Transmission of intestinal helminths in Danish sow herds.

Faecal samples from sows and their litters, all untreated with anthelmintics, were examined in eight sow herds, ranging from very intensive to very traditional management. Four helminth genera were recorded, namely Oesophagostomum sp., Ascaris suum, Trichuris suis and Strongyloides ransomi. The herds with the most intensive management were only infected with A. suum, while the more traditionally managed herds were infected with three or four species. In one herd, the sows showed a small relative increase in the excretion of Oesophagostomum eggs during lactation, but in general there was no con

A case of duodenal strongyloidiasis presenting as a gastric outlet obstruction and endoscopically mimicking malignancy: A case report and mini review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Strongyloidiasis is a neglected soil-transmitted helminthiasis caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, affecting an estimated 300-600 million people worldwide. Due to its ability to cause autoinfection, the parasite may persist lifelong and lead to severe complications. While gastrointestinal symptoms are common, presentation as gastric outlet obstruction (GOO) is rare and can mimic malignancy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old male presented with several months of non-projectile vomiting, epigastric pain, indigestion, anorexia, and significant weight loss. Examination revealed dehy…

Schistosoma mansoni infection is associated with changes in gut microbiota in preschool age children in Albertine Region, Uganda.

Current understanding of gut microbiota alterations during helminthiasis is largely derived from experimental models, often focusing on a narrow range of metrics. This study investigates the structural and functional shifts in the gut microbiome associated with Schistosoma mansoni infection in a paediatric cohort. We conducted a cross-sectional study of preschool-aged children (12-47 months) comparing S. mansoni-infected individuals (56) to uninfected controls (57). Microbial DNA was extracted from stool samples and sequenced via the Illumina MiSeq v3 platform targeting the V4-16S rRNA region.…

Neglected zoonotic helminthiases in wild canids: new insights from South America.

The global threat of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) constitutes a public health issue in underdeveloped countries. Zoonotic helminthiases are the most common human NTD agents in developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and the Americas, causing a global burden of disease that exceeds that of more recognized infectious diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis. Wild canids are well-known mammals that act as natural reservoirs of zoonotic-relevant helminthiasis worldwide, thus playing a pivotal role in their epidemiology and transmission to humans. Here we evaluate the occurrence of…

Schistosome-Associated Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: A Review Emphasizing Pathogenesis.

Schistosomiasis, especially due to Schistosoma mansoni, is a well-recognized cause of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The high prevalence of this helminthiasis makes schistosome-related PAH (Sch-PAH) one of the most common causes of this disorder worldwide. The pathogenic mechanisms underlying Sch-PAH remain largely unknown. Available evidence suggests that schistosome eggs reach the lung via portocaval shunts formed as a consequence of portal hypertension due to hepatosplenic schistosomiasis. Once deposited into the lungs, the eggs elicit an immune response resulting in periovular gran…

Risk factors and prevalence of taeniasis among the Karen people of Tha Song Yang District, Tak Province, Thailand.

Taeniasis remains a prevalent public health problem in Thailand. National helminthiasis surveys report only the incidence of Taenia spp. eggs. The ability to differentiate Taenia species using morphological and molecular techniques is vital for epidemiological surveys. This study detected taeniasis carriers and other helminthic infections by Kato's thick smear technique and identified the Taenia species by multiplex PCR. The study subjects were the ethnic Karen people in Tha Song Yang District, Tak Province, Thailand, bordering Myanmar. In total, 983 faecal samples from villagers were examined…

Influence of Intestinal Helminth Burden on Clinical Manifestations, Therapeutic Response, and Leishmania braziliensis Load in Patients with New World Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Leishmania braziliensis is the most important cause of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in the Americas. A Th1-type immune response is required to control Leishmania infection, but an exaggerated inflammatory response leads to the development of ulcers seen in CL. Infection with intestinal helminths has the potential to inhibit the Th1 response in a manner that depends both on the species of helminth present as well as the burden of helminthiasis. We conducted a prospective cohort study of CL patients from an endemic area between January and December 2017 with either negative or high intestinal he…

Prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths and parasites in smallholder pigs reared in the central Free State Province.

Pigs are kept by farmers as a source of livelihood and food. Unfortunately, helminthiasis and other internal parasites are major setbacks to profitable pig production in Africa. There is a lack of information on the prevalence and intensity of gastrointestinal helminths and parasites plaguing resource-poor pig farmers in the Free State. Knowledge of these endemic parasites can be used as baseline data to help design future intervention plans. The aim of this study was to identify and quantify the types of gastrointestinal helminths and parasites prevalent in smallholder pigs reared in the cent…
