability in high trait anxiety.

Anxiety is increasingly understood as a multidimensional phenomenon, shaped by the interaction of cognitive, emotional, and physiological processes. Dysregulation within these systems is thought to contribute both to the onset and to the persistence of anxious symptoms. Among cognitive factors, worry and rumination have been identified as key vulnerabilities, as they amplify physiological arousal and disrupt autonomic regulation. Heart rate variability (HRV), a robust index of autonomic flexibility, has been consistently linked to emotion regulation, with lower HRV reflecting greater susceptib…

Heart Rate Variability and Peripheral Oxygen Saturation Levels in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive respiratory disorder characterized by persistent airflow limitation, significantly impacting morbidity and mortality worldwide. The disease is often associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, which can adversely affect cardiac function and overall prognosis. This study investigates the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV), a non-invasive marker of autonomic regulation, and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels across different stages of COPD. The relevance of autonomic dysfunction in clinical pract…

Heart Rate Index-An Alternative Exercise-Based Equation for Estimating Peak VO 2.

PURPOSE: Heart rate (HR)-derived variables (HR reserve [HR peak  - HR rest ], chronotropic indices [attenuated HR response to exercise], HR recovery [attenuated HR response to exercise recovery], and peak HR index [HR peak /HR rest ]) together with peak oxygen uptake (VO 2peak ) are potential prognostic variables for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. However, heart rate index (HRI) has not been established as a surrogate for VO 2peak , whether measured (Meas) or estimated (Est), during cycle ergometry (CE) and/or treadmill testing (TT). METHODS: HR-derived prognostic variables to assess…

Implementation of Wearable Technology for Remote Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback in Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Cardiovascular diseases pose a significant threat to global health, and cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has become a critical component of patient care. Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRVB) is a non-invasive approach that helps modulate the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) through Resonance Frequency (RF) breathing, supporting CR for cardiovascular patients. However, traditional HRVB techniques rely heavily on manual RF selection and face-to-face guidance, limiting their widespread application, particularly in home-based CR. To address these limitations, we propose a remote human-computer colla…

Cold Water Immersion, Heart Rate Variability and Post-Exercise Recovery: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Physiological and psychological recovery, i.e., the balance between fatigue/stress and recovery and evaluated through heart rate variability (HRV), is essential for the good performance of athletes in all their activities. Cold water immersion (CWI) has been shown to reduce the negative effects of fatigue/stress by inducing physiological and biochemical changes that promote faster recovery. This study aims to analyze the scientific literature on the effects of CWI on post-exercise recovery, as measured by HRV in athletes. METHODS: A systematic review of randomized clinical trial…

Fetal heart rate variability in relation to maternal physical activity and metabolic health.

Physical activity (PA) during pregnancy may have a positive effect on the fetal cardiac maturation which is reflected in a decreasing resting heart rate and increasing heart rate variability (HRV). Different types of PA, for example during leisure or work time, have differential effects on HRV; however, this relationship has not yet been investigated in pregnancy. In our work, we related different types of PA during pregnancy with maternal and fetal HRV. We assessed the levels of PA in 95 pregnant women between 28 and 32 weeks of gestational age using the Baecke Physical Activity Questionnaire…

Heart rate control strategies in patients on veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support.

BACKGROUND: Despite veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) support, hypoxemia may persist due to venous shunting past the ECMO circuit into diseased lungs. Heart rate (HR) control therapy in patients with elevated cardiac output (CO) is one strategy to improve the ratio of ECMO flow to CO and reduce shunting. METHODS: This retrospective study examined VV-ECMO patients between June 2019 and June 2023 that received ⩾1 HR control agent within 10 days post-cannulation. Efficacy outcomes included trends in hemodynamics, oxygenation, and ventilator and ECMO parameters within 72 h…

The Feasibility of Ambulatory Heart Rate Variability Monitoring in Non-Suicidal Self-Injury.

The polyvagal theory proposes that the autonomic nervous system influences affective systems and top-down emotional regulation. Vagal tone, as indexed by heart rate variability (HRV), is a measure of emotion regulation capacity. It is possible that non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) occurs at times of low vagal tone and that NSSI may increase it. Little is known about the feasibility of collecting ambulatory HRV data in the context of NSSI. This prospective observational study examined the feasibility of ambulatory HRV monitoring during NSSI. Ten participants wore a chest-based heart rate monitor…
