Stigma among key populations living with HIV in the Dominican Republic: experiences of people of Haitian descent, MSM, and female sex workers.

OBJECTIVE(S): To describe stigma among seropositive MSM, female sex workers (FSWs), and Haitian-descent individuals in the Dominican Republic, and to assess whether stigma is associated with HIV treatment outcomes. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey using Stigma Index 2.0. METHODS: People living with HIV (PLHIV) interviewed seropositive adult MSM, FSWs, Haitian-descent persons, and other PLHIV who did not identify with these communities about experiences of social exclusion, harassment, stigma in healthcare settings, and internalized stigma. Bivariate analyses were conducted to compare experienc

Examining the Attitudes and Behaviors of Health-care Providers Toward LGBT Patients in Lebanon.

The present cross-sectional descriptive study examined the attitudes and behaviors of health-care providers toward LGBT patients in Lebanon. Participants (N = 141) generally showed positive attitudes and behaviors toward LGBT patients. Mental health providers were significantly less likely to believe that homosexuality is a mental health disorder or that it is unnatural to identify with a gender identity other than one's biological sex when compared to non-mental health providers. Mental health providers were also more likely to be willing to address transgender people by their gender pronouns

Low seroprotection rate for meningococcus serogroup C in the adult HIV-1-infected population in Austria.

Current Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines recommend immunization of all human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients against meningitis serotype ACWY due to recent outbreaks of meningitis C in homosexual men in the USA. Implementation of this recommendation in other countries, such as Austria is hindered by the scarce knowledge on the vaccine coverage. In this study the serostatus for meningococcus serogroup C was analyzed in 390 HIV-infected individuals residing in Austria. These individuals were representative for the Austrian HIV cohort regarding sex, ag

Individual differences in the biological basis of androphilia in mice and men.

For nearly 60 years since the seminal paper from W.C Young and colleagues (Phoenix et al., 1959), the principles of sexual differentiation of the brain and behavior have maintained that female-typical sexual behaviors (e.g., lordosis) and sexual preferences (e.g., attraction to males) are the result of low androgen levels during development, whereas higher androgen levels promote male-typical sexual behaviors (e.g., mounting and thrusting) and preferences (e.g., attraction to females). However, recent reports suggest that the relationship between androgens and male-typical behaviors is not alw

Developing a Topology of Syphilis in the United States.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, reported rates of syphilis continue to increase. Co-occurring epidemics of syphilis among men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual populations create challenges for the prioritization of resources and the implementation of context-specific interventions. METHODS: State was the unit of analysis and was restricted to the 44 states with the most complete data of sex or sex partners for their reported adult syphilis cases. States were classified as high, medium, or low for reported congenital syphilis (CS) and MSM primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis rate

Examining the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identity Scale Among Members of an Alternative Sexuality Special Interest Group.

The present study contributes to a growing body of literature developing psychometrically and theoretically grounded measures of sexual orientation minority identity. We tested psychometric properties and construct validity of a 27-item measure, the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identity Scale (LGBIS). The sample consisted of 475 adult (178 male, 237 female, 16 male-to-female, 14 female-to-male, and 30 gender queer persons) members of a special interest group, the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom. Participants completed a health needs questionnaire. Prominent findings included (1) confirmato

Egalitarian: From Homophile to Helicophile in Post-World War II America.

The presidency of gender in the Anglo-American taxonomy of sexualities historically has been haunted by the irruption of "other" parameters of medicalization, censure, and caesura, not in the least absolute and relative measures of age. Where today's clinical psychologists feel the need to age-specify adult homosexuality in such Hirschfeldian terms as androphilia, however, the felt need is indeed still essentially clinical. That cosmopolitan expressions such as homosexual, LGB, or queer rarely require such specifications relies on a protracted and today, arguably, complete disarticulation of s

Inguinal and anorectal Lymphogranuloma Venereum: a case series from a sexually transmitted disease center in Rome, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is a sexually transmitted infection caused by L1, L2, L3 serovars of C. trachomatis (CT). Since 2003, LGV cases have been increasing in Europe. Aim of this report is to describe the LGV cases diagnosed in the largest STI center in Rome, Italy, from 2000 to 2016. This report shows that two clinically and epidemiologically different series of cases exist, and that, at present, the ano-rectal LGV represents the clinical variant occurring more frequently among men having sex with men (MSM), particularly those HIV-infected. CASE PRESENTATION: Ten cases of

Ecological Covariates of Subtle and Blatant Heterosexist Discrimination Among LGBQ College Students.

Sexual minority college students report experiencing interpersonal heterosexism, ranging from subtle insults to blatant physical violence. Such negative experiences can complicate developmental tasks common to adolescence and emerging adulthood. Studies examining the nature of heterosexism on college campuses have focused on blatant manifestations, yet subtle forms are more prevalent. Guided by ecological theory, we investigate the microsystem (e.g., perceived social support from friends, ambient heterosexism on campus), mesosystem (e.g., interaction between social support and ambient heterose

HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infection Incidence and Associated Risk Factors Among High-Risk MSM and Male-to-Female Transgender Women in Lima, Peru.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) and male-to-female transgender women (TW) are at increased risk of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We evaluated factors associated with incidence of HIV, HSV-2, and chlamydia and gonorrhea (anal and pharyngeal). METHODS: We used data from the Comunidades Positivas trial with MSM/TW who have sex with men in Lima, Peru. Participants were asked about sexual risk behaviors and underwent HIV/STI testing at baseline and 9- and 18-month follow-ups. We used discrete time proportional hazards regression to calculate hazard ratios for variable

Primary syphilis in HIV-negative patients is on the rise in Greece: epidemiological data for the period 2005-2012 from a tertiary referral centre in Athens, Greece.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological data on primary syphilis in Greece are limited. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the trends of the disease in Greece during the last few years and whether they are in accordance with the trends in other European countries and the United States of America. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis based on records of patients who visited the Sexually Transmitted Infections Unit of 'A. Sygros' Hospital in Athens, Greece, during the period 2005-2012. Our hospital is a tertiary referral centre for sexually transmitted infections cove

Syphilis in the United States: on the rise?

Syphilis rates and trends vary by population subgroup. Among men who have sex with men (MSM), rates of primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis are high throughout the USA (228.8 per 100,000 in 2013). P&S syphilis among women is much less common (0.9 per 100,000 in 2013) and occurs in isolated outbreaks plus in a few counties with persistent low levels of infection. Congenital syphilis trends closely follow P&S trends among women. These trends have implications for prevention. Routine screening among MSM can prevent tertiary syphilis, but despite interventions, rates of infection continue to rise

Cross-sectional evidence for a stress-negative affect pathway to substance use among sexual minority girls.

Sexual minority girls (SMGs) are four times more likely to engage in substance use than are heterosexual girls. A better understanding of the explanatory mechanisms of this disparity is needed to inform prevention and intervention programs. The goal of this study was to conduct a preliminary test of a "stress-negative affect" pathway by examining gay-related victimization and depression as mediators of substance use among SMGs. Adolescent girls (N = 156, 41% SMGs) were recruited from two urban adolescent medicine clinics to participate in an NIH-funded study of adolescent substance use. The av

"I thought this course was going to be streamlined!": the limits of normal and the possibilities of transgression.

This article offers an analysis of the parallels between neo-liberalism, epistemology, and pedagogy, specifically related to how neoliberal ideologies narrow the possibilities for considering transgressive sexualities. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) education encourages educators to consider queer lives and communities, and can do so in ways that leave intact or challenge dominant norms. Neoliberalism, an economic expression of liberalism, rests on ideologies that support privatization and a diminished notion of the public good. These ideologies can become intertwined w

Contesting neoliberalism through critical pedagogy, intersectional reflexivity, and personal narrative: queer tales of academia.

In this article, we use personal narrative to explore allies and alliance building between marginalized people working in and through higher education, with an eye toward interrogating the ways in which ideologies of neoliberalism work to maintain hierarchy through the legitimation of othering. Inspired by Conquergood (1985 ), who calls scholars to engage in intimate conversation rather than distanced observation, we offer our embodied experiences as a way to use the personal to reflect on the cultural, social, and political. Our narratives often recount being out of place, moments of incongru

Suicide and suicide risk in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender populations: review and recommendations.

Despite strong indications of elevated risk of suicidal behavior in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, limited attention has been given to research, interventions or suicide prevention programs targeting these populations. This article is a culmination of a three-year effort by an expert panel to address the need for better understanding of suicidal behavior and suicide risk in sexual minority populations, and stimulate the development of needed prevention strategies, interventions and policy changes. This article summarizes existing research findings, and makes recommendations fo

Are we forgetting the children? Testing the children of HIV-positive parents.

Undiagnosed HIV infection in children carries significant risks and national guidelines recommend that children of HIV-positive parents be tested. We reviewed the testing of HIV-positive patients' children in those new to our service from April 2008 to December 2009. Of the 86 women, 95% were asked about children. Of the 243 men, 53 were heterosexual or bisexual, and 190 identified themselves as men who have sex with men (MSM). Parental status was determined in 37 (70%) of heterosexual and bisexual men and in 14 (17%) of 84 MSM with a history of previous female partners. All untested children

Nursing care of families with parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

TOPIC: Families in which parents are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender are more diverse than they are similar. The numbers of parents and children in these families appear to be increasing with implications for nurses and other clinicians. PURPOSE: This paper reviews the current literature to determine the fundamental issues facing alternate families that include sexual minority parents and their children. It also explores the unique nursing needs of families with gay, lesbian, transgender, or bisexual parents in the field, which are critically examined for direct relevance to psychiatri

Evaluating large-scale HIV prevention interventions: study design for an integrated mathematical modelling approach.

BACKGROUND: There is an urgent need to evaluate HIV prevention interventions, thereby improving our understanding of what works, under what circumstances and what is cost effective. OBJECTIVES: To describe an integrated mathematical evaluation framework designed to assess the population-level impact of large-scale HIV interventions and applied in the context of Avahan, the Indian AIDS Initiative, in southern India. The Avahan Initiative is a large-scale HIV prevention intervention, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which targets high-risk groups in selected districts of the six s
